Health Equity Bonner Fellowship

Health Equity Bonner Fellows commit to:

  • Participate in the program for their four years at UNCW.
  • Attend a regularly scheduled workshop during the academic year.
  • Register for any required academic courses.
  • Trainings include cohort bonding, workshops with invited guest speakers, skills-based training, and meaningful reflections.
  • Engage directly with a community partner organization in New Hanover County (or a surrounding county) for 6-10 hours weekly.
  • Participate in HEBF orientation: one to two days filled with various activities to learn more about the program, what being a Fellow is all about, and bond with other fellows.
Fellows who fulfill these commitments receive:
  • Leadership development to aid skill-building in socially just, community-based work.
  • Mentorship within the Health Equity Bonner Fellowship through an academic adviser and a HEBF-affiliated peer adviser.
  • A lifelong community of Health Equity Bonner Fellows.
The Fellowship is structured to be:
  • Developmental - Students gain increasing levels of experience, responsibility, and leadership across their four years at UNCW.
  • Multifaceted - Students participate in a range of leadership and professional development workshops that integrate their engaged learning with academic pursuits, social justice work, and reflective practice.
  • Collaborative - Students work together as a cohort-based team at UNCW.
Trips and Experiences

The CHHS Health Equity Bonner Fellowship prides itself on providing its fellows with access to various incredible opportunities and experiences; some of which are entirely unique to the program. Attendance at all required events is at no cost to the fellows. Fellows are only expected to pay for food beyond the budgeted amount and activities on free days.

Orientation*

Each year an orientation should be convened before the school year begins for all first-year Health Equity Bonner Fellows to build community among the Health Equity Bonner Fellows, provide enrichment activities, and begin preparing them for their service and other responsibilities.

Fall/Spring Retreat*

The content and scheduling of orientation and retreats may vary each year.

Capstone Project & Presentation Learning

CHHS Health Equity Bonner Fellows will have the opportunity to work on projects that combine their academic studies, service experience, and personal passions into presentations and research that can be showcased at Research and Innovation Day each spring.
