Our department exists for the protection of the UNCW community. We understand our students are young adults, many being on their own for the first time, and they will explore new experiences. We are part of the university team to help educate our students, to help them make good decisions to avoid bad things from happening whether from their own behavior or the behavior of others. And if we can't prevent it, we want to be there to help them through it.
Success for us is not a number of arrests or citations, but the positive impact we can have on people’s lives, and how many students get through their UNCW career without needing us because something bad happened.
Please get to know us! We offer ride-alongs, internship opportunities, active attacker response training, self-defense training, and more. We have a coffee with a cop program monthly at UNCW Library - it's an opportunity for anyone who has a question to chat with us directly, share concerns and get questions answered.
Or you can call anytime to ask about our practices and our approach to policing. 910-962-2222.
We are operational 24/7/365 and serve as the primary law enforcement and security function for the university community. Our officers complete the same basic law enforcement training that city police officers and county deputies do, and we then enhance that knowledge and experience with continuing education maintaining the officers’ ability to serve the UNCW community.
While it is our department’s mission to enhance the safety and security of the UNCW community, we cannot do it alone. Campus safety is a shared responsibility. While we patrol our campus 24/7, we also work to provide you with the tools and information to empower you to take your safety into your own hands. One of those tools is our UNCW Alert Safety App. This is for students and employees only and provides unique safety and well-being tools to more quickly connect you with assistance from the police department and other campus resources. Think of it as a mobile panic button, wherever you go, on or off campus.
Finally, UNCW Police and security guards offer safety escorts during hours of darkness. A police officer or security guard will provide walking or driving escort (subject to availability) across campus. Don’t walk alone if you don’t feel safe!
We hope you have a UNC-Wonderful college experience!
