The Student Behavioral Intervention Team (SBIT) is comprised of a select group of university administrators charged with the responsibility of identifying, investigating, assessing, and monitoring complex student cases where students are struggling to succeed and could use heightened guidance and interventions in order to remain enrolled. The Team identifies Student Affairs Departments that may provide students with resources and services as well as Academic Affairs supports and services necessary to enable a student to remain in good standing at UNCW. The SBIT is facilitated by the Student Affairs Assistant Dean of Students (Student Support)/Case Manager. The Assistant Dean of Students (Student Support)/Case Manager provides means for reporting of high-risk students by others in the UNCW community, and for tracking cases for follow-up support and monitoring. Cases discussed by the SBIT are confidential in nature. SBIT is not designed as a direct referral source for the community. Its cases are brought forward by myriad staff in Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and University Police who participate on the Team.
The SBIT convenes to discuss students referred to the team who are struggling to succeed at UNCW and in some cases are emerging in different places/services on campus. The SBIT will discuss complex cases involving students who need various resources (health, counseling, case management, housing, academic resources) in order to succeed.
The SBIT reviews cases the are reported to the Office of the Dean of Students by various members of the university community, including students who are disruptive or who require intervention in order to remain in good standing or who will likely have a greater likelihood of succeeding by accessing various university resources (e.g. counseling, academic support, health services). The SBIT also refers certain cases-when a student's behavior rises to the level of potentially threatening the University community or themselves-to the Student Threat Assessment Team.
