Spanish, B.A. Program Overview

Reading, Writing, Speaking

Our program allows you to explore the Spanish language and culture through diverse courses from linguistics to literature, film and pedagogy. You can further your knowledge through faculty-led study abroad programs, internships in the region and overseas, and work with public schools and nonprofits in the region.

Gain the ability to converse in social situations on a range of topics. Learn to read short stories, news items, bibliographical information, social notices, personal correspondence, business letters and conduct research. Take notes, write correspondence, narratives, descriptions and analytical essays – all in Spanish!

Internships and Service Learning

Our program collaborates with several agencies in the region to provide internships, where you can gain practical experience involving observation and application of foreign language.

Study Abroad

Develop language fluency and experience new cultures by taking advantage of UNCW's study abroad programs, including faculty led programs in Argentina, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru and Spain.

Requirements for a Major in Spanish

  • 36 hours (12 must be SPN 303, SPN 305, SPN 306, and SPN 307; 6 must be at the 400 level and up to 6 may be at the 200 level.)
  • Only 3 hours at the 400 level may be obtained by means of SPN 490, SPN 491, SPN 498, or SPN 499
  • A grade of "C-" or better is required in each course counted toward the major and a "C" average or better for all courses counted toward the major
