Middle Grades Education Clinical Residency, Post-Baccalaureate Certificate

Teaching young people in middle grades is a challenging yet highly rewarding profession that allows you to specialize in a field and teach a subject you enjoy while guiding students as they mature through young adolescence. North Carolina needs more middle grades teachers, and in order to fill teaching vacancies, the state allows teachers to work in the school system with a bachelor’s degree as long as they obtain a NC teaching license within three years.

Our residency licensure pathway supports non-certified teachers who have been hired to teach mathematics, science, language arts or social studies in grades 6-9 in North Carolina public schools. Coursework is designed to lead to NC middle-level teaching certification.

This 18 credit-hour program can be completed in just over one year and is designed to accommodate working professionals while providing preparation for effective teaching and learning in the classroom. Dedicated faculty with extensive teaching experience teach all courses in this efficient and comprehensive program.

Candidates in the middle grades residency licensure program will develop knowledge and skills commensurate with that of a first year middle school teacher. You will gain knowledge of effective teaching methods and instructional strategies for meeting the needs of students in their early to late teen years. You will also learn how to establish a classroom environment sensitive to the needs of all students and ways to use technology to enhance the academic achievement of all learners.

Our middle grades residency courses are offered at the graduate level. This is not a degree program, but all courses can be transferred into our Master of Arts in Teaching in Middle Grades Education degree program.
