Academic Programs

The UNC Wilmington School of Social Work offers programs of study that will prepare you to work in governmental, academic, non-profit and for-profit settings in community, regional, state and national systems. 

Through classroom experiences, required service-learning and internships (called field placements in social work education), you'll gain knowledge and skills vital to the practice and research of social work. 

Bachelor of Social Work

Our Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program educates students in generalist social work practice, engages them in scholarly inquiry and community service and instill the values of ethical practice, social justice, self-determination, empowerment and honoring diverse populations. Guided by a strengths perspective of generalist practice, the School of Social Work prepares students for practice with individuals, families, groups and communities, and for advanced study in social work and other related fields.

We also offer a unique HST-BSW program designed for students with an Associate of Applied Science in Human Services Technology or an Associate of Applied Science in Human Services degree from a North Carolina community college to complete their bachelor’s degree in social work.

Master of Social Work

Our Master of Social Work (MSW) program is committed to the preparation of graduates for a career dedicated to assisting individuals, groups, families, communities and organizations. While promoting equality and social and economic justice, faculty prepares graduates for practice in a culturally diverse society, upholding the values and ethics of the profession and teaching critical thinking skills designed to enhance the quality of life for all persons.
