Anay Soto-Gomez '24
Anay Soto-Gomez '24 spoke only Spanish for the first five years of her life. She was frightened and overwhelmed when she started elementary school, where English was the norm. Her journey to becoming a teacher was driven by the desire to ease the burden of children who struggle to find a sense of belonging. Soto-Gomez hopes to inspire students to see themselves in her story. Read more here.
Angel Hernandez '21, '27 Ph.D.
Angel Hernandez '21, '27 Ph.D. began his Seahawk journey after attending Isaac Bear Early College High School, a partnership between New Hanover County Schools and UNCW that allows students to earn a two-year undergraduate degree. Hernandez now continues to soar in the university's clinical psychology doctoral program. Read more here.
2024 Alumni Association Distinguished Awards
The University of North Carolina Wilmington has announced the recipients of the 2024 UNCW Alumni Association Distinguished Awards. The distinguished awards are presented to individuals in recognition of their extraordinary achievement, outstanding character and exemplary service to the university and community. Sergio Madera-Garcia '21, Distinguished Young Alumnus of the Year, is the Leadership Development Program director in N.C. State's Student Leadership and Engagement Office. Read more here.
Mayra Robles '18, '23M
Mayra Robles' connection with UNCW has come full circle. Her first interaction with the university began as a high school student. In December, Robles became a double alumna of the university, completing the Master of Public Administration program. Read the full article here.
UNCW Seahawks Make the Wilmington 100 List
Several UNCW Seahawks have made the Wilmington 100 list, an annual Greater Wilmington Business Journal initiative "to recognize the top 100 Power Players, Influencers, Innovators, Connectors and Rising Stars impacting Southeastern North Carolina's business landscape." Chancellor Aswani K. Volety and Eldemira Segovia, UNCW Centro Hispano director and New Hanover Community Endowment vice chair, are included in the Power Player category, which WilmingtonBiz describes as "the businesspeople and officials having the greatest impact on the region's business and economic landscape." Chris Montero, CEO and sales director, Perfect Touch Rental, and former Centro Hispano program director is included among the Connectors category. Read the full article here.
