The Office of Sustainability is proud to recognize students, faculty, and staff that exemplify sustainability through their work and actions. Nominations are open each Spring, and we are looking for nominees that have positively impacted the university through their commitment to sustainability.
In 2014, the UNCW Sustainability Committee presented the Charlie Maimone Sustainability Award to Vice-Chancellor Maimone to recognize his outstanding leadership in sustainability. The award is given every year to a UNCW employee that exemplifies the principles and intersectionality of environmental stewardship, social justice, and economic vitality. The Sustainability Advisory Board will review applications and a winner will be announced at the Office of Sustainability's End of Year Celebration.
Who can nominate? All faculty, staff, students, and alumni are encouraged to nominate any faculty or staff member they feel meet the requirements of the award. Nominations must be submitted in letter format and include why you feel this person deserves the award. Make sure to include their full name and department as well as any projects or advocacy they are involved in.
Nomination Deadline: March 31, 2025

"When I think of sustainability, in its varied forms, at UNCW and in the Cape Fear region, I think of Roger Shew. He is an ambassador of sustainability in pretty much everything he does. Roger is such a kind, curious, and giving person, and we couldn't have a better advocate for sustainability by our side." - Nominated by Andrea Hawkes

The Carolyn Elizabeth (Lizzy) Duffy Student Sustainability Award was created in March 2015 to honor Lizzy Duffy’s passion, diligence, and drive in creating The Green Initiative Fund which brings support, resources, and visibility to sustainability at UNCW. The award is presented to one student who has been at UNCW at least one semester during the academic year, and that recipient must be in good standing with the university with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Nominees are encouraged and accepted from any discipline or field of study.
The award recognizes the service and commitment of a student who exemplifies passion, stewardship, and dedication for sustainability not only at UNCW but our surrounding community and the world we live in. The student must distinguish themselves by demonstrating their commitment to the intersectionality of the three pillars of sustainability: economic vitality, social equity, and environmental stewardship.
Awarded through the prestigious Cornerstone Awards, nominations open each spring.
