The University of North Carolina Wilmington has announced the recipients of the 2024 UNCW Alumni Association Distinguished Awards. The distinguished awards are presented to individuals in recognition of their extraordinary achievement, outstanding character and exemplary service to the university and community. Sergio Madera-Garcia '21, Distinguished Young Alumnus of the Year, is the Leadership Development Program director in N.C. State's Student Leadership and Engagement Office. Read more here.
The UNCW Mentors Initiating Community Action, Support and Advocacy (MI CASA) program will receive $87,000 in support from the New Hanover Community Endowment, the university announced.
The NHCE funding will help the long-standing and successful program provide high school students opportunities to tour Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) throughout the state. It will also provide laptops to program mentees to close technology gaps, fund participation in the Young Writers Camp and organize a Transition Orientation Day. Read the full article here.

Several UNCW Seahawks have made the Wilmington 100 list, an annual Greater Wilmington Business Journal initiative "to recognize the top 100 Power Players, Influencers, Innovators, Connectors and Rising Stars impacting Southeastern North Carolina's business landscape." Chancellor Aswani K. Volety and Eldemira Segovia, UNCW Centro Hispano director and New Hanover Community Endowment vice chair, are included in the Power Player category, which WilmingtonBiz describes as "the businesspeople and officials having the greatest impact on the region's business and economic landscape."
