Distance Education & Extension Students

The associated costs and procedures regarding regalia for distance education/extension students differ from those of on-campus students. Instructions are listed below regarding how to purchase your Commencement regalia.

Unlike on-campus students, distance education and extension students are not charged a Commencement student fee each semester. Therefore, if a distance/extension student wants to participate in their corresponding Commencement ceremony, they will need to purchase their regalia. For more information about student fees, visit the Student Accounts website.

Below are the regalia costs for distance education and extension students. Shipping will be $15.95.

  • Undergraduate - (Cap, gown and tassel) - $47.40
  • Master's - (Cap, gown and tassel, hood) - $89.00

Doctoral Students must contact the Bookstore to make arrangements for rental regalia. Email Craig Hewett at ctr-hewettc@uncw.edu. The cost for doctoral regalia rental will be $60.

Degree with Distinction

Undergraduates (only -- graduate students do not receive university honors) who earn a degree with distinction are eligible to purchase the official university honor cord. Distance education and extension undergraduate students who earn a minimum of a 3.50 GPA on all course work attempted, including transfer courses, will receive a degree with distinction. For Commencement purposes, distinction is determined by the earned GPA at the end of the previous semester.

(Example: For Spring Commencement, your eligibility will be based on the earned GPA at of the end of the Fall semester; for the Fall Commencement ceremony, eligibility is based on last fully completed semester - either Spring or Summer.)

There are three levels of distinction based on your overall average.

Cum Laude - overall average of 3.50
Magna Cum Laude - overall average of 3.70
Summa Cum Laude - overall average of 3.90

Final distinction will be determined once all grades are submitted for the term and will be printed on the official diploma.
