Leaving UNCW

  • Graduating Students

    Graduating Students

A few weeks before graduation, the Student Account's Office places holds on accounts of any degree candidate account with a balance, EVEN if it has not yet been billed.

Our office sends notices to those students, alerting them of the hold & providing an opportunity to resolve the charge prior to graduation & ensure timely receipt of the diploma.

It is still possible that charges could be incurred & billed after the date. If those charges become past due, a hold will be placed on the account.

Our holds prevent registration, release of diploma & official transcripts from the University.

  • Loan Obligations

Students who have borrowed from a University Loan or Federal Perkins Loan must complete an exit interview when they cease enrollment at UNCW. This includes students who withdraw & those who are graduating.

Exit interview may be completed by logging into your account through the ECSI website. Contact the Perkins Loan Specialist in the event you wish to make an appointment.

Failure to complete the exit counseling requirement could result in a loan being declared delinquent & or a hold being placed on your student account.

Our holds prevent registration, release of diploma & release of official transcripts from UNCW.

  • Withdrawing From Individual Courses

A reduction in hours after drop/add does not reduce the tuition charges on your account. Students who choose to withdraw from a class after the drop/add date will not receive an adjustment of the tuition & fees unless they withdraw from all classes.

Students should consult the Withdrawal Credit Schedule for percentages.

  • Withdrawing From All Courses
    • Check the important links on the Leaving UNCW on the website to be sure that you have completed all of the appropriate notifications. Review the withdrawal tuition & fee credit schedule to view the prorated rate for refunds.
    • Special course fees & health insurance premium will not be reduced/refunded after the add/drop period has ended.
    • Room & board refunds are pro-rated differently, if applicable please reach out to Housing and/or Auxiliary Services.
    • Official withdrawal procedures begin in the Dean of Student’s Office for Undergraduate Students & the Graduate School for Graduate Students.
      • Undergraduate Students - official withdrawal for undergraduate students can be done online. For more information, visit the Registrar’s Office website.

Graduate Students – official withdrawal for graduate students begins in the Graduate School located in James Hall on the second floor.

  • Returning Financial Aid Money after Withdrawing

Students receiving Financial Aid are encouraged to contact the Office of Scholarships & Financial Aid before withdrawing from UNCW. Students who have been awarded federal financial aid are subject to the Return of Title IV Funds policy if they withdraw from courses or withdraw from the University.

Withdrawing from courses may require the return of awarded Title IV funds & may result in a balance due on your tuition & fees bill.

Federal Title IV aid includes: Direct Loans, PLUS Loans, Pell Grants, & SEOG Grants.
