The effects of Hurricane Helene will be felt in southeastern North Carolina starting Thursday afternoon (Sept. 26) and continuing through Friday (Sept. 27). Expect heavy rain and strong winds from Thursday night into Friday morning. Local rainfall may be 1-2 inches, with a small chance of flash flooding, according to the National Weather Service Wilmington. There is also a risk of isolated tornadoes on Thursday night. Conditions are expected to improve by Friday afternoon.
The university is continuing to closely monitor the current weather conditions. At this time, the university plans to maintain a normal operating schedule. If a change in conditions requires a reduced operating status, an official email message will be distributed to the campus community from the Office of University Relations and will be posted immediately on the public UNCW Alert webpage. Depending on conditions, the university may also use UNCW Alert text messaging, and the Emergency Information Hotline (1.888.657.5751) may be activated.
The university will send a weather-related update by Friday afternoon unless conditions warrant earlier messaging. Please continue to monitor UNCW inboxes, the UNCW homepage, UNCW Alert page and social media feeds (Facebook and X). Your safety is our top priority. Please carefully assess weather conditions before deciding to travel to campus during inclement weather.
Students should contact their course instructor(s) as soon as possible if they feel weather conditions will not permit them to attend class. Students should also consult their course syllabi for further details concerning class attendance and monitor their student email and Canvas site for updated messages from instructor(s). University policy on class attendance can be found in the UNCW Academic Catalogues in the University Regulations section for the undergraduate catalogue and in the Academic Regulations and Procedures section for the graduate catalogue.
Any additional questions regarding courses should be directed to the course instructor(s) or the academic department chair/school director. (A list of academic departments/schools can be found on each college website.)
Employees who need to alter their work schedules due to storm-related reasons should contact their supervisor as soon as possible to provide information and discuss options. Should conditions warrant the university to declare an emergency condition level, additional information and guidance can be found on the Adverse Weather Policy and Leave webpage.
Please note that many UNCW Family Weekend events slated for Sept. 27-29 are scheduled to proceed as planned. Event schedules may be adjusted based on the weather. Any changes will be updated on the Family Weekend website, communicated via email by sponsoring offices and shared during check-in at the Warwick Center on Friday and Saturday.
Weather conditions may impact other campus events and activities. Before heading out, please check the campus venue websites for the latest updates.
