Accountancy & Business Law

The Department of Accountancy and Business Law encourages all students to complete a professional internship to gain practical experience and apply classroom learning in real world situations. 

Internships provide important advantages, including:

  • A sneak peek into the daily activities and work environment in various disciplines of the field
  • A pathway to a full time job—most employers hire interns with the intention of offering permanent employment after upon completion of the 150 credit hour education requirement for CPA licensure
  • The opportunity to earn up to six credit hours of academic course credit toward a degree
  • Substantial compensation during the internship

We place a high priority on preparing students for internships and providing networking opportunities to meet potential employers.  These include a summer business trip to visit selected firms in Charlotte, four nights of Meet the Firms events on campus in the fall, and a Business Week Career Fair and dinner in the Spring.

Students also receive coaching and preparation for both face to face and online interviews led by experienced professionals, assistance preparing a resume tailored to industry expectations, and a free headshot.  Most CSB accounting students complete internships during the spring semester, although opportunities also exist in summer and fall.  The process of meeting firms and preparing begins as early as the sophomore or junior year, and students are highly successful securing opportunities with all of the Big 4 accounting firms, other leading firms throughout the region and industrial concerns.

VITA

For the past twenty years, the Cameron School of Business has participated in a free tax assistance program.  The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA), which is sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), provides low and moderate-income individuals and families with free income tax preparation assistance.

Our students can volunteer for this program if they have taken an introductory Income Tax course, completed additional IRS training and passed IRS certification exams. Students then assist taxpayers in filing their returns, taking the theory they learned in class and applying it to real-life clients and situations.

 

MSA Association

The MSA Association is a student organization that encourages networking among MSA students.  The Association plans social events for its members to build camaraderie in the cohort, completes one or two service projects each year to benefit the community, participates in Business Week sessions to promote the accounting career, and works to foster communication between students, faculty and staff.  The MSA Association also plans the June Recognition Ceremony, selecting a speaker for the event, and identifying both an outstanding graduate and outstanding MSA faculty member for the year.  The annual slideshow presented at the Recognition Ceremony provides visual highlights of MSA activities in and outside the classroom.  Its holiday party and post-recognition social both provide opportunities to celebrate and reminisce on the hard work completed together.  The MSAA President also serves on the Cameron School of Business Advisory committee.
