Guidelines

Campus Recreation Guidelines

Campus Recreation strives to maintain a clean, safe, and inclusive environment while honoring personal workout clothing preferences.

  • While using Campus Recreation facilities a top, shorts or pants, and athletic, non-marking shoes, unless specifically designated for the area, are required.
  • Tops must cover the chest area and bottoms must cover the buttocks past the gluteal crease.
  • Clothing that is deemed unsafe will be addressed by department staff.

As you use the facility, recognize that exposed skin can be at risk to disease exposure. Patrons can help minimize the risk for themselves and others by limiting skin contact to equipment by utilizing a towel in the Fitness Center and wiping down fitness equipment before and after use.

Fitness Center / Group Fitness

  • Appropriate athletic attire must be worn to workout in the Fitness Center: i.e. no jeans, khakis, or cargo type shorts/pants may be worn. Attire cannot have buttons or rivets on them due to the potential damage to the equipment they may cause.

Aquatics

  • Clothing that is overly heavy such as denim, hoodies, jackets, sweatpants, or large/bulky items that cause excessive weight in water, are prohibited. Swimwear should not have been worn for exercising or in outdoor bodies of water immediately prior to pool use. 

Adventure Trips

  • Proper shoes must be worn at all times during Seahawk Adventures trips.
    • Closed-toed for any hiking or climbing trips.
    • A closed-toed shoe or sandal with a heel strap for kayaking and stand up paddle boarding.
    • The only time participants are not required to wear shoes is on surf clinics.
  • A properly fitted and zipped PFD must be worn at all times while kayaking.
  • Appropriate clothing should be worn for all Trips. Your Trip Lead will share activity-specific clothing recommendations via email before your trip leaves.

Challenge Course

  • Proper closed-toed shoes must be worn at all times during all challenge course programs.
    • Flip-flops, shoes secured with straps, mules/clogs (shoes worn like mules/clogs), open-toed/open-heeled shoes or shoes with high heels are not permitted for any activity
    • If improper footwear is worn, the individual is eligible to participate in group discussions but not the activity itself.
  • A shirt must be worn at all times during all challenge course programs.
  • Appropriate clothing should be worn for all challenge course programs.  Dress for the weather and type of activity:
    • Low Course and High Course: Recommend athletic clothing
    • Low Course and High Course: Recommend layers for cold weather or rain gear if prompted (predicted storms may impact location or a potential cancellation)
    • High Course: Require pants/shorts/leggings to be long enough to cover skin when wearing harness

Climbing Wall

  • All climbers must wear a top while climbing/bouldering, ensuring gear does not touch skin.
  • Climbing Shoes or Athletic closed-toed/closed-heeled shoes. It is highly recommended that climbers wear climbing shoes. Bare feet are not permitted.
  • Socks must be worn with all rental shoes.
  • It is recommended to remove all jewelry to prevent damage to your property and self. Staff have the final call on jewelry.
  • Rings and Long necklaces must be removed prior to climbing.
  • Hair must be kept away from climbing gear. Staff may recommend tying hair back.
  • All pockets must be free of items (e.g., coins, keys, knives, cell phones, etc.).

Competitive Sports

  • All facility rules apply.

Equipment Rentals

  • For Seahawk Adventures equipment rentals, please see specific policies on our Online Store.

Trip, Clinic, and Workshop Participant Policies

  • All Seahawk Adventures Trips, Clinics, and Workshops are drug and alcohol-free. Violation of this policy can result in immediate removal from a program.
  • Participants must follow all instructions given by the Seahawk Adventures Staff Team.
  • Participants will be responsible for providing their clothing, footwear, and some personal items. Items needed for a program will be communicated before the program occurs.
  • Participants will be asked to disclose certain medical information for program planning and in the event of an emergency. Information requested includes known allergies, dietary restrictions, and certain medical conditions.
  • Refunds will only be given if Seahawk Adventures cancels a program.

The following rules and regulations have been established for the benefit of all users of the swimming facilities to ensure the safe operation of the pools and to provide enjoyable recreational opportunities for all.

Guests are requested to cooperate in observing these rules and to obey the instructions of the Aquatics Staff. Guests violating rules are subject to the revocation of their swimming privileges.

Access and Entry:

  • No one may enter the swimming area unless the pool is officially open and aquatic staff members are present.
  • Children age 16 and below must be supervised at all times in the pool area. Under no circumstances are children to be left unattended.
  • In the water, an adult age 17+ must directly supervise children aged 12 years and below. All supervisory adults and children must demonstrate the ability to perform the below swim test if asked to by an aquatics staff member.
  • Aquatics staff reserves the right to require patrons to demonstrate swimming ability by asking them to perform a swim test.
    • Swim 25 yards (75 feet) non-stop using front crawl ("Freestyle")
    • Body must be horizontal
    • Flutter kick required: no bent knees or "bicycle" kick
    • Face in water; Rhythmic breathing to front or side
    • Over water arm recovery (No dog paddle)
    • Jump into deep water, surface unassisted, tread water for one minute in a vertical position with mouth above water line
    • Exit from pool unassisted
  • A parent/guardian must be within arm’s reach of any child unable to swim and/or using a flotation device.
  • Parents/guardians are not to swim laps while they are with their children in the pool.
  • Campus Recreation Staff, or designee, have final authority and full discretion on all offenses and/or occurrences not directly addressed in the preceding rules and regulations.
  • Patrons suspected to be under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol are not permitted in the pool area and will be removed from the premises.

Pool Usage:

  • Children should not use the swimming pool without adult supervision.
  • Adults should not swim alone.
  • Any injury occurring in the pool must be reported to an aquatics staff member immediately.
  • Diving is prohibited in any area of the Indoor Pool that is less than 5 feet deep and is prohibited in any area of the Outdoor Pool.
  • Backwards entries, twists, and flips are prohibited in both the Indoor and Outdoor Pools.
  • Horseplay is not tolerated. Running, pushing, dunking, water fighting, wrestling, jumping without caution, abuse, inappropriate language, or any other behavior that can jeopardize the safety and health of others is not permitted.
  • Spitting, spouting of water, blowing nose, urinating and/or defecating are prohibited in the pool areas.
  • Prolonged underwater swimming is prohibited.
  • Only Campus Recreation instructor led coaching and swim lessons are permitted in the pool area. 
  • A cleansing shower must be taken before entering the pool.
  • Gum chewing is not permitted anywhere in the pool area.
  • Glass containers, alcoholic beverages, drugs, and pets are not permitted. Service animals are permitted in the pool area but not in the pool itself.
  • Starting blocks can only be utilized for diving and only in a lane occupied by one person. Aquatics staff reserve the right to ban usage for unsafe use.
  • Lap Lanes are reserved for those persons wishing to swim laps undisturbed. Swimmers must enter the lap pool from the ends of the lanes only. Please inform others that you are entering the lane. Always swim complete laps of the pool, please stop only at turning walls and move to the side to allow others to turn and continue. Once lap swimming is complete, please exit your lane so others may enter.
  • Lap lanes are intended for multiple swimmers. Lap swimmers are encouraged to share lanes with others at a similar pace and select an appropriate lap swimming pattern such as circle swimming (counterclockwise near the lane markers and pass in the middle, stay to the right). It is not uncommon to swim four or more people to a lane if a similar pace is used. Lap swimmers may be asked by aquatics staff to move to another lane to more closely match swimming pace. Please comply as this will make everyone's swim more enjoyable.
  • Hanging on the lane lines and swimming through lap lanes is prohibited. Patrons who repeatedly disrupt lap swimmers will be asked to leave.

Equipment:

  • Kickboards, pull buoys, dumbbells, flotation belts, and noodles are used for exercise and swim lessons only. Only US Coast Guard approved flotation devices provided by the aquatics staff may be utilized.
  • US Coast Guard approved and labeled life jackets may be worn. Water wings ("swimmies") may not be worn. Back floats, bubbles, rings (including those built into bathing suits) or one-sided floatation devices are prohibited.
  • Inner tubes, inflatable boats and rafts, or inflatable bathing suits are only permitted in the pool during designated times.
  • SCUBA equipment may not be used except during approved instructional programs.
  • Goggles are permitted.
  • Use of Campus Recreation fins are permitted. 

Inclement Weather:

  • During inclement weather, both the Indoor and Outdoor pools will be closed, and the entire area cleared of patrons at the discretion of the aquatics staff members.
  • For thunder and lightning, both the Indoor and Outdoor pools and the surrounding area will re-open 30 minutes after the last observation of thunder and/or lightning. The LSRC utilizes the Earth Network Lightning Detection system which will alert users when lighting is detected in the area and provides an “All Clear” alert when the inclement weather has moved out of the area, and it may be possible to reopen the pool(s).
  • For shelter-in-place, guests must vacate both pool areas and can seek shelter in the pool locker rooms.

Swimming Apparel:

  • Clothing that is overly heavy such as denim, hoodies, jackets, sweatpants, or large/bulky items that cause excessive weight in water, are prohibited. Swimwear should not have been worn for exercising or in outdoor bodies of water immediately prior to pool use. 

Age & Health/Safety Restrictions:

  • Any person having an open sore, inflamed eye, cold, nasal or ear discharge, communicable disease, or who is wearing any kind of bandage to cover an open (unhealed) wound will not be permitted in the pool. No band-aids or casts may be worn into the pools.
  • Infants/children who are not toilet trained and adults who are incontinent, who wish to enter any pool, must wear a swim diaper which must fit snugly around the legs and waist. If the diaper becomes soiled, this person must exit the pool immediately and may not return until he/she has taken or been given a soap shower and has been covered by a new swim diaper. A fecal accident in the pool requires a shutdown of a minimum of 30 minutes for cleaning and sanitation.
  • Children 6 years of age or older must change in the gender appropriate locker room. Gender inclusive locker rooms are available in the main pool entrance.

Outdoor Pool:

  • All policies listed above apply to the Outdoor Pool area.
  • Season: April to September 30
  • Food and drink (in non-glass, re-sealable containers) is permitted in this area.
  • During inclement weather, the Outdoor Pool will be closed and the entire area cleared of patrons at the discretion of the aquatics staff members.
  • During periods of cool weather, the Outdoor Pool will not open when the air temperature is below 60 degrees Fahrenheit. If the temperature falls below 60 degrees Fahrenheit the pool will stay open at the discretion of the aquatics staff.
  • The use of tobacco products and E-Cigarettes is prohibited.
  • All use of the Challenge Course MUST be in conjunction with Seahawk Adventures programming. Any other use would be considered trespassing and is not allowed.
  • Proper recreational clothing and footwear should be worn when participating in physical activities. Athletic shoes that are closed-toed and closed-heeled are required.
  • Personal gear of a participant (i.e. harness, helmet, lanyard, belay device) may NOT be used. All gear will be supplied for you by Seahawk Adventures.
  • There are varying age requirements for Seahawk Adventure programming. All participants must follow these guidelines in the respective activities. Please see Course Options on the Challenge Course webpage for complete details.
  • Please show respect to your facilitators, fellow participants, and the environment utilized for the Challenge Course.
  • Please follow all risk management instructions provided to you on the Ropes Course. The facilitator reserves the right to ask a participant to leave should these policies or instructions not be followed.
  • Members or Alumni (including Alumni sponsoring themselves as a guest) may check out available equipment from the Member Services Desk and/or Fitness Center Desk. Climbing equipment is available for check out during Open Bouldering and Top-Rope Climbing Hours at the Climbing Wall Desk.
  • Sponsors must check out equipment for their guest(s).
  • All equipment must be returned in the same condition it was checked out.
  • Members will be charged for damaged or lost equipment.
  • No grasping or hanging on basketball rims or nets.
  • Only Campus Recreation issued indoor soccer balls may be used in the MAC Gym.
  • Indoor Soccer may only be played in the MAC Gym.
  • Participants may request Volleyball and Badminton/Pickleball nets to be setup. The primary location for this is Court 4.

Climbing Wall:

  • All Pat Leonard Student Recreation Center general policies must be observed.
  • Check in at the Climbing Wall Desk each visit prior to climbing.
  • All climbers must have a signed Policy Agreement on file to climb. A new form must be completed each academic year.
  • Climbing is only available under the supervision of a Climbing Wall staff member.
  • Exercise care, common sense, and self-preservation at all times.
  • Do not distract people while they are belaying or spotting another climber.
  • Stand back from the climbing walls unless you are spotting another climber. Never stand directly under or in the vicinity of someone who is climbing.
  • Report any problems with the walls, equipment or another climber’s behavior to a member of staff immediately.

Climbing Wall (Bouldering Specific)

  • Bouldering is allowed during approved times only.
  • The LSRC highly recommends the use of spotters while bouldering. It is encouraged to ask the Climbing Wall staff about proper spotting techniques.
  • Bouldering is only allowed up to the teal line marked on the wall.

Climbing Wall (Top Rope Specific)

  • The figure eight follow through knot is the only knot allowed to secure the rope to the climber’s harness.
  • In order to belay in the facility, participants must pass a belay test each academic year.

The following dress code is required, in addition to the general LSRC guidelines on appropriate attire:

  • All climbers must wear a top while climbing/bouldering, ensuring gear does not touch skin.

The following actions are prohibited in the climbing wall area:

  • Swinging or jumping on ropes.
  • Climbing into a position where your harness will be level with or higher than the anchors.
  • Grab onto anchors at the end of the climbing routes.
  • No items in the Fall Zones or traffic areas. It is recommended for all personal items to be kept in a locker.
  • Using Headphones/Earbuds. Staff must be able to openly communication with the climber at all times.
  • Stepping on ropes and dropping/tossing carabineers or belay devices.
  • Climbers shall not be under the influence of recreational drugs or alcohol.

Climbing Wall staff reserve the right to refuse wall access for the following reasons including, but not limited to:

  • Individuals attempting to climb dangerously.
  • Individuals suspected of recent alcohol or other drug use.
  • Individuals who attempt to climb with visibly unsafe or unapproved climbing gear.
    • Fit, obvious damage, etc.
  • Climbing Wall staff has the right to remove climbing privileges for the day and to recommend long term removal of climbing privileges for violation of these regulations.
  • When there is a maximum number of climbers in the wall (15), a 2-hour time limit is in place for climbers and a 20 minute time limit per rope.

Equipment:

  • Equipment Loan Statement: Seahawk Adventures has equipment available for check out for climbing wall use during open hours, including: climbing shoes, harness, chalk bags, belay devices, and helmets. The climber is responsible for safeguarding, proper care, and use of the equipment and will use it only in accordance with the information and instruction supplied. The climber agrees to report any damage incurred while the equipment is used. The climber is obligated to return all equipment to the Climbing Wall Desk prior to departure.
  • Personal Equipment: The following personal climbing gear is permitted: harness (UIAA or equivalent certification), climbing shoes, helmet, and chalk bag with chalk sock (no loose chalk) or liquid chalk. The LSRC is not responsible for ensuring the safety of personal climbing gear before use and will not be held responsible for any loss, damage, or wear and tear to an individual’s personal equipment.
    • The user acknowledges the equipment is appropriate for climbing

To utilize the Recreational Fields Complex, Outdoor Recreation Complex, and Pat Leonard Student Recreation Center, members must have a valid UNCW One Card. If you do not have your One Card your options are:

  • Retrieve your UNCW One Card
  • Utilize Campus Recreations - Digital Authentication & Mobile Credentials

Members may sponsor up to 2 guests and are responsible for supervising their guests at all times. Guests for the Pat Leonard Student Recreation Center will need:

  • Valid government issued picture ID and sponsorship from current student, faculty or staff member.
  • To purchase a $10 guest pass from the Member Services Desk located inside the Pat Leonard Student Recreation Center.
  • Participants 16 years and older may use the Fitness Center.
  • Participants must have a towel and wipe down equipment after use.
  • Outside Personal Training is prohibited.
  • Fitness Center equipment, including dumbbells, slam balls, etc., are not permitted outside of the Fitness Center unless supervised by a Personal Trainer.
  • Campus Recreation Staff reserves the right to stop equipment misuse to prevent injury and/or preserve the life of the equipment, if they determine a piece of equipment is not being used appropriately.
  • Participants may not use walls as throwing rebounders.
  • Collars are required for all barbell lifts.
  • No slamming or dropping of weights.
  • Spotters and weight belts are recommended. Weight belts can be checked out at the Fitness Center Desk.
  • Participants should return all weights to racks.
  • No gum, food or drink other than water is allowed in any activity area. Exception: Food and drinks are allowed at the Outdoor Leisure Pool.
  • Water must be in an approved plastic, sealed container (32 oz. maximum).

Pre-Registration:

  • Pre-registration is required for all cycle classes.
  • Pre-registration is encouraged for all non-cycle group fitness classes, but not required. Pre-registration will be available to fill up to 95% of the class capacity and the remaining 5% will be available for first-come first-serve walk-ins. 
  • Pre-registration will open 48 hours prior to the start time of a class and will be available until 15 minutes before the class begins. 
  • Participants will be checked-in for class at the studio door prior to entering the class. 
  • Once there are 5 minutes before the class begins, any participants who pre-registered that have not arrived yet will have their registrations canceled, and their seats may be given to walk-in participants if the class has reached its maximum capacity.
  • Guests:
    • Guests cannot be pre-registered for classes and may only use the first-come first-serve walk-in option. 
    • If a Campus Recreation member pre-registers for a class, this does not guarantee a spot for their guest. 
    • Guests are encouraged to arrive early to secure a spot with their membership sponsor. 

Mind/Body Studio:

  • Studio 129, the Mind/Body studio, is available for open recreation 30 minutes after the fitness center opens and will close 30 minutes prior to the fitness center closing. Please refer to the facility hours of operation for updated hours.
  • The Mind/Body studio will be closed during group fitness classes and private events.
  • The Mind/Body studio is a first-come, first-serve space. Participants may dance, weightlift, stretch, meditate, do yoga, etc. in the space. 
  • Doors must remain open at all times
  • Shoes are required, unless using a yoga mat.
  • Participants can use any equipment in the studio closet. Please clean and put away after use.
  • Equipment found in the studio closet must remain within the studio. Do not remove any equipment from the studio.
  • No music should be played out loud from any external speakers.

Attire:

  • Cycling classes: Shoes are not provided; however you are welcome to use your own,
  • Appropriate exercise clothing is required. Street clothes such as jeans, khakis, dress pants, or anything with zippers, buttons, belts, or rivets are prohibited.
  • Shoes are required in all classes with the exception of mind/body classes that do not use weights.

General Policies:

  • In order to ensure the safety of participants, class size is limited depending on class type and equipment used. Class capacities can be found on our group fitness schedule.
  • If you have any injuries or need a modification for an exercise, please talk to your instructor before class begins and let them know of any restrictions. They will be glad to assist you.
  • No gum, food, or beverages allowed, except for water in a sealable plastic container.
  • Only authorized Seahawk Fitness Team Members are trained to use the audiovisual system in the studios.
  • Campus Recreation is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Please secure your personal belongings in a locker room prior to attending a group fitness class.
  • Participants are encouraged to regularly monitor their own workout intensity and take water breaks frequently.
  • For your safety, please refrain from using your cell phone once class begins and set to silent.
  • Please show respect to your instructor and fellow participants.
  • The instructor reserves the right to ask a participant to leave should these policies not be followed.
  • The Department of Campus Recreation and its staff are not responsible for personal belongings. Please secure all belongings while in the LSRC as we cannot ensure the safety of any items that are not properly secured during your visit.
  • Daily use lockers and wallet lockers are available at no charge.
  • Lockers are located in both men’s and women’s general and pool locker rooms. Locks are available for checkout at the Member Services Desk.
  • Locks are for use during stay in LSRC only. Personal locks will be cut off and the contents of the locker removed at the end of each day. Any items removed from a lockers (including wallet lockers) will be inventoried and placed with the Assistant Director – Informal Recreation. Please call 910.962.7443 to verify.
  • All items not claimed within a week will be sent to a local charity (i.e. Goodwill or the Salvation Army).
  • The LSRC staff will keep all non-valuables in Member Services storage for a minimum of two weeks. After those two weeks, the items will be washed and donated to a local charity (i.e. Goodwill or the Salvation Army).
  • Valuables will be kept for one semester in the locked cabinet in Member Services storage and then transferred to the appropriate campus department (Campus Police, Lock Shop, etc.).
  • If you feel you have lost something contact the Member Services desk at 910.962.3261 to verify.
  • Due to limited floor space as well as to prevent an unnecessary tripping hazard and keep walkways clear for emergencies participants should store personal belongings such as, bags, backpacks, etc. in one of the provided cubbies located throughout the facility or day lockers located in both the general and pool locker rooms (locks may be checked out at the Member Services Desk).
  • Participants utilizing court areas may place belongings along the walls, on the bleachers or in the team boxes of the MAC Gym. Campus Recreation is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
  • No photography or videography is permitted without permission from the Director of Campus Recreation. Please contact 910.962.7443.
  • Personal, portable speakers including but not limited to: boom boxes, Bluetooth speakers, etc are not allowed in the LSRC except those used for Department of Campus Recreation programs. Individual headphones are permissible. The Pat Leonard Student Recreation Center streams music within the fitness center, pools, and climbing wall.
  • Primary use of facility is for Competitive Sports Programming but free play is allowed when there are no scheduled activities. UNCW students, faculty and staff and their guests only (who have purchased a day pass) are permitted to use the facility.
  • Facility has set open hours for free play, Competitive Sports programming (Intramural Sports and Sport Club events), and approved reservations. 
  • Proper recreational clothing and footwear should be worn when participating in physical activities or as required by Campus Recreation guidelines or Sport Club governing associations.
  • Guests and minors must be supervised/accompanied by his/her sponsor at all times.
  • Pets are NOT allowed.
  • No outside catering allowed without prior University and Campus Recreation approval.

  • Facilities may only be used by current UNCW students, current or retired faculty/staff and their guests.
  • All users must present a valid UNCW ID upon request.
  • Scheduled activities through Campus Recreation have priority over open recreation.
  • Lights are enabled for safety. Controls are located near the playing surface.
  • Activity areas may be closed or events canceled if conditions warrant (i.e. repairs/maintenance,
    power outage, inclement weather).
  • No pets allowed.
  • No glass containers, alcohol, tobacco, or e-cigarettes allowed.
  • No golf allowed.
  • Do not insert any ground or tent stakes throughout the complex.
  • 10. Appropriate clothing and foot wear for activities must be worn.
  • Bikes/skateboards/scooters must be stored in assigned areas.
  • Fighting, disrespectful conduct or improper use of equipment or facilities will result in indefinite loss of recreation field privileges.
  • All users must follow the above policies and comply with any directives from university staff or be subject to removal from Shore]ine Sports Complex.
  • All participants use the Shoreline Sports Complex at their own risk.

Tennis Court Specific:

  • Facilities may only be used by current UNCW students, current or retired faculty/staff and their guests.
  • Tennis or Pickleball activities only.
  • Pickleball nets should be taken down after use.
  • A time limit may be imposed by Campus Recreation staff during times of high use.
  • Scheduled activities through Campus Recreation have priority over open recreation.
  • All users must follow the above policies and comply with any directives from university staff or be subject to removal from Shoreline Sports Complex.
  • All participants use the Shoreline Sports Complex at their own risk.
