Construction Impacts

December 4, 2024 - Please be advised there are several campus improvement projects happening during Winter Break that will cause temporary access changes to certain buildings, parking lots and sidewalks. Please exercise caution, follow all signage and plan accordingly if these projects affect your area. 
   
Alderman Hall 
During the week of Dec. 16, there will be temporary restrictions on some exterior door access as the doors are replaced. Signage will be in place. There will be no restrictions to ADA access or egress while the building is occupied. 

King Hall 
Access to the first floor is currently restricted. Second floor occupants have moved in. This includes Honors College, CSURF and UEFA (Undergraduate Education and Faculty Affairs). The northeast entrance (closest to the Clock Tower) is open during business hours for anyone who needs to interact with these units. Beginning Jan. 6, the film studies department will occupy the building. Beginning Jan. 8, the building will be open to the public.  

UNCW Library 
There will be disruptions in and around the library as contractors finish electrical work in Randall Hall, replace the link interior doors between Randall and Discovery Halls and install extension of underground utilities. The electrical work will result in planned power outages in Randall Hall and inconsistent or reduced power at other times while on temporary generator power. Please be aware of building, parking and sidewalk closures as indicated below.  Construction signage and barricades will be installed as appropriate.

  • Dec. 16–Jan. 1: Closed to patrons (students, staff and faculty who do not work in RH and community visitors) 
  • Jan. 2: Building reopens; see schedule for hours
• Discovery Hall hours:
  • Dec. 16-20: Open 9 a.m–5 p.m. 
  • Dec. 21-22: Closed 
  • Dec. 23: Open 9 a.m.–5 p.m. 
• UNCW Library Parking Impacts   
  • Kenan Hall Drive parking lot south of Discovery Hall will be closed Dec. 16–Jan. 10
  • Two parking spaces adjacent to Randall Hall loading dock will be closed Dec. 16-21
  • Randall Hall south parking lot will be closed Dec. 19-20
• UNCW Library Sidewalks Impacts
  • Sidewalk south of Discovery Hall will be closed Dec. 16– Jan. 10
  • Portions of sidewalks west of Discovery Hall leading to the main entrance will be closed Jan. 6-27
  • A portion of sidewalk north of Discovery Hall will be closed Jan. 10– 27

July 12, 2024 - Galloway Hall is currently an active demolition site and is extremely hazardous within the fenced boundaries. For your safety and the safety of others, please be advised that entry to the site is strictly prohibited. Only Office of Facilities authorized staff are allowed on-site; there are no exceptions. There have been reports of individuals attempting to enter the site to retrieve bricks. We must emphasize that this is both dangerous and illegal. Unauthorized entrants are trespassing and will be managed as such, potentially leading to arrest.

All building materials, including bricks, are property of the State of North Carolina and may not be removed from the site except by the contractor, who is contractually obligated to dispose of them at an appropriate off-site recycling facility.

Additionally, please refrain from stopping or slowing down in the middle of the roadway near the demolition site, as this is creating traffic issues and posing a safety hazard.

We understand there is interest in acquiring these bricks. Commemorative bricks will be made available for presale on the UNCW Bookstore website next week. Quantities are limited.

July 8, 2024 - The demolition of Galloway Hall is slated to begin this week, potentially starting as early as Tuesday but more likely on Wednesday. 

Please be aware that due to increased construction traffic associated with the demolition, the overflow parking area next to the hitting facility on Reigel Road will be closed from July 1 until Aug. 30.

• Improving crosswalks and storm drainage
• Providing better roadway access for buses and fire trucks
• Enhancing picture takers’ safety by moving the popular photo spot away from the center of a roadway and closer to Hoggard, the first building on the UNCW campus.
