UNCW Will Resume Normal Operations Saturday

UNCW Alert

Based on forecasts for warming temperatures over the weekend and improving road conditions in the Wilmington region, UNCW will resume normal operations on Saturday, Jan. 25. Until then, the university will extend Condition 2 through 11:59 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24. Friday evening classes and events are cancelled.

UNCW is working hard to normalize conditions, but when walking on campus, please exercise caution as there may be icy areas on walkways, steps, footbridges, etc. Drive carefully to and around campus. Avoid cell phone use; leave early to allow for additional travel time; reduce speed; increase following distance; and be patient. As conditions may vary across the region, please remember to make responsible decisions for your safety.

The university does not plan to send additional messages about this weather event unless conditions change significantly.

Arts and Athletics

Scheduled events on Saturday and Sunday at Kenan Auditorium, Trask Coliseum and other campus locations will proceed as planned unless otherwise announced on event websites and social media channels.

  • Men’s basketball vs. Hampton, 7 p.m. Saturday at Trask
  • Donna the Buffalo, 8 p.m., Saturday at Kenan
  • Chamber Music Wilmington presents Simone Dinnerstein, 4 p.m., Sunday at Beckwith Recital Hall

University Employees

UNCW will remain in Condition 2 (Suspended Operations) under the Adverse Weather Policy through 11:59 p.m., Friday, Jan. 24. During this time, the university will remain open on a limited basis but has suspended all but mandatory operations due to minimal staffing levels. Employees designated or temporarily assigned as mandatory must report to work or remain at work as directed; all other employees may not report to work or must leave the workplace when this status takes effect. Employees may also work remotely with supervisory approval. Employees must use leave for any work time missed in accordance with leave keeping policies.

Residential Students

Most campus services will return to normal this weekend as the weather improves but remember to double check location schedules online before heading out. Please keep an eye out for icy patches. Remember to be careful when traversing sidewalks and walking up or down steps or stairwells as they may be slippery in winter weather conditions. Be considerate and careful when driving on campus. UNCW Police have had to advise drivers to avoid reckless behavior.

Student Recreation Center and UNCW Library

The university will open the Student Recreation Center and the Randall Hall building at UNCW Library from 12-4 p.m. on Friday. On Saturday, the SRC is scheduled to open at 10 a.m. The UNCW Library is scheduled to open at 12 p.m. on Saturday. Operations in both locations may be reduced due to limited staffing. Please check both locations’ websites and social media sites for details.

Other Events and Services

Remember that winter weather conditions may continue to impact scheduled events, activities and services on campus and in the Wilmington area. Before heading out, please check relevant websites and/or social media feeds for the latest updates.
