Not necessarily. We assign OWLs during consultants’ appointment availability, so they are scheduled depending upon open availability. However, sometimes we have appointment cancellations and might move your OWL up – this is not guaranteed, though.
OWLs are typically returned within 3-5 days after submission. We assign OWLs M-F from 8-5, so they are not scheduled over the weekend. During busier times of the semester (midterms, for example), the 3–5-day timeline may be extended.
Nope! OWLs are totally asynchronous. Your paper will be returned via email after it is completed.
Your writing consultant will look for the three concerns you indicated on the OWL survey, and they will also look for other writing patterns. The writing consultant will not proofread your paper (since we are not a copyediting service), but they will leave suggestions and offer guidance.
An OWL is asynchronous, so you do not have to visit the ULC for one to be completed. We also recommend submitting either a final draft (or close to one), for an OWL because what you submit is what the consultant will have to work with.
An in-person appointment allows more flexibility for visiting during any point of your writing process (brainstorming, for example), because you can collaborate with a consultant and go in-depth on your writing concerns.
