The Office of University Relations is sending this message on behalf of Dr. Lucy Holman, Associate Provost for Teaching, Learning, and Library Services, and Dean of Randall Library.
Have you seen the construction progress on Randall Library?! From the outside, the expansion might look nearly complete, but inside the crews will continue working through the summer.
Next on the timeline is a renovation of the original library building, starting May 8, 2024. During the renovation, the building will be closed and some services will be modified.
Modified Library Services Starting May 8, 2024:
- Library building will be closed to all UNCW and community patrons.
- Alternative study and computing spaces for the summer will be made available on campus. More information on those locations will be available in March.
- Library collection (print and physical media) will be unavailable for physical browsing, but UNCW faculty, staff and students can check out items from the collection by placing requests in the online catalog. More information will be available in March.
- The Center for Southeast North Carolina Archives and History will be closed starting May 1. The staff will continue to assist remotely, but portions of the collection may be inaccessible.
- Course Reserve service will be limited to pre-arranged, specific situations. Contact rlcirculation@uncw.edu to discuss your Course Reserve needs for the summer.
- Digital Makerspace (including podcasting space and 3D printing service) will be closed.
- Library-related instruction can be made virtually or in your classroom for Summer 2024. Please contact your liaison librarian to schedule an instruction session, plan for in-library instruction for Fall 2024, or coordinate alternate locations if needed.
- Interlibrary Loan Services will remain available.
- Other partner services in the library:
- iPrint Business Center will temporarily relocate to the Printing Services Building, through mid-August.
- Technology Assistance Center (TAC) walk-up services will be made available at an alternate location. More information will be available in March.
- Tours of library services and resources will not be available during the renovation.
- View an expanded list of modified library services.
Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we prepare for these temporary summer modifications in library services through the final stages of construction and renovation. The transformation of Randall Library is an incredibly exciting university project – and we can’t wait to enjoy it with you once complete!

As part of the university’s ongoing master planning process, King Hall is scheduled for renovation, requiring the entire building to be vacated. The work will begin at the end of the spring 2023 semester, following commencement. The yearlong project will focus on HVAC systems and code requirements and include modifications to the first floor for the Department of Film Studies and reconfiguration of the second floor to accommodate Honors College and other academic units.
All film studies and pre-engineering faculty and staff offices currently located in King Hall will be relocated to the R-Lot Modular units on Chancellor's Walk for the duration of the renovation. Courses normally scheduled for King Hall will be relocated to appropriate spaces across campus. Morton Hall and the R-Lot Modulars are receiving upgrades to meet the needs of many of the displaced courses. The Office of the Registrar is aware of these changes. Additional messaging regarding the renovation will be shared with campus as necessary. Contact the Office of Facilities with questions or concerns.

Parking lot adjustments and temporary road closures to accommodate the expansion and renovation of Randall Library and crosswalk safety enhancements on Randall Drive are slated to begin this week. The Office of Facilities and the Office of Parking and Transportation are sharing advance information about these plans to help the campus community prepare for any inconveniences that may result from the university’s progress on these important efforts. Facilities and parking will share further adjustments as needed as the projects progress.
Parking Lot Adjustments: Beginning May 20, the faculty/staff parking lot at the end of Kenan Hall Drive, between Randall Library and King Hall, along with parking spaces on the northside of Kenan Hall Drive, will be closed to accommodate large trucks completing construction deliveries. The trucks will use the Randall Drive-College Road entrance to campus. Please be prepared for periodic traffic congestion in this area as well as along Wagoner Drive in front of Kenan Auditorium during the Randall Library project.
The closure is connected to the planned expansion and renovation of Randall Library. This complex project will periodically affect several parking areas around the library between now and completion (expected fall 2024). Please monitor campus inboxes for more information from facilities and parking as the project progresses.
Thank you for your attention and for exercising patience and caution. While these efforts may cause temporary inconvenience, they are part of a long-term plan to ensure UNCW has the facilities in place to continue educating Seahawks far into the future.
