Thank you for looking into our department. We want you to have a successful UNCW experience and it is our goal to offer the best safety-related services and safety education we can while you’re here. We are operational 24/7/365 and serve as the primary law enforcement and security function for the university community. Our officers complete the same basic law enforcement training that city police officers and county deputies do, and we then enhance that knowledge and experience with continuing education, continuing to enhance officers’ ability to serve the UNCW community.
In addition to emergency response and criminal investigative services, we provide programs and services such as Safety Escorts, Operation ID (property engraving), Drug & Alcohol Awareness Education, RAD (self-defense classes), a Medicine drop-box, Active Attacker Response Training, and others. You might see us out at crosswalks reminding students to look up from their phones before crossing, or hosting Coffee with a Cop somewhere on campus. When you see us out and about, please take the opportunity to say hello, get to know our officers or just share your concerns. There is a lot going on in the world, not just with safety. Maybe we can help you ourselves or introduce you to a partner more suited to help you with a problem. You won’t know until you ask!
While it is our department’s mission to enhance the safety and security of the UNCW community, we cannot do it alone. Campus safety is a shared responsibility. While we patrol our campus 24/7, we also work to provide you with the tools and information to empower you to take your safety into your own hands. One of those tools is our UNCW Alert Campus Safety App. This is for students and employees only, and provides unique safety and well-being tools to more quickly connect you with assistance from the police department and other campus resources. Think of it as a mobile panic button, wherever you go, on or off campus.
Again, welcome to your UNCW experience, and if we might be able to help, please let us know.
In the meantime, take a look at general safety tips for various situations here.
