Data governance establishes the processes and responsibilities that ensure the quality and security of the data used across UNCW. Data governance defines who can take what action, upon what data, in what situations, using what methods.
UNCW Data Governance is managed by various campus constituents and overseen by Institutional Research & Planning & Information Technology Services.
The DGC oversees the data governance initiatives aligned with the core objectives as outlined in the program charter. The DGC is an inter-divisional group responsible for overseeing data governance strategy, policy, risk management, and data management, ensuring engagement across the institution, and promoting a culture that embraces the responsible use of data and resources to achieve institutional goals.
The work of the committee helps to ensure a cost-effective, transparent, and strategic approach to data-driven decision-making in support of the institution’s mission and priorities. As the committee co-chairs, the Associate Provost for Institutional Research and Planning and the Associate Vice Chancellor for Information Technology Services and Chief Information Officer (CIO) are primarily responsible for reaching consensus, reporting, and implementing committee recommendations.
The DGC’s authority is to make decisions on all aspects of data governance for the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW). DGC membership is determined by the Data Trustees and DGC committee chairs, and accountable to the Data Governance Executive Sponsors and Chancellor.
