We are currently only hiring students with Federal Work Study awards for our Student Receptionist position. Available positions are typically posted on Handshake in early June (and occasionally early December and early April). Feel free to contact our office for more information.

Student Receptionists assist the public, ULC students and tutors, and faculty and staff, through face-to-face, telephone, and email communications in a busy, student-oriented office. Gain valuable work experience while working for your university!

Job requirements include greeting students and explaining tutoring services, answering phone calls and emails, learning our appointment scheduling software, assisting ULC students and tutors with technology troubleshooting, attending periodic staff meetings and/or training events, assisting the ULC in marketing and training efforts, and providing general office upkeep and organization assistance.

Evening and Sunday hours are available.

STEM tutors conduct drop-in tutoring sessions and occasional one-on-one or small group sessions with students in BIO, CHM, CSC, MAT, PHY, or STT courses. Learn more about the position and apply today.

Tutoring takes place in the ULC STEM Lab during office hours. STEM tutors must be outgoing, quick thinkers, and able to work in a sometimes loud and often changing environment.

All STEM tutors must engage in our training program, which has received International Tutor Training Program Certification status through the College Reading and Learning Association.

Peer Mentors work one-on-one with students striving to achieve their academic goals. To that end, Peer Mentors serve as role models, counselors, confidants, and tutors, helping students to develop the skills necessary to succeed at UNCW. Sessions are conducted for an hour at a time.

All Peer Mentors must have qualifying experience and engage in our training program, which has received International Peer Educator Training Program Certification through the College Reading and Learning Association.

Supplemental Instruction Leaders (SILs) facilitate group peer study sessions for selected courses. SILs are chosen based on their performance in the class, overall academic performance, faculty recommendations and ability to communicate effectively.

Leaders stay abreast of the course material by attending class and meeting with the professors. They then conduct 2-3 review sessions each week for students currently enrolled in the course.

All SILs must engage in our training program, which has received International Peer Educator Training Program Certification through the College Reading and Learning Association.

Peer Tutoring Services Tutors work with UNCW students currently enrolled in University Studies courses and select non-University Studies courses. Tutors assist with course content and study strategies.

Tutoring occurs in the University Learning Center, located on the first floor of DePaolo Hall (DE 1056). Sessions are conducted for an hour at a time, and most sessions are one-on-one with the student (group sessions with up to three students are a possibility).

All learning tutors are required to pursue certification via our training program which has received International Tutor Training Program Certification status through the College Reading and Learning Association.

Peer writing consultants conduct writing consultations with students across the curriculum. Writing consultants work with students on global and local revision and many other writing skills.

Peer writing consultants help students with global revision concerns, like focus, development, audience, and organization. They also assist with local revision elements, including sentence level concerns, like punctuation and style. All writing consultants must have qualifying experience and engage in our tutor training program, which has received International Tutor Training Program Certification through the College Reading and Learning Association.

Students applying for an internship must also meet the minimum qualifications of the sponsoring academic department. No internships are available during the Summer.

To be considered for a Fall semester writing tutor position, submit your application no later than April 1st of the previous Spring semester.
