Jess Boersma Appointed Director of ETEAL

Dr. Jess Boersma has been appointed as the Director of ETEAL (Experiencing Transformative Education Through Applied Learning), UNCW’s Quality Enhancement Program. We were very fortunate to have two highly qualified candidates for this role, as well as the participation of a variety of members of the university community in the search process. Dr. Boersma’s appointment began 15 May 2014, following the end of his interim role.

Dr. Boersma is an Associate Professor of Spanish in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures and also served as the Interim Director of ETEAL for the past year. He came to UNCW in 2007 after serving as a lecturer of Spanish at the University of Rochester, and he received his PhD in Spanish jess boersmafrom Emory University in 2008. Dr. Boersma is an active scholar who has delivered numerous professional presentations in the fields of Spanish cultural production and applied learning, and whose work is highlighted by the publication of two peer-reviewed edited volumes with an international readership. He is currently preparing book manuscripts about the representation of violence in contemporary Spanish narrative and the culture of political dissent in 21st-century Spain. Dr. Boersma is involved as Principal Investigator or co-Investigator on grants and contracts totaling over $268,000 with additional proposals currently under review totaling more than $5,500,000. He has served for 6 years as a Faculty Senator, including 2 years as a member of the Faculty Senate Steering Committee. In addition to his formal academic experience, Dr. Boersma’s service in the U.S. Army Special Forces brings a unique perspective regarding applied learning and outreach. 

As Director of ETEAL, Dr. Boersma will be responsible for oversight and continued implementation of this broad-based initiative. This 5-year effort seeks to enhance applied learning at UNCW through funded initiatives, a summer institute, activities of the Applied Learning and Teaching Community, as well as collaborative interactions with many other campus units. Dr. Boersma has been extensively involved with student mentoring and during his year as Interim Director worked to implement the program, forge partnerships to enhance applied learning in a variety of venues, and develop new initiatives to promote novel applied learning opportunities. As anyone who has worked with Jess knows, he brings tremendous enthusiasm, dedication and energy to anything he pursues and we are deeply appreciative of his willingness to lead this very important program.
