How to Apply for Temporary Employment
UNCW values the contributions of our temporary employees! Whether you are filling in for scheduled or unexpected staff shortages, providing essential support during times of increased work volume, or assisting with special projects, you are critical to the day-to-day operations of the university. As you utilize your skills and gain experience from departments across campus, remember many UNCW temporary employees have successfully obtained permanent positions with the university.
Below, we've compiled information that may be helpful to you during your temporary employment at UNCW.
Temporary Employees may ONLY work in an assignment for a period of 11 or less consecutive months from the first day worked. Therefore, when Temporary Employees reach 11 consecutive months of service, the employee is required to take a 31-day break.
NOTE: The ONLY exceptions to the 31-day break are Rehired Retirees hired as temporary employees. Rehired Retirees are NOT required to take a 31-day break in service.
All Temporary Employees receive a free temporary parking permit for one (1) month. This is given to them by the Hiring Official/Supervisor on their first day of employment. If employment is longer than one (1) month, the Temporary Employee must report to the UNCW Parking and Transportation Office located in Auxiliary Services in Warwick Center to purchase a temporary permit at a cost of $10 a week or purchase a permit at the staff rates.
UNCW Parking
All Temporary Employees receive a UNCW One Card, which is the official form of identification on campus. Your One Card allows the use of campus facilities and provides safe, easy access to university services and events. With your valid UNCW One Card, you can check out materials at UNCW Library, access meal plans or food dollars at campus dining locations, ride the Seahawk Shuttle and WAVE transit buses FREE and much more.
Seahawk Buck$ is the debit account feature of the UNCW One Card. With prepaid funds, you can make purchases at all food service locations, UNCW Bookstore, vending machines, student copiers, health center, pharmacy, UNCW Seahawk Mail, iPrint locations and iPrint Business Center and more.
Temporary Employees will need to obtain a UNCW One Card Identification (I.D.) Card. Click this link to go to the UNCW One Card website where you can find intructions on how to get a One Card. Scroll down to 'How to get your One Card' and click 'Faculty/Staff/Contractors' for detailed instructions.
Once all UNCW assignments have ended, One Card Access is automatically removed leaving the employee without One Card features.
UNCW One Card
Temporary Employees ARE SUBJECT to Social Security Taxation. Therefore, 7.65% of your taxable wages will be payroll deducted for Social Security.
Temporary Employees ARE NOT ELIGIBLE for State Benefits or participation in optional employee benefits paid through payroll deduction.
Temporary Employees paid on an hourly rate must enter hours worked on a monthly basis, from the first day of the month through the last day of the month, utilizing the Web Time Entry Instructions. Monthly timesheets MUST be submitted to your supervisor for approval via Web Time Entry no later than 7am on the 3 rd working day of the following month.
Temporary Employees paid a flat rate are not required to submit a timesheet.
Web Time Entry Instructions
Temporary Employee work schedules follow the holiday/closing schedule for the university. Temporary employees are not paid for university holidays or closings.
During adverse weather conditions, Temporary Employees are advised to contact their supervisor to discuss whether reporting to work is required based on weather conditions. Temporary Employees are not paid for hours not worked during periods of adverse weather.
All Temporary SHRA Employees are paid on the 15th of each month for hours worked the prior month. If the 15th occurs on a weekend or holiday, these employees are paid on the last working day prior to the 15th.
Temporary EHRA Employees paid a flat rate are paid on the last working day of the month.
All UNCW employees are paid via Direct Deposit. Pay stubs are emailed to employees the working day prior to pay day and can also be accessed by logging into SeaNet and clicking on Employee Information.

Please keep the following in mind when hiring temporary employees:
The law states that if an employer knows or has reason to believe that—at the outset of a temporary employee’s first assignment with the university—a temporary employee will work an average of 30 or more hours per week for three or more consecutive months, they MUST be offered the option to immediately enroll in the HDHP (High Deductible) Plan.
If the assignment does not meet that criteria, the temporary employee will be subject to a “look-back” period of 12 months to determine whether the employee met the service threshold for eligibility. If they met the threshold, then the employee must be offered coverage for the following year.
