Three local families have established scholarships at UNC Wilmington to increase educational opportunities for incoming students. Angel and Abigail Garcia created the Garcia Family Endowed Scholarship. Gustavo Rodea and Maria Guadalupe Durán ’10, ’13M started the Rodea Family Endowed Scholarship and Muebleria El Nido Scholarship. Luis and Yeraldi Munguia established the Market Street Used Tires and Auto Corporation Diversity Scholarship.
For the Garcias, the Garcia Family Endowed Scholarship was a way to give back to their community. It is the first endowed scholarship established by a local family giving special consideration to students active in Centro Hispano. Angel, the Assistant Director of Centro Hispano & Program Director of MI CASA at UNCW, and Abigail have built their careers in higher education and hope the scholarship will impact the Latin American and immigrant communities by relieving students of financial burden. An additional aim of the scholarship is to provide students with the ability to imagine an improved way of living.
Gustavo Rodea, owner of Rodea’s Enterprise, and Maria Guadalupe Durán crafted the Rodea Family Endowed Scholarship and the Muebleria El Nido Scholarship to leave a legacy to their children, Anthony and Leonardo Rodea. Teaching their children by example and helping others, Gustavo and Maria hope these scholarships do the same. The scholarships are another example of how the family tries to help Latino immigrants of single mothers, divorced parents and orphaned children reach their educational dreams and become stronger citizens by contributing to society. The Rodea Family Endowed Scholarship is the first endowed scholarship established by a Latino-owned business giving special consideration to students active in Centro Hispano.
The Munguias, owners of Market Street Used Tires and Auto, established their scholarship in honor of Yeraldi’s mother, Eunice Gutierrez. She served as a role model and pillar of excellence for her daughter. Luis and Yeraldi aim to further their passion for supporting students who are children of immigrants to meet their educational goals and become contributing members of society through this scholarship. This is the first annual scholarship established by a Latino-owned business giving special consideration to students active in Centro Hispano.
