The Office of Institutional Effectiveness manages the administration of all student course evaluations through the Anthology IDEA Course Evaluation Platform. At UNCW, course evaluations are just one of the many types of information used to inform faculty on teaching effectiveness.
Anthology, formerly Campus Labs, IDEA course evaluation instruments and reporting portal, was selected by faculty to replace the Student Perceptions of Teaching (SPOT) in 2013. The platform originated at Kansas State University with the intent to provide formative, constructive feedback to faculty to improve the overall quality of instruction and student learning. The Faculty Senate Evaluation Committee provides oversight to the course evaluation administration process, and the platform is managed by the Office of Institutional Research and Planning (IRP) through the Institutional Effectiveness Unit.
UNCW, in accordance with the Faculty Handbook, uses the Diagnostic Feedback Instrument (i.e., a 40-question course evaluation targeting teaching effectiveness and student progress on relevant course objectives) as the primary tool course evaluations. Course evaluations are defaulted to using this tool because it collects comprehensive information targeted to provide faculty with formative feedback on teaching and when applicable, is used for core faculty processes (e.g., reappointment, tenure and promotion).
