EH&S offers fire extinguisher training for you and your department. Learn more about this training here.
In Case Of Fire
For small fires if you are trained:
- You may wish to fight it with a fire extinguisher
- Call 911
- When in doubt, just get out
During evacuation:
- Do not stop for personal belongings or records
- Leave immediately
- Close doors behind you
- Use the exit stairways, not elevators
- Do not walk through or stand in a smoke cloud
- Stay low to the floor when exiting if visibility is impaired due to smoke
- Notify either University Police or firefighters on the scene if you suspect someone may be trapped inside the building
P.A.S.S.
When using a fire extinguisher always remember the acronym "PASS."
- Pull (the pin)
- Aim (at the base of the fire)
- Squeeze (the trigger)
- Sweep - at the bottom of the fire

Building Evacuations
An emergency on campus may require a building evacuation. Examples of such emergencies include gas leaks and building fires. If a building evacuation is required, follow these steps:
- When instructed, either by fire alarm or other alert notification method, calmly evacuate the building
- Retreat to a safe place outside of the building. When possible, pre-determine a place where you and your co-workers/classmates will meet
- Remain in this location until everyone is accounted for. Notify emergency responders if you think someone may be trapped
- Do not re-enter the building until emergency personnel determine it is safe
- EH&S will be glad to assist in the development of evacuation plans or facilitate fire exit drills
