Transition Programs

Welcome to the Seahawk Family! At UNCW, we are dedicated to helping you transition to UNCW as a transfer student. As a transfer student, we have so many resources and opportunities for you to connect with other transfer students and the larger UNCW community.

Transfer Programs and Events

The Office of Transition Programs provides various services to support transfer students during their transition to UNCW: 

Transfer Connect Mentor Program: The Transfer Connect Mentor Program helps new transfer students feel connected and supported as they transition to UNCW. Through a group mentoring experience, students join small cohorts of 8–12 led by an experienced mentor who provides guidance and campus insight.

Transfer Events: Events like the Transfer Social and Transfer Float help students connect and share experiences. Upcoming events can be found on . 

Transfer Meet-ups: Monthly events that allow transfer students to attend on-campus activities while meeting peers. Transfer meet-ups can be found on Wavelink.

Transfer Workshops: A workshop series designed to provide students with valuable campus resources and support for a successful transfer experience. The program consists of approximately three workshops per semester, each focused on different topics such as academic planning, campus services, and transfer readiness.

National Transfer Student Week: Hosted the third full week of October, NTSW celebrates the experiences of Transfer Students.

Transfer Scoop: A monthly newsletter that provides updates on events, resources, and happenings at UNCW, keeping transfer students informed and engaged.

Individual Appointments: Schedule a 30 min - 1 hour appointment with Ally Whitman, Coordinator of Transition Programs to discuss your transition to UNCW or to share ideas for transfer events and programs. To schedule an appointment, please contact Ally Whitman at whitmana@uncw.edu.

Transfer Connect Mentor Program

Find Your Community at UNCW 

Starting at UNCW as a transfer student can feel like a big transition, but you don’t have to navigate it alone. The Transfer Connect Mentorship Program is designed specifically to help you build connections, find your footing on campus, and feel supported from day one.

If you’re accepted into the program, you’ll be matched with an experienced transfer student mentor who understands what it’s like to make the transition. You’ll also be placed in a small group of new transfer students, giving you a built-in community right away.

Throughout the semester (August–November 2026), you’ll have opportunities to:

  • Attend the Transfer Connect Kickoff and Transfer Connect Mentee End of the Year Celebration
  • Connect with other transfer students
  • Get weekly check-ins from your mentor 
  • Two group events just for your small group
  • Receive guidance from someone who’s already been in your shoes
  • Get two individual 1:1s with your mentor through the semester 
  • Build friendships and a sense of belonging at UNCW

Incoming Transfer Students will receive an email with the Transfer Connect Mentorship application starting in June 2026.

To participate, you must complete the application, be accepted, and commit to the program’s requirements.

When does the Transfer Connect program begin?  
The application for Mentees will open in June. Mentors will begin contacting mentees in early August, with the official kickoff event taking place the last  week of August. 

What are the requirements of the Transfer Connect Mentor Program? 

  • Attendance at the two Transfer Connect events – (Transfer Connect Mentor Kickoff and Transfer Connect Mentee End of the Year Celebration)
  • Participation in at least  one individual meetings with your mentor during the semester  
  • Involvement in two mentorship group events to be scheduled by your mentor once group schedules are established 

Opportunities for you and your group to plan your own activities.

  • 2 Large Transfer Connect events
  • 2 Small group events
  • Invited to attend all regular Transfer events throughout the semester in addition to the Transfer Connect events. 
  • Transfer Connect GroupMe Chat  

Will the events/meet-ups be held on or off campus? 
All organized Transfer Connect events will be held on campus, but groups are encouraged to plan their own activities in addition to the required events. 

Does Transfer Connect allow for online participation?  
Transfer Connect Mentorship Program supports transfer students in building meaningful connections, learning about campus resources, and developing peer support during the transition to UNCW. To get the full benefit of the program, you will need to participate in person.

National Transfer Student Week

Join us for National Transfer Student Week (NTSW)
October 19-23, 2026

Hosted the third full week of October each year, NTSW creates visibility and recognition, helping students build community, develop pride in their educational journey, and connect with resources and opportunities.
