Middle Grades Education Programs

Early Childhood, Elementary, Middle, Literacy & Special Education

Our middle grades education programs are designed for individuals who would like to teach students in grades 6-9. You may choose from four concentrations: language arts, math, science or social studies.

Our programs are offered in a cohort model to provide a community of strong support for future teachers.

Other distinctive features include small class sizes, dedicated faculty and extensive field and classroom experiences, including a full-time internship.

We offer three programs: a bachelor's degree program (BA), a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT), and a residency licensure certificate program. An additional dual degree program, offered in partnership with the College of Science & Engineering, enables students to earn a Master of Science in Environmental Studies as well as a Master of Arts in Teaching Middle Grades.

Middle Grades Programs

Bachelor of Arts in Middle Grades Education This program provides a pathway for undergraduates who would like to teach middle school students. The program leads to NC teaching licensure in grades 6-9. View the Program Page
MAT in Middle Grades Education This program is designed for career-changers, residency teachers and recent college graduates who hold a bachelor’s degree and would like to teach middle-school aged students. You can earn a master’s degree and an M-Level NC teaching license. View the Program Page
Middle Grades, Residency Licensure WCE will soon offer a graduate certificate program for non-certified teachers hired to teach math, science, language arts or social studies in middle schools. The program is designed to lead to NC middle-level teaching licensure (grades 6-9).

Dual Degree Program

MAT students with a science concentration have the option of earning two master’s degrees. The dual degree program, offered in partnership with the College of Science & Engineering, enables students to earn a Master of Science in Environmental Sciences as well as a Master of Arts in Teaching in Middle Grades Education. Students can complete the dual degree program in just two years.
