UNDERSTANDING GENERATIVE AI AT UNCW
Generative AI includes a wide range of tools that can create or significantly revise academic work. These tools can be helpful, but their effectiveness depends on your understanding of both the tool and the subject you're working on. While AI tools can significantly aid students in various aspects of their learning journey they also must be used appropriately.
It is the responsibility of students to communicate with their instructors about expectations regarding AI use in each course. Instructors at UNCW have wide discretion in how they may incorporate AI into their course, if at all. Students must be certain that they are following their instructor’s expectations for the use of AI in their respective courses.
Generative Artificial Intelligence Guidelines – Tips for Success
1. Follow the AI guidelines outlined in your syllabus. These can potentially be different for each individual course you are enrolled in. If you're unsure about what's allowed, ask your instructor.
2. AI tools are great for inspiring ideas, exploring topics, and examining problems. However, they should be used to support your thinking, not replace it. Make sure your work reflects your own understanding.
3. Use AI generated content in a responsible way. AI generated outputs are known to potentially have biases, inaccuracies, and can elicit ethical concerns.
4. Be transparent and open about how you are using AI generated content. Properly document its use as necessary. You are expected to disclose, explain, and cite any AI assistance in your work, following relevant standards (e.g., APA, MLA, or course guidelines).
5. Never input personal or confidential information into generative AI tools. While many of these platform employs security measures like encryption, there's always a risk of data breaches or unauthorized access.
