Keynote

Gary Kessler

Gary C. Kessler, Ph.D., CISSP, retired as a professor of Cybersecurity at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Daytona Beach, FL) in 2020. Gary is the co-author of Maritime Cybersecurity: A Guide for Leaders and Mangers, 2/e (2022), a Principal Consultant at Fathom5, a Non-Resident Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council's Cyber Statecraft Initiative, Chief of the USCG Auxiliary Cyber Augmentation Branch, and a member of the Advisory Board of Cydome.

Prior to going to Embry-Riddle in 2012, Gary was the program director of the M.S. in Information Assurance Program at Norwich University (Northfield, VT) and, before that, the developer and coordinator of an undergraduate Digital Forensics program at Champlain College (Burlington, VT). Gary has a B.A. in Mathematics, M.S. in Computer Science, and Ph.D. in Computing Technology in Education. His research interests are primarily related to maritime cybersecurity, with a particular interest in the Automatic Identification System (AIS), and digital forensics, cryptography, and cybersecurity management and policy. Gary is also a certified PADI Master SCUBA Diver Trainer, holds a coxswain qualification and is the navigation systems staff officer for his USCG Auxiliary flotilla, and has a 50GT master captain's license. He drives a weekly lighthouse tour in Ponce de Leon Inlet for the Marine Discovery Center every Friday evening!

Jon Brickey

Dr. Jon Brickey is Senior Vice President, Cybersecurity Evangelist, for Mastercard Operations & Technology (O&T). In this role, he leads the development of cybersecurity strategy, research, outreach, education/training/awareness, commercialization and technology scouting. Jon supports Corporate Security’s mission of delivering safety and security at the speed of business. He also serves the greater cybersecurity community in several ways, with roles as the Industry Co-Chair for the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE), Board Member for the Internet Security Alliance (ISA), and Fellow with the Institute for Critical Infrastructure Technology (ICIT).

Before joining Mastercard, Dr. Brickey served in the Army on active duty for over 26 years and retired as a Colonel, holding a variety of leadership and technical roles in information systems management and cyberspace operations. In his last position, he served as the Army Cyber Institute Partner Relations Director for the National Capital Region. Previously, Jon held leadership positions in Cyber-related programs at the National Security Agency, U.S. Cyber Command, Army Cyber Command, U.S. Northern Command, and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Dr. Brickey earned his bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the United States Military Academy at West Point, a master’s degree in Science in Information Technology Management from the Naval Postgraduate School, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science and Information Systems from the University of Colorado Denver.

Terri Everett

Terri Everett is a former Senior Executive with thirty-six years of federal service, where she held senior staff and executive leadership positions in three agencies. Her leadership experience spans several disciplines, including Human Resources, Program and Project Management, Procurement and Acquisition, Government Contracting, and Logistics. A native North Carolinian, Terri retired “back home” to North Carolina from Northern Virginia. She is passionate about giving back and serves on several Boards in Wilmington.

Terri holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from the University of Maryland; a Master’s in Management from Central Michigan University; and a Master’s in National Security Strategy from the National Defense University. She held the highest Department of Defense certification levels in both Contracting and Program Management and was certified by a Defense agency as a Logistician. Terri also taught a graduate level course in Leadership as an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland.

Her awards include the National Intelligence Exceptional Service Award; National Intelligence Award for Collaboration Leadership; National Intelligence Superior Service Medal; Meritorious Civilian Service Award; and Letters of Commendation from senior U.S. and foreign officials.

Seth Barun
Lt. Col. Seth Barun

Lt. Col. Barun serves as the Chief of Cyber Operations for the NCNG, leading soldiers and airmen who help state agencies, local governments and critical-infrastructure operators protect against and respond to cyberattacks. In 2021 alone his team responded to 30 incidents, and provided over 50 SLTT network security and vulnerability assessments.  The National Guard is a major component of North Carolina’s Joint Cybersecurity Task Force, an interagency group that earlier this year received broader responsibilities under an executive order from Gov. Roy Cooper. LTC Barun has commanded units at the company and battalion level, and currently is the primary advisor to the State Adjutant General on cyber prevention and response. When he is not combatting cyber criminals, he enjoys spending time with his family, golfing and doing CrossFit.

Vitaly Chernyshev
Vitaly Chernyshev

In his current role as a Lead Consultant, Vitaly serves as a subject-matter expert within the Financial, Executive and Professional (FINEX) practice group at Willis Towers Watson. His primary role is to support the Southeast region and the Mergers & Acquisitions practice with market knowledge, legal trends, analytical tools, and the placement of Cyber, Technology, Media, and Errors & Omissions insurance. Prior to joining WTW, Vitaly served as a specialized broker at other nationally recognized insurance firms. He leverages his diverse background to assist clients in crafting coverage, terms, conditions, or thinking outside of traditional insurance. Vitaly’s clients encompass a wide variety of industry verticals including healthcare, manufacturing, technology companies, sports, and private equity. This has allowed him to gain a better understanding of how to approach different scenarios with comfort and be able to provide tailored solutions for every circumstance.

John Chickering
John Chickering

John Chickering advises boards and senior executives on strategy, technology, and operations. He began his career as a USCG-licensed engineering officer operating engine rooms in tankers. John was a pioneer in applying digital technology to solve marine / naval engineering challenges, presenting two peer-review papers before the American Society of Naval Engineers. While serving as a chief information officer in the private equity portfolio at Fidelity Investments, John was a principal thought leader in forming Fidelity’s digital records archive strategy. He later led Fidelity’s external defense cybersecurity program. John’s board experience includes the Smithsonian Libraries and Archives, three colleges, and more. He is a Fellow of the Association for Intelligent Information Management and is an occasional speaker at industry conferences and seminars hosted in academia. He holds a BS in Marine Engineering from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and an MBA from the University of Maryland. John volunteers with several community service organizations and has led 15+ storm restoration work teams on the ground in six states.

Jeff Crume
Jeff Crume

Jeff Crume is a Distinguished Engineer, Master Inventor and CTO for IBM Security Americas with 39 years’ experience in the IT industry. He has a PhD in Cybersecurity and serves as an Adjunct Professor at NC State University. Jeff is the author of a book entitled "Inside Internet Security: What Hackers Don't Want You To Know” as well as a contributing author to the "Information Security Management Handbook.” He is a member of the inaugural class of the NC State University Computer Science Alumni Hall of Fame where he has served on the school’s Strategic Advisory Board. He also serves on the editorial board for the “Information and Computer Security” research journal and is a member of the IBM Academy of Technology. He holds CISSP and ISSAP professional IT Security certifications as well as Distinguished Chief IT Architect credentials from The Open Group. Jeff lived in Beijing on assignment in 2006 and has worked with clients in 50 countries.

Rob Duggan
Rob Duggan

Rob leads Technology Risk Advisory Services for Earney & Company. He is a graduate of NC State and has over 20 years of audit and IT security experience including 10 years of international audit in over 25 countries for Fortune 1000 manufacturing and distribution companies. Rob has 4 years of experience leading IT Audit and Risk Advisory practice development for Top 10 Firms, and 7 years serving national healthcare organizations as Internal Audit and Compliance Officer. Rob enjoys performing Cybersecurity Assessments and business process improvement the most and personally works these projects and more complex process assurance work from the ground up. Rob is a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Internal Auditor, Certified Information Systems Auditor, Certified Information Systems Security Professional, and holds a Certificate in Healthcare Compliance. Rob is a frequent speaker on cybersecurity nationally & within the Wilmington professional community, and serves on the Board of Advisors for UNCW’s Center for Cyber Defense Education, as well as the Board of Directors for Plantation Village, a top Wilmington Assisted Living Community. Rob is also a member of the FBI’s InfraGard, an association of professionals dedicated to sharing intelligence to prevent hostile acts against the United States. Rob grew up in New Bern, NC, and enjoys free days boating and on the beach with his Red Boston Terrier Tonto, who has been known to make appearances on occasional video conference calls. Rob also enjoys spending time on a family farm in Georgia and enjoys the visual and performing arts.

Jeff Greer
Jeff Greer

Jeff Greer is currently a lecturer in cybersecurity at the University, of North Carolina Wilmington. When not teaching, Jeff is performing R&D. His area of focus is the development of new tools and methods for educating cybersecurity students and solutions for elevating enterprise cybersecurity. Previously Jeff was Vice President of Operations for a NASDAQ tech company until his retirement in 2018. For fifteen years he was an integral part of an executive team that built a successful mobile broadband business offering internet services to ships at sea around the world. Jeff holds a Master of Science degree in Cybersecurity Technology.

Thomas Hill
Thomas Hill

Thomas serves as nCino’s Chief Information Security Officer, leading cybersecurity operations, cloud services and hosting, and technology compliance. He has more than 25 years of technology and industry experience, with cybersecurity expertise specializing in Fintech, Digital Banking, and Cloud Security. He holds a Bachelors in the Management of Information Systems, an MBA with a concentration in cybersecurity, and holds many industry certifications in security and privacy (i.e., CISSP, CISM, and CIPT).

Chuck Kesler
Chuck Kesler

Chuck Kesler brings over 30 years of information security and IT leadership experience to his role as the Chief Information Security Officer at Pendo, a SaaS company whose mission is to help product-led organizations deliver digital experiences that users love. Prior to joining Pendo, he served as CISO for Duke University Health System and managed Symantec’s Security Advisory Services consulting practice in the US. Chuck is also a past Vice President and Education Director for the Raleigh ISSA Chapter. Chuck received an MBA and B.S. in Physics from NC State University, and holds multiple security certifications, including the CISSP, CISM, and CCSK. He is also a graduate of Carnegie Mellon's CISO Certificate Program.

Manny Landron
Manny Landron

Manny Landron is a pragmatic information security leader and advisor with extensive experience building, securing, and monitoring high-value and well-regulated applications and platforms, on-premises and in-cloud. He most recently served as the interim head of information security at Caesars Sportsbook where he helped Caesars Entertainment with post acquisition information security activities associated with the Caesar’s acquisition of William Hill. Previously, Manny implemented the greenfield information security programs for IAT Insurance Group, a specialty insurance company with about 2B in underwritten premium, and for Citrix ShareFile, a Gartner Magic Quadrant leading content collaboration solution hosted with AWS and Azure. He also performed the requirements analysis and designed the HIPAA audited ShareFile Cloud for Healthcare to satisfy healthcare customer HIPAA security and privacy requirements and the FINRA compliant ShareFile Cloud for Financial Services to satisfy broker-dealer customers subject to SEC Rule 17a-4 requirements. Manny is a graduate of Virginia Tech and holds several security designations including the AWS Certified Security Specialty.

Boris Montatsky
CDR Boris Montatsky

Commander Boris Montatsky currently serves at U.S. Coast Guard Cyber Command as the Cyber Effects and Protection Division Chief. In this role, he leads a diverse staff of three Cyber Protection Teams (CPTs), a Cyber Mission Team (CMT), and a Maritime Cyber Readiness Branch. These elements inform and assess cyber risk across the Maritime Transportation System (MTS) as well as conduct cyberspace operations that prevent and defend against cyber attacks targeting U.S. national interests.His previous assignments include Assistant Response Department Head and Search and Rescue (SAR) controller at Sector Lake Michigan, in Milwaukee, WI, as well as Cybersecurity Certification & Accreditation Team Lead at the Coast Guard’s Telecommunications Information Systems Command (TISCOM). Commander Montatsky also served as Chief, Centralized Service Desk (CSD), St. Louis, MO. His staff assignments include Chief, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) Information Assurance Division for the Assistant Commandant for Intelligence (CG-2), and Chief of the Cyberspace Operations Policy Division under the Assistant Commandant for Capability (CG-7) at Coast Guard Headquarters. Commander Montatsky earned his commission from the U.S. Coast Guard Officer Candidate School, New London, CT. He is a graduate of Northern Illinois University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Operations Management and Information Systems. His postgraduate education includes a Master of Science in Information Technology Management from DePaul University, Chicago, IL, and a Master of Science in Government Information Leadership from the National Defense University, Washington D.C. He also holds numerous professional certifications. Commander Montatsky is a permanent Boat Forces Pin (Pewter) holder and has been awarded several personal and service awards, including the Meritorious Service Medal (3), the Coast Guard Commendation Medal, and the Coast Guard Achievement Medal. He is also a 2020 Old Crows Association Military Service Award Winner. Commander Montatsky was born in Minsk, Belarus and immigrated to the United States in 1989 where his family settled in Chicago, IL. He has been married to his wife Karina for 20 years, and they have two sons – Sean (18) and Ethan (14).

Genesis Block assists with parallel development using blockchain technology to create digital identities for diverse owned businesses.

Chris Nichols
Chris Nichols

Chris graduated from UNCW with a BS in Information Technology and Minor in Cybersecurity and is currently pursuing a Masters in Networking Technology with a Security concentration through ECU. He has been with NC Ports since December 2021 as a Security Analyst. Previously, he participated in the UNCW Cybersecurity Apprenticeship Program, working with the security team to find, investigate, and resolve potential breaches of security.

Mike Parsons
Mike Parsons

Parsons holds the CISSP, PCIP, IAM, IEM and is HIPAA certified. He is a 6- year veteran of USMC and resides in eastern North Carolina. Parsons founded BlueTeamAssess LLC in 2015 and is its Senior Cybersecurity Architect and Mentor. His passion is working with small businesses and his vision is to provide affordable and actionable cybersecurity solutions that serve both small and large businesses. He believes information security has a tactical and strategic value proposition for any organization and must not be viewed as a discretionary expense. His areas of expertise are in information technology, cybersecurity, vulnerability and risk management, networking and small business counseling and planning. Parsons earned his BA from ECU, his MBA from the University of Maryland and a graduate certificate in Information Security and Privacy from UNC at Charlotte. He is a Senior member of the ISSA and a Platinum member of ISACA. Parsons installed the first firewall at Wachovia and served as the primary security engineer and architect for Wachovia's first Internet banking and brokerage products. He has spoken before several local organizations on the subject of risk and vulnerability management and topics of current concern in information security. He has led many risk assessment efforts and has developed security standards for technical devices and operating environments in major organizations including government, retail and finance. His passion is helping SMBs address the threats encountered from the Internet and understand the risks they face in their daily operation.

Laura Rodgers
Laura Rodgers

Laura Rodgers is the Director of Cybersecurity Practice in the Department of Computer Science at North Carolina State University. She is the technical liaison between industry, government agencies, the Secure Computing Institute, and the NC Partnership for Cybersecurity Excellence. She works with these organizations to gain their perspectives and share cybersecurity challenges and solutions. Prior to joining the NCSU Department of Computer Science, Ms. Rodgers was the Sr. Cyber Compliance Manager at the North Carolina Military Business Center where she helped small defense contractors with compliance to Department of Defense cybersecurity regulations. She developed several cybersecurity tools and resources that can be found at www.cyberNC.us. Ms. Rodgers developed a variety of training programs that she presented at Duke University, Wake Tech Community College, UNC Wilmington, the Defense Alliance of North Carolina, and the Small Business Center Network. Prior to joining the NCMBC, Ms. Rodgers was a Client Relations Manager at North Carolina State University’s Industry Expansion Solutions organization. Ms. Rodgers began her career at Lockheed-Martin working on the MX and Titan Missile programs and she worked on military training programs at General Dynamics Information Technology. Ms. Rodgers attended Oklahoma State University and earned a B.S in Accounting and an MBA. She holds a Data Privacy and Protection Specialist certification and is working toward a CMMC Certified Professional certification.

Aaron is a Cyber Security Evangelist, Security Architect & Member of the Office of the CTO at Check Point Software Technologies. A subject matter expert in Cloud, Internet of Things, and Application security; Aaron has focused his career on securing organizations & their resources beyond the perimeter of the traditional network firewall. An avid international traveler, Aaron welcomed the opportunity to spend three months in Tel Aviv’, Israel training with Check Point’s research & development teams at the company’s global headquarters.

Brian Willis
Brian Willis

Brian Willis is an information security consultant, auditor, and analyst with over 25 years’ experience in diverse technology roles.  From his beginnings as a systems analyst in small manufacturing environments Brian has at one time or another, and often at the same time, served as network engineer, client/server administrator, help desk technician, pen tester, and compliance manager.  Leveraging his managerial and administrative experience with his knowledge of regulatory compliance and security principals, Brian delivers practical guidance to his clients to ensure they achieve their goals and add value to their organizations.   Brian is the ISO 27001 and CSA STAR certification practice leader for LBMC Information Security. He has been a cybersecurity risk and compliance assessor for over 15 years, leading assessments in the food service, retail, healthcare, insurance, and payment system sectors, and has also served as PCI Internal Security Assessor for North America’s largest contract food service provider.
