Police Public Records
Requests for police public records* must be made in writing by submitting a completed Public Police Record Request form or comparable written request. Generally, copies of public records will be provided at no cost. N.C.G.S. 132-6.2(b) allows for charges to fill extraordinary requests. The requests will be processed as promptly as possible.
*For purposes of UNCW Police Department policy, the term public records includes those items defined as public records in N.C.G.S. 132-1, as amended. Likewise, the term police record is defined as criminal investigations; intelligence information records as defined in N.C.G.S. 132-1.4, as amended. Because of state and federal regulations governing the dissemination of police records, criminal history information and education records, several types of inquiries are considered protected from disclosure and may require a waiver to release. A record of who receives the information and why it is needed will be maintained. Some examples of valid purposes are:
- In-progress criminal investigation
- Preparation for court proceedings
- Preparation for seeking indictments or search warrants
- Criminal justice pre-employment check
For university related records requests, please direct your request to Steven Miller (millersw@uncw.edu) and Heather Richards (richardsh@uncw.edu) in the Office of General Counsel.
