Walking, Boarding & Scooters

Students who commute to campus by walking, scooting, boarding, or skating should use caution when traveling to and from campus and crossing busy intersections.

Crosswalks are at the three major entrances to campus: South College Road and Randall Parkway, South College Road and Hurst Drive, and Racine Drive and Randall Parkway. Pedestrians should always use the crosswalks and should never assume a vehicle is going to stop on their behalf.

Operators of bicycles, scooters, skateboards, and/or other micro-mobility devices must yield to anyone traveling on foot and must DISMOUNT their device before entering/crossing a crosswalk to avoid an accident. 

Micro-mobility vehicles, including e-bikes, e-scooters, and e-skateboards, are permitted on the UNCW campus as they provide sustainable and convenient transportation options. The Micro-Mobility Policy is established to ensure they are used in a safe and responsible manner.

• Traffic and Safety Compliance: Riders must adhere to all traffic laws, utilize designated bike lanes where available, and yield to pedestrians, particularly in high-traffic areas. Riding under the influence of drugs or alcohol is strictly prohibited.
• Pedestrian Safety: Riders should limit their speed to a maximum of 10 mph on pedestrian pathways and exercise caution in areas with high pedestrian traffic.
• Safe Riding Practices: Tandem riding is not permitted, and using electronic communication devices while riding is discouraged. Helmets are highly recommended for safety.
• Designated Parking: Micro-mobility vehicles should be parked and secured at designated bike racks and must not obstruct walkways, building entrances, or ADA-accessible ramps.

Violations of this policy may result in fines, impoundment of vehicles, or disciplinary action. Repeat violations will be addressed in accordance with UNCW’s Code of Student Life and applicable Housing and Residence Life standards.

Community members are encouraged to report any safety hazards witnessed on campus related to micro-mobility vehicles to UNCW Police or Parking and Transportation Services.

2. Do not ride in the road or parking decks
3. Dismount at crosswalks
4. Do not assume a vehicle is going to stop for you
5. Use extra caution if you choose to use headphones while skating/blading
