Seahawk Link Consideration
Seahawk Links serve as role models and mentors to first-year students through interactions in the classroom, by assisting new students with making connections, and hosting events for first-year students to enhance their sense of belonging at UNCW. As a Seahawk Link, you will:
- Enhance your communication, planning, public speaking, and facilitation skills
- Establish positive working relationships with UNCW faculty, staff, first-year students, and fellow Seahawk Links
- Assist in cultivating a positive classroom environment in First Year Seminar (UNI 101) classes
- Strengthen and demonstrate your knowledge of university resources
- Learn about various personal leadership styles and how these can enhance your interpersonal relationships
- Collaborate to solve and address problems
- Gain transferable skills that align with your personal and professional goals
- Serve as a positive role model and peer mentor to first-year students
- Provide support to incoming first-year students through individualized outreach
- Attend all training sessions
- Attend all weekly meetings during the fall semester
- Attend assigned First-Year Seminar course at least once per week during the fall semester
- Establish classroom expectations and contributions with assigned First-Year Seminar instructor
- Assist First-Year Seminar students in fulfilling course event requirements
- Facilitate the adjustment of new students to UNCW through the introduction of campus services, academic resources, and campus involvement opportunities
- Assist with facilitating events to increase first-year students' retention and persistence. These events include:
- Convocation
- First-year Student Welcome (formerly FYrst Friday)
- FYred Up for Finals
- First-year Spring Admit Welcome
- Spring Into Sophomore Year
To be considered for a Seahawk Link position you must:
- Be a full-time UNCW student in fall 2024
- Maintain a 2.5 cumulative UNCW GPA
- Maintain good disciplinary standing by adhering to the Student Code of Life and University Honor Code
- Be committed to fulfilling all Seahawk Link responsibilities
Important Dates
Throughout the Year, Seahawk Links are required take part in training, meetings and hold and assist with university events. Take a look at our calendar.
- Seahawk Links Spring Training: Wednesdays, 5-7 p.m.
- Seahawk Links Fall Training: August 2025 TBD
- First Year Move-In: August 16, 2025
- Convocation: August 2025 TBD
- Family Weekend: September 2025 TBD
- Fall Weekly Meetings: Thursdays 6:30-7:45 p.m. beginning August 28, 2025
- First Year Signature Events to include:
- Spring FYrst Friday
- Spring Into Sophomore Year
- Fall FYrst Friday
- FYred Up for Finals
You may have the opportunity to assist with Commencement Exercises in the Spring and Fall semesters.
Benefits & Compensation
Seahawk Links gain significant leadership experiences, develop professional relationships with faculty, staff, and students, learn to effectively facilitate in-class discussions and activities, and improve their communication skills.
New Seahawk Links receive $9/hour for meetings and training, assistance with required events, and attending first-year seminar classes. Seahawk Links will also receive one team shirt and a nametag as the official uniform.
