Isabelle Fogleman: South Africa: AIFS Abroad in Stellenbosch- Spring South Africa has deep history and culture, and the people are warm and welcoming. South Africa is also a great place for adventures such as hiking, surfing, or working with animals like penguins and elephants, but it also has a very tumultuous history surrounding Apartheid. I worked with the Iliso Care Society, an organization that provides education to young students and food for the needy where I learned more about social justice initiatives and a deeper understanding of race and culture. Studying abroad teaches independence and growth, as well as immerses you into a beautiful country and culture that you may have never experienced before. |
Sarah Foster: North Africa: *Summer in Morocco - Summer Studying Abroad allowed me to not only learn about a new culture, but completely immerse myself in Morocco. This country has the kindest people, the most beautiful landscapes, and food that will never be matched! I even enjoyed a camel ride in the Sahara Desert. In the five weeks, I was abroad, I felt I had learned more than I had in a semester. All aspects of my life were touched positively by my decision to study abroad, and my heart will forever belong to Morocco. |
Jakub Kreuter: Uganda: Applied Methods in Global Health Studying in Uganda was immensely fulfilling, I was introduced to a completely different world and way of life. What really makes living and studying in Uganda stand apart from other experiences are the people. Their willingness to invite you into their lives and help you explore the country's rich culture was invaluable. My most memorable experience was my spur of the moment decision to repel down a 100 meter waterfall. Shuffling down the first 30 feet of rock, I wasn't really sure why I had agreed. Once I was hanging next to the waterfall with the birds flying around me, my apprehension was instantly replaced with awe. |

Julia Anderson: Veritas University - Summer Studying abroad in Costa Rica is a good way to broaden your horizons culturally, educationally, and personally. Participating in this experience allowed me to greatly strengthen my Spanish skills, expand my cultural boundaries, and discover much more about myself, my capability, and my independence. I lived with a host family who became more like my actual family. This family made a huge difference in improving my Spanish and cultural skills and it became the greatest experience in my life. |
Anna Ward: Costa Rica: Veritas Univ. - Fall Studying abroad opens minds to new traditions, cultures, and lifestyles. It’s important to be able to adapt to new situations and gain an understanding of different people and societies. The most enriching part of my personal experience was getting to know my host families and appreciating their culture, language, and countries. My favorite place in Costa Rica was Tortuguero, a small car-less town located on the Caribbean. It was a magical community between rivers and the ocean, with extreme biodiversity and a welcoming environment. My favorite place in Chile was in my artsy host city, Valparaiso. I loved walking up the hills and looking down upon the beautiful ocean and multitude of colored and creatively built homes. |
Jessica Hampton: Global UNI 101: Explorations in Costa Rica – Short Term Fall The geographical and natural wonders of Costa Rica allow students the opportunity to try things such as ziplining, snorkeling, white water tubing, horseback riding, and many other amazing experiences that they may not get to do at home. The most enriching part of my study abroad experience was being able to visit a family who taught my class how to make tortillas and pottery from hand. Costa Rica held a simplistic and natural beauty that is becoming so rare to find other places in the world. My favorite experience in Costa Rica was hiking the Ricon de la Vieja National Park, and being able to see the boiling mud pits, natural hot springs, and the abundance of wildlife such as several species of monkeys, toucans, and various plants. After the tour of the mountain, we got to hike down to a waterfall and jump into the ice-cold water. It was so surreal and beautiful to see the vastly different forms of natural wonders this single park had to offer. |
Madi Nannery: Global UNI 101: Explorations in Costa Rica – Short Term Fall In my opinion, perspective is one of the most important aspects of life. Studying abroad truly allows you to deepen your perspective in the most authentic way. You get to physically live in the life of others and see the world in a way you have never viewed it before. It is the most valuable form of hands-on learning and an opportunity I think every student should take. Pura Vida is a phrase that Costa Rica lives by, meaning pure life. The simple and gracious way of living is something that positively impacts all that visit. There is a contagious happiness in the laid-back lifestyle that leaves all visitors with more peace than they came in with. |
Aveline Patrolia: Global UNI 101: Explorations in Costa Rica – Short Term Fall My experience in Guanacaste, Costa Rica will forever stick with me, along with my new lifelong friendships. There was so much the land had to offer, and I found myself in awe of the beautiful landscapes and the variety of landscapes that it had to offer. The most surreal moment for me was after a hike up El Rincon de la Vieja, when we went to swinging steps to swim in a crystal clear waterfall. My friends and I dove down and could see each other with perfect vision. The sun shone through to the bottom of the pool, there were monkeys and the most beautiful birds I'd ever seen in person. The most fantastic experience for me was meeting a lovely Costa Rican family that made their living selling pottery and collecting clay. They allowed us into their homes to see the way they lived with their family, and even helped us make tortillas and lunch from scratch. |
Brooke Beal: Costa Rica: *Physical Activity and Wellness in the Blue Zone - Summer I believe all students should find time to study abroad to travel to a different country and getting to experience different cultures firsthand is the ultimate learning experience. During my time in Costa Rica, I saw various communities and how their day-to-day lives differ from mine. In Costa Rica, they have a much more relaxed and slow-paced lifestyle where they value spending time with family and finding time for leisure activities. My favorite things about Costa Rica is the abundance of fresh fruits, especially mangos, paddle boarding in the Nosara river and learning to surf. If you have the opportunity to go abroad, I would highly recommend it! |
Rachel Labori: Mexico: *Oaxaca, Mexico: Here and There - Short-Term Spring Oaxaca, Mexico is a beautiful place filled with art, culture, and landscapes that are unforgettable. The two-week summer trip was filled with excursions and tours to see things like pyramids and waterfalls, and to deeply understand the rich history of the place and the people. My host family welcomed me with love and the community is patient and friendly. It was truly an amazing experience to fully immerse myself in another culture and improve my communication skills in Spanish. If I had the opportunity, I would go back to Oaxaca in a heartbeat. |
Shannon Cawley: Costa Rica: Danger Zone to the Costa Rican Blue Zone Costa Rica was transformative! The locals there were the friendliest people I have ever met and made the experience so lovely, as we were able to connect and they taught me a ton about Costa Rican culture. I loved the lush environment and wildlife there and speaking with the local vendors about their art and jewelry pieces. A memory that will stick with me forever was speaking with older folks at a senior center in Costa Rica. They were so thankful to have us there and shared wise words about how to live a happy life. We warmed up to each other quickly and had an impromptu dance session where I was blown away by the agility of people over 100 years old. It was incredible. |
Paige Chance: Global UNI 101: Explorations in Costa Rica Traveling has always been a huge part of my life. Each time I visit a new country, the most enriching part is experiencing a new culture and getting to connect with the people. This was absolutely a valuable part of both of my study abroad trips! However, I didn't expect to also become really close friends with the people I went with. I shared experiences with students just like me and they provided comfort, support, and laughter throughout my entire trip! My favorite place in Costa Rica was probably Rincon De La Vieja. We spent three days here where we hiked a gorgeous trail through their national park, swam in the Oropendola Waterfall, and took mud baths in volcanic clay. I also got to experience zip-lining for the first time which was absolutely terrifying but it felt amazing to step out of my comfort zone with friends! |
Sofia Isaacs: Chile: *Pontificia Univ. Catolica de Valparaiso (PUCV) Four months in Valparaiso surrounded in Chilean Spanish gave me the push I needed to improve my Spanish speaking and listening skills FAST. Valparaiso, Chile is a beautiful city rich in art, history, cafes, nightlife, and views of the Pacific Ocean, as well as diverse, dramatic natural landscapes. My friends and I found a trail to a hidden enormous waterfall with pools of crystal blue water. My host family made this experience more comfortable. We ate almost all meals together and we would talk about everything together! I will always cherish the friends and family I made in Valparaiso, Chile. |
Parry Jackson: Belize Archaeology Field School While staying in San Pedro, Belize I became close friends with the locals and went to local events. Many locals wanted to show us what their city was really like and we ended up doing the most amazing things. We went on a chartered boat and swam with sharks, went cave diving with Maya artifacts, to the local school and met the kids who lived on the island, to the local high school's prom and so many more things that would never have been possible without connecting with the locals. This experience taught me how to be compassionate, patient, and far more understanding to those around me. |
Molly McMorrow: Costa Rica: Danger Zone to the Costa Rican Blue Zone Costa Rica is home to one of the few blue zones in the entire world, a place where people tend to live significantly longer than those elsewhere. I learned much from the activities, habits, and lifestyles of the people living there because I was fully immersed in the culture and was living the lifestyle. A dance party with the members of a senior center was my favorite activity. My group and I taught some of the oldest people in the world classic dances such as the cupid shuffle and the YMCA, and they were fully able to participate due to their incredible health. Getting to participate in and practice the activities as well as having conversations with people who have done this their whole life left a much greater impact on me than a classroom would have. |
Allison Scoda: Belize Archaeology Field School To me, studying abroad is about becoming immersed in a culture through serving its people and relating to them in a way that tourists are not able to do. I was able to serve the citizens of Belize by taking care of their artifacts and history through the archaeological field school. This allowed me to form a deeper understanding and connection while abroad that would have not been possible if I had visited as a tourist. I explored Maya cities and the smaller fishing site of Marco Gonzalez. At each site, I learned about the archaeology of the areas from locals and students who had participated in the excavation or preservation of these sites which helped me to further my understanding of the Post-Classic Maya world. |
Leslie Siciliano: Oaxaca, Mexico: Here & There Oaxaca is rich of historic landscapes, art, culture, the people are so welcoming, the FOOD is amazing, and it gives students an opportunity to grow and increase their skills in speaking Spanish. Since students may live with host families, students can become more immersed in the language. Host families are so supportive and help you along the way as well. My all-time favorite experience in Mexico was being able to tour the Church of Santo Domingo. It was a self paced tour, the information that was provided with each artifact was very informational. There were so many favorite memories/moments, but another unforgettable memory was building a relationship with my host parents and eventually making a meal with my host mom. My roommate and I got to pick our favorite meal or salsa for our final night there and she guided us step by step on how to make the meal when we returned back home from our trip. |
Isaac Abelson: Costa Rica:Veritas University Studying abroad at Veritas University in Costa Rica allowed me to make lifelong connections and friends while simultaneously exploring a beautiful country. Discovering unique locations throughout my time in Costa Rica was extremely satisfying to me and those I became friends with. On the academic side, the courses provided different learning methods and hands-on experiences that are difficult to achieve at UNCW. One of the most enriching experiences was being integrated into an unfamiliar culture. A small private beach was my favorite place in Costa Rica. My friends and I hiked up steep hills and declines, climbed down a cliffside, and eventually made it to an extremely secluded cove where the waves were absolutely perfect. |
Laura Grossheim: *Voices of the Caribbean: Literature and Culture in Costa Rica - Short-Term Spring The country's unmatched biodiversity, from lush rainforests to pristine beaches, served as my classroom, instilling a profound appreciation for nature and the importance of conservation efforts. I engaged with the vibrant community through volunteering with organizations like El Puente and it provided me with meaningful connections and understanding of locals. Witnessing firsthand the interconnectedness between society and the environment inspired a deeper sense of responsibility and stewardship towards our planet. From savoring mouthwatering traditional dishes to rolling up our sleeves and diving into volunteer work, we saw the essence of the country. |
Elizabeth Seitz: Buenos Aires: Capital of Culture - Short-Term Spring The history and pride people have for the country is a truly special thing to experience. We stayed in the city surrounded by markets, restaurants, and parks all within walking distance. From art museums to horse ranches, there is so much to see and do in Argentina. At Don Silvano Estancia, a horse ranch, we saw all sorts of animals, rode horses, learned how to make empanadas, and tried some of the local cuisine like yerba mate tea and freshly grilled barbecue. All the locals were super helpful and willing to help us build our Spanish language knowledge and also share with us the culture of their beautiful country. |
Madi Nannery: Global UNI 101: Adventures in Costa Rica In my opinion, perspective is one of the most important aspects of life. It can affect your daily mindset, relationships, and life skills. There is a contagious happiness in the laid-back lifestyle that leaves all visitors with more peace than they came with. |
Sofia Stallard: Veritas University: Costa Rica - Spring I experienced one of the most biodiverse nations on the planet. From its incredible beaches and rainforests to the cities, Costa Rica serves as a unique place for exploring a number of subjects. There are lots of exciting outdoor activities like surfing and hiking. Additionally, the locals, especially your host family, create a perfect setting for strengthening Spanish language skills. I learned how to handle unfamiliar situations on my own, making me more confident and capable. I formed strong connections with my fellow study abroad students since we spent every weekend traveling and growing closer to each other. |
Grace Dolaher: Singapore: Nanyang Technological Univ. I loved being able to see what college life is like across the world. I was able to meet people from all over the world, experience things I would never have experienced in the States, and take classes I would never have taken anywhere else in the world. I met people from all over the world, not just South East Asia. So, not only did I learn about life in SEA, but I got to learn more about students from Australia, and Europe, and Canada too. I had the most amazing time abroad; meeting new people, going to new places, trying different food, and broadening my perspective of the world. |
Danica Galvin: Kansai Gaidai University: Japan – Spring Living independently, adapting to a new environment, creating travel itineraries, managing money, and problem solving in situations I've never encountered before were valuable life skills I learned from going abroad. However, the most enriching experience I had in Osaka was volunteering as a bartender at a local bar near the college to practice and learn the Japanese language like a native. I met many friends, and my language proficiency skyrocketed as I worked with the English and Japanese speaking staff and customers. I loved Osaka due to the contrast of the busy city with the beautiful nature and cultural history of Kyoto, the neighboring prefecture. |
Megan Harris: IBS Summer Japan & Korea Seminar The culture in Japan is so different from America and it captivated me instantly. The most enriching part for me was creating great friendships with people all over the country while learning about Japan together. My favorite experience was the Hanshin Tigers baseball game. This baseball game brought so many of us together and was a fantastic way to get a feel for Japanese culture. |
Lucas Bourne: FYSA in the UK Wales is a fantastic country that has beautiful and vast landscapes. The Welsh community is very welcoming and friendly, with a deep, enriching culture and history. During my time in Wales, I learned how to be more adaptable, adventurous, and independent. Some of my favorite parts of my trip were visiting the 12th century, Caernarfon Castle, other ruins, and waterfronts, along with making many friends local to the Wales area. |
Tesa Helenbrook: UK Wales: FYSA - Fall The First Year Spring Admitted students (FYSA) in the UK program broadened my horizons. The three months in Wales changed my outlook on life because of the incredible people that I met, the cultures I got to experience, and the classes I took. Regardless of where you go, there are tons of history surrounding you in Wales. Bangor University gave me the chance to meet an amazing group of people from all over the world who have become forever friends. My favorite place that I visited in Wales was Bryn Celli Ddu, “The Mound in the Dark Grove.” It’s a prehistoric mound located in Anglesey that is known for people performing rituals, paying their respects, and leaving peace offerings. It was an astonishing to be able to see things people have left throughout the thousands of years it has been there. |
Madeline Mueller: UK-Scotland: *Univ. of Aberdeen - Spring Scotland is bright, green, lively, and cultured. I believe all students should study abroad to experience new cultures firsthand. You meet amazing people, make friends and memories, and it's a great way to get out of your comfort zone. My entire study aboard experience was enriching, from the application phase to the last day of my trip. When I got to Scotland, I did not know a single person, so I had to make all new friends when I arrived. I pushed myself to reach out to people and attend random events at my host university. After COVID and yearning for new experiences and to meet new people, studying abroad helped me achieve both goals and exceed them. |
Samuel Draper: ISA Fall Internship in London, England England, specifically London, is incredibly diverse, easy to navigate, and a great place to immerse yourself in many different cultures. It was really enriching to intern at a prominent company in my industry and work with people from all over the world to achieve a similar goal. I learned so much about my industry, learned what it was like to live in one of the world's biggest cities, and was surrounded by intelligent and kind individuals in a place where I never fell short of finding something fun to do. My favorite experience was when the company I interned for, Raindance Film Festival, hosted their 10-day film festival in London. I met filmmakers that were premiering their films from all over the world and got to be a part of a very special moment in many of these young, diverse filmmakers' careers. |
Lea Askew: UK: University of Hertfordshire Studying abroad in England, just north of London, was unlike anything I have ever experienced. Being at such a diverse university is truly what made my semester so special. Meeting the most incredible people from all over the world, learning about their cultures and hearing each other's stories was my favorite part. Arriving was scary, not knowing anyone or how it would go was challenging, but it pushed me out of my comfort zone. I was able to easily travel to 4 other beautiful countries. This was the perfect place for me to network, learn about myself, study in new country, continue my goals of traveling and experiencing what life really is about. Visiting London for any occasion was my greatest experience as a student at my host university. Taking part in the most touristy activities, eating random street food from the vendors on every corner, and being present for the King Charles' coronation were all memories that will last a lifetime. |
Jackson Snyder: UK: *Univ. of Hertfordshire - Fall The UK is a great country for first-time travelers. I felt minimal culture shock, allowing for a smooth transition. The efficient public transportation in the UK allowed for easy travel from our host school to London. On the weekends, I was able to visit Amsterdam and Dublin. The best place was Chelsea, a beautiful and safe borough in London, with great shopping, food, and pubs. Soho, another borough, was very fun and vibrant, and is the "Times Square" of London. Most students in our abroad group traveled to at least one other country, due to the low cost of traveling. Engaging with a diverse array of individuals who share unique perspectives and experiences broadened my global understanding and educated me on cultures and beliefs. |
Emilia O’Neil: FYSA in the UK: A Fall Program for First Year Spring Admitted Students I traveled to see other cultures and to have worldly experiences. Snowdonia National Park surrounds Bangor, and it is filled with big, beautiful mountains and valleys. My friends and I took a bus one day to a random part of Snowdonia and discovered the most amazing view, a mountain surrounded lake with beautiful grass and stones around it. There are also four countries within the UK that are all amazing to see. They are just a train ride away, and since everything was so close, it did not cost much to travel around Europe. The UK would be perfect if you are looking for a place that is different enough to where you are experiencing new things, but not so different that it makes traveling difficult. |
Abbey Gooding: FYSA in the UK: A Fall Program for First Year Spring Admitted Students Bangor is amazing because of the location. It is located very close to Snowdonia National Park, which is absolutely breathtaking, a stunning place for hiking, and a short walk from the beach. Bangor also allows for easy travel around the UK, as well as other parts of Europe. In the first week, my friends and I decided to explore the town of Bangor, Wales and in doing so we found this beautiful place called Roman Camp. It is a hill only 10 minutes from campus, where you are able to see the most beautiful view of the town, including Snowdonia National Park, the Island of Anglesey, and the ocean. We ended up spending hours there and watched the sunset in awe of where we were. |
Kate Eagan: *Happiness Emphasis: Denmark - Short-Term Spring If I think there is one thing every student should do, it's studying abroad. You can gain a better understanding of other cultures and customs while broadening your experiences. My favorite experience in Denmark was going to a restaurant and sitting down enjoying food with locals, talking about their lives, and playing Mario cart. I learned a lot, had an amazing time, and made lifelong friends. |
Sarah Davis: France: *Summer on the Mediterranean Studying abroad is the best way to learn about the Earth, yourself, and other people. Studying in France introduced me to many incredible people and allowed me to flourish outside of my shell. I learned so much about other cultures that I now apply to my daily life. My favorite experience in Marseille was taking the ferry to visit Ile de Frioul, where we saw the ruins of fortresses and swam in a beautiful calanque. We explored the village, spoke with locals, and learned about the history of the ancient island. I had an incredible day taking in the views and exploring with new friends. |
Kate Eagan: Marseille, France: KEDGE Business School I studied abroad in Marseille, France at KEDGE Business School in the Fall of 2023. Studying abroad gave me amazing opportunities and experiences that I would have been unable to get anywhere else. Marseille is a busy city with a strong sense of pride. The people are unique, and the landscape is even more so. While abroad, I was able to explore Europe, visiting serval countries and cities, learning about new cultures, cuisines, and languages. I gained lifelong friends who are located all around the world, practiced my spoken French, and grew as an individual. Studying abroad is the most rewarding and unique experience a person can participate in. I encourage everyone to study abroad if given the chance and cannot speak highly enough of Marseille and all the beautiful city has to offer. |
Emma Bingaman: *Voices of the City: Paris, France – Short-Term Spring Studying abroad in France gave me an opportunity to learn about a new culture and I was able to practice ordering my meals in basic French. Interacting with servers, and enjoying the amazing food was an enlightening experience. The challenge of learning basic French, as a Spanish language speaker, boosted my confidence and sense of ability. This program also allowed me to connect with peers from UNCW and create amazing friendships. If you are considering study abroad, it will change your life. |
Oisin Slowey: IFE - The Strasbourg Field Study and Internship Program Studying abroad in France is an incredible opportunity to experience a drastically different culture and way of life to the United States. It is an opportunity to learn a new language and connect with people from other parts of the world. It is also a great chance to visit famous cities, historical sites and beautiful natural regions. My favorite experience in France was assimilating with the daily French lifestyle during my internship. This involved biking to work every day, becoming a regular at the local boulangerie and grocery store, as well as discussing daily events with my coworkers and friends that were native to France. |
Chris Day: Germany: *Business in Bremen - Summer If you are concerned about cost or not speaking the language of the country, you just need to buy everything at the right time, talk to others like me and in Northern Germany, everyone speaks great English. Germany has great food and beverages; I would suggest lunch or dinner at a Biergarten. Germany is also close to many interesting places to take by train, like Copenhagen or Amsterdam. My favorite part about Germany was being able to explore Bremen with friends and getting comfortable with knowing my way around the city and discovering more and more which was exciting. I want to visit more in south Germany, so I can't wait to go back! |
Eliana Pysz: Germany: *Business in Bremen - Summer I believe other students should consider studying abroad in Germany because of the beautiful sights and amazing culture! While abroad I was able to meet and spend time with German students and be immersed in their culture by living their lifestyle and eating their traditional foods. Every day was a new adventure and there was never a dull moment. My favorite experience from my trip to Germany was the day we all went sightseeing with some locals and saw some of the most incredible structures and we went paddle boarding down the Wesser River. All of us were able to spend bonding time together and do a really fun activity. |
Emily Martinez: Germany: *Business in Bremen - Summer If you are thinking of studying abroad, you should do it! It's an experience like no other. I got to explore Germany and experience life there as a student. Studying abroad gave me a different perspective on life. Just being there was my favorite experience. I loved that aside from being in Bremen we were able to travel to different cities. It was a new adventure every day, from taking a tour of Hamburg with our professors to going to Berlin with a friend to see the Berlin Wall Museum. Just seeing the view of Germany was beautiful and riding the trains was crazy. |
John Seay: Germany: *Invictus Games Germany is a vast and unique country, offering more than a handful of reasons to visit, travel through, or beyond. The country offers beautiful sites, a community that feels familiar, while still teaching you through experience the day to day life of another country, and a deep, historic significance wherever you look, from early human religious life to technological advancements. The old town in Dusseldorf is an area bustling with business and culture, and the perfect place to get a first hand, authentic look at day to day life. Seeing everyone coming and going, enjoying drinks, and making their way to work showed me a genuine look into Germany, and it taught me all I wanted to know and see about germen day to day life. |
Michael Olson: Poland: *Exploring Strategies for Cross-Cultural Innovation in Krakow- Short-Term Spring All the people I met in Poland, both students and professionals, enriched my learning experience and set me up for success after graduation. I went to Poland with the idea of never wanting to live in eastern Europe. Now, I am actively looking for careers in Poland and can't wait to go back. Poland is filled with historical sites and wonderful people. I had some of the best food I've ever eaten and visited some of the most historical places in eastern Europe such as; Auschwitz, Wawel Royal Castle, and Wieliczka salt mine. My favorite experience in Poland was attending the Soap! conference. I was able to meet professionals in my field from all over the world and gain more understanding of the culture and history of Poland. |
Sarra Richardson: Poland: *Exploring Strategies for Cross-Cultural Innovation in Krakow - Short-Term Spring Being a part of the study abroad community at UNCW was something that always interested me. When I decided to study in Poland, I originally had no idea what to expect because I hadn’t done a lot of research. When we arrived in Poland, I was absolutely shocked by the beauty of the landscape and architecture, the amazing diversity in food options, and the numbers of activities we were able to experience. With Poland being one of the locations of the world’s most gruesome crime, the Holocaust, we had an amazing opportunity to see the concentration camp Auschwitz during our stay. This experience helped me focus on how to make better choices for the future, so we do not repeat the past. |
Eleanor Berry: The Green Program: Iceland I completed a short term study abroad in Iceland with the Green Program. During my time there, we studied some of Iceland's renewable energy sources and experienced Iceland's incredible natural phenomena. Iceland is a great place for students looking to study green alternative energy solutions. We toured many academic establishments in Iceland, as well as many power plants. Along with studying, Iceland is a great place to get re-attuned to nature! In my experience, I was able to hike mountains and glaciers, swim in hot springs while it snowed, and camp under the aura borealis. We also got to meet many local Icelanders who were very excited and willing to share their culture with us! Iceland is a wonderful country to visit for the adventurous and the sustainable! My favorite part of the trip was getting to experience the beautiful nature of the country as well as explore the capital city. Specifically, I enjoyed the hot springs in the mountains. It was a very rejuvenating experience and afterwards I felt like I could survive anything. |
Sydney Mcgonigle: Italy: Fast & Slow - Short-Term Spring My trip to Italy was life changing in more ways than one. Being able to insert myself into a new culture was something that I will remember forever. I loved being able to go out with a new group of people and do new things together and make many new friends and great memories. This adventure was so out of my comfort zone, and it ended up being one of the best trips I've ever experienced. |
Ashley Caine: UNCW in Italy - Fall I think that other students should consider studying abroad in Italy because of the variety of cultures, landscapes, and experiences that the country can offer. While studying in Sorrento I was able to experience the laid-back, carefree lifestyle that is such a huge part of the Italian experience. I met some of the most amazing people and made life-long friendships. Along with the people and culture, I was also able to see some of the most breathtaking landscapes and beautiful natural areas in the world. My favorite place in Sorrento was the Marina Grande. My window in my dorm room overlooked the marina and I never got used to how breathtaking the view was. I would watch the sunset set over the sea there every day, go there to read or study, swam for the first time in the Mediterranean there, and would often go to the restaurants to enjoy dinner with friends. |
Katie Russo: AIFS Abroad in Florence: Global Education Center, Semester or Academic Year Students should study abroad because it allows you to view the world from another perspective. It teaches you so much outside of your traditional learning experience. You learn about a new culture in a way that a textbook could never teach you. It is truly lifechanging. Everyone always raves about the food in Italy and you can add me to the list! The best thing about Italy was the food. I encourage people to try new things, you may be surprised! |
Markus Hager: *UNCW in Italy - Fall Studying abroad in Sorrento, Italy rocks! Living in a new country isn't just about classes, it's a crash course in different cultures, languages, and different ways of living. It is an eye-opening and mind-expanding experience. I loved the food they had in Italy; it was the best I had ever had. I also enjoyed the fact that the beach was a 10 min walk from campus. My time studying abroad pushed me out of my comfort zone, made me adaptable, and gave me lots of cool stories to share. It's not just an academic adventure; it's a life-changer! |
Lily Bassett: ISA Florence, Italy: Business, Hospitality & Studio Art – Summer Studying abroad in Italy was the best experience I could have imagined. I spent time exploring Florence's museums, churches, and historic sites and I stayed with a host family with three little girls, truly immersing me in Italian culture. This trip was way out of my comfort zone, but my host family provided me with much-needed support. I was able to not only learn about the different customs of Italy, but I was exposed to how much I could push myself and adapt. I feel I changed drastically within only three weeks while abroad. |
Mary Carr: AIFS Abroad in Florence, Italy – Spring Studying abroad made me more independent, and I learned to trust myself while traveling in Florence, Italy. Being out of your comfort zone is important for personal growth and confidence. While taking a painting class I was able to focus on the finer details of the artwork and architecture of Italy, that I never would have appreciated, if I had not gone to Italy. One of my favorite places was the Piazzale Michelangelo in Florence, which has a beautiful view of the city. I loved meeting people from all walks of life & it opened my eyes to how much more to life there is. |
Alexis Dombrowski: *International Field Experience, Italy: Culturally Sustaining Education – Short-Term Spring Studying abroad was an amazing experience for learning about the elementary education system in another country. I visited a Montessori school in Perugia and learned about the history of Maria Montessori and her influence on the ways of conducting teaching in Italy. I was able to learn things I can bring into my own classroom to make learning meaningful and fun. I also learned a lot about myself and how I want my attitude and philosophy to be when teaching. |
Reilly Dunne: ISA Rome, Italy – Spring Going abroad gave me some of the most fulfilling and gratifying life experiences I could ask for. I explored the city with my professors as they taught us about Rome's past and the people living there. I spent a weekend traveling Sorrento and swimming in its Mediterranean beaches, Capri and petting its goats atop mountains, and Pompeii, learning its ancient history. I traveled all over Italy and Europe to countries like Iceland, Germany, Portugal, and Croatia, which enriched my knowledge of not only Italian culture but European culture as well. |
Elise Gould: UNCW in Italy – Spring I loved eating my favorite Italian dishes and trying new ones, meeting people from different backgrounds, and learning about the culture and traditions in Italy. My favorite thing was walking to this beautiful cove of rock formations directly on the ocean called Bagni Regina Giovanna. Many times my friends and I would pick up sandwiches from the local market and walk there, spending the day sunbathing, swimming, and enjoying the incredible view of the Mediterranean Sea. |
Christina Laieta: UNCW in Italy - Spring A piece of my heart is still in Sorrento. It's hard to describe how incredible being abroad is, but I would absolutely love to share my experiences in order to motivate and excite students considering going abroad. While I was abroad, there were many instances where I was pushed extremely out of my comfort zone but they made me a stronger person. I am so happy to have new international friends, and it is so incredible to compare our cultures and share our life experiences. |
Ella Prial: ISA Florence, Italy - Spring Living in another country is not easy, but it is amazing and I would do it over again in a heartbeat if I could. Firenze will always have a place in my heart. It's the place I called home for 5 months, and I love it there. It's such a vibrant city, full of so much art, history and culture. I learned something new every day while I was there, met some of my best friends, and made some amazing memories. |
Alyssa Shockley: AIFS Abroad in Florence, Italy - Spring I had the most wonderful time living in Florence, Italy. This past semester, I traveled to 10 other countries and immersed myself in Italian culture, experiencing authentic Italian traditions, language, and lifestyle firsthand. Being away from home, I learned to navigate unfamiliar environments and solve problems on my own, which boosted my independence, self-confidence, and resilience. One of my favorite memories was celebrating a friend's birthday. We went to the Michelangelo steps; with a stunning view of the entire city, we watched the sunset and listened to a local street artist playing music while people around us were dancing and singing along. |
Morgan Karmanocky: *From Danger Zone to Blue Zone: Ikaria, Greece - Summer Students should study abroad because it exposes them to a whole different area of life. It’s amazing to meet a lot of different people from a completely different culture who speak a different language. It’s also very refreshing to unplug from the daily rush of American culture. My favorite thing about my trip abroad was the time I was able to spend outdoors hiking, learning about the land, and experiencing the different types of vegetation and wildlife. It made me grow my passion for Mother Nature! Ikaria, Greece also has some of the freshest food I’ve ever had. They really value the phrase from garden to table. I even got to take a cooking class where I picked the vegetables for my meal. |
Cayla Greer: ISA Athens, Greece: Business & Liberal Arts + Honors Courses - Summer In a different academic environment with unique learning styles, I developed new learning skills and gained a fresh perspective on education. The experience went beyond the classroom, offering insights into a new culture, language, and social norms. The enchanting landscapes of Greece added an extra layer to this extraordinary journey. I will never forget how beautiful Greece is and will forever be grateful for how my experience changed me for the better. My favorite place in Greece is the heart of Athens, Monastraki. There are so many people from different countries who are speaking different languages and discovering the city from their own perspectives. |
Kellsie Kurgat: American College of Thessaloniki - Spring Greece was an amazing destination abroad. The breathtaking views, unique culture, and endless list of famous landmarks the country has to offer made my experience a ten out of ten. The most memorable experience in Greece was definitely hiking Mt. Olympus. It was a 5 hour long hike, extremely difficult and mentally challenging, but I would do it again. |
Emily Wilkinson: Physical Activity and Wellness in the Blue Zone of Greece - Summer I think it is important for students of any year or major to have hands-on learning experiences outside of the classroom. Being able to see how living an active lifestyle from a young age helped the people of Ikaria, Greece live longer than most people in the world was very interesting to me. I found that the small things they do in their day-to-day lives are also simple changes that I could make in my own life to be able to live a healthier, happier, and longer life. If you are looking into studying abroad and have a passion for health, fitness, or even just love to meet kind new people, I highly suggest looking into a trip to Greece. The lifestyle in Greece is much different than the active or healthy lifestyles we see here in the U.S. By learning about their lifestyle, I believe it will help you gain a new viewpoint on health and how you treat your body. This trip changed how I take care of myself and the activities I choose to do in my day-to-day life, and I hope it could have the same positive effects on your life as well! |
Chloe Christman: AIFS Abroad in Athens, Greece – Summer Greece is such a breathtaking place. Being immersed in the Greek culture was the first time I experienced different customs, foods, traditions and social norms. I loved hearing about their life experiences, and it was amazing seeing how different it was from home in America. It's also where I met a lifelong friend who drove me around and showed me all her favorite local spots. I loved hanging out with her and I am so happy that I had such an amazing experience in Greece. |
Sarah Deming: *Physical Activity and Wellness in the Blue Zone of Greece – Summer A panigiri is a huge festival where all generations get together to dance, sing, eat and drink. When we arrived, we were welcomed with open arms by the Panigiri and taught the traditional dances. It was beautiful being able to connect with so many older adults that appeared to be healthier than older adults in the United States. I met so many amazing people who were eager to share their culture with us. Having experienced new people and places, I am now better equipped to serve others with respect and understanding. |
Megan Chard: ISA Salamanca, Spain: Spanish Language & Culture - Intensive Month Attending a university in Spain gives you the opportunity to meet many people from all over the world. The adaptability gained from your experiences abroad will aid your skills in whatever you want to achieve in life. Personally, learning a foreign language inside of my own country was difficult because it was not used in my daily life. After being immersed in the language and culture for even a short amount of time, my Spanish skills have greatly improved. I suggest studying abroad to anyone, you won't regret it! |
Creah O'Hara: AIFS Abroad in Barcelona UAB: Summer Studying abroad in Spain was the most fulfilling experience of my life. My host parents had fun helping me with the language over many meals together; it really felt like we were family. The food in Spain is delicious, the language is beautiful, the culture is enriching, and the experience is indescribable. Everywhere you walk you are surrounded by stunning architecture and lively citizens. There is never a boring moment whether it's going to flamingo shows or visiting local landmarks, you will always have something to do. |
Rainey Wallen: Discover History & Culture in the Spanish Empire Spain is the historical center for many global trades and ideas which can give one an understanding of the interconnectedness of everything in our world. What I found most enriching about my experience were the friends I made and trying new foods in all the amazing restaurants and cafes. Studying abroad in Spain offers so much history and culture that can be an enriching experience for any degree program. I think everyone should consider studying abroad in Spain. |
Madison Mclane: Spain: Valencia - Summer I chose to make the most of my time in Valencia, Spain and while the Spanish culture of the Siesta is infatuating, I took advantage of the midday freeze to shop till I dropped and sight-see. I took any chance that I could to walk or bike to school to experience my environment with every sense I could bolster. My favorite experience was being hosted by a Brazilian family during my time there. We had such rich conversations and got to experience so much more food and architecture that way. |
Victoria Castro: *Valencia, Spain – Summer Students should study abroad to see the world in a different way, it makes you more open to new ideas and seeing a different way of life than in just the US. I experienced a new culture, new people, new styles, new ideas, and a different language which is a very humbling experience. In Spain, the architecture is gorgeous and there are many famous sights to see such as La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona and festivals and traditions to take part in such as Las Fallas! Of course, the food is also amazing, Paella is a must-try! My favorite experience in Spain was going to my Spanish class and the teachers at the University of Valencia. It was cool to have a traditional experience on campus with a Spanish teacher where I learned a lot about their history, language, and culture in both inside and outside of the classroom. Spain an amazing county to visit! |
Kate Graybush: Spain: *UNCW in Barcelona - Spring I believe that students that study abroad in Spain will transform the way they see and experience life and how they view themselves. In Spain you are experiencing a new culture unlike the United States; the food culture, dance, religion, festivals, and so much more literally ignites a passion in your soul. While studying abroad, I developed some core beliefs about who I am and what I want to pursue in life. During my first solo trip while abroad, I traveled to Sevilla, Spain during Semana Santa (Holy Week) and was able to witness huge processions with more than 30,000 people in attendance. That mixed with the beautiful, colorful Moorish architecture and delicious, flavorful Mediterranean cuisine created an impactful memory I hope to always cherish. |
Daniel Cortazar: Spain: USAC Valencia – Summer Studying abroad gives you an easily accessible pathway to see the world and connect with new people and make new friends. You have the chance to broaden your horizon and bring back those cultural lessons to the US. Everyone I met overseas was ready to become a new friend and friendly. Studying abroad in Spain and not just traveling in the country, gave me the time to speak with professors that shared insights and perspectives on academia and world problems that you could not find in the United States. The experiences had in Spain left an everlasting impact on me. |
Sydney Waddell: Spain: AIFS Abroad in Seville- Spring Studying abroad in Spain was a life-changing experience for me! Spain has so much to offer students including amazing people, food, and beautiful historic places to see. I choose the city of Seville, Spain to experience life there for a semester. Seville and living there as a student were perfect for me because, it was just small enough that I was not overwhelmed by a new city, but I still got a feel for true life in Spain. While in Spain, I was exposed to the Cuisine of Spain and took a class on how to properly cook their foods! This was an amazing class that left me with knowledge of how to cook dishes such as gazpacho and croquetas. I am excited to share my insight with anyone who is interested in studying abroad or anyone who will listen! |
Jenna Denton: Spain: ISA Valencia: Business, Sciences & Liberal Arts - Fall Studying in Valencia, Spain was the best experience of my life. Not only is this city beautiful and rich in Spanish culture and history, it also is a hot spot for European students studying abroad. During my time abroad I was able to be immersed in Spanish culture while also befriending many people from various European countries and learning about their cultures - not just Spanish students! This diverse environment taught me so much and gave me a more worldly perspective on life. |
Victoria Gay: ISA Valencia, Spain: Health and Natural Sciences - Academic Year/Semester I was very lucky to meet so many new people from so many countries. Every day was a mystery so it was never boring. I would love to live in Europe and travel full-time one day because I learned how to travel independently, became the most social I have ever been, and became one with a new culture. One of my favorite memories was going to places I heard about as a kid and never in my wildest dreams thought I would end up there. At the end of the semester, friends from all over the USA came together and we went to Ibiza. It was such a bonding experience, especially with having so many of us there together. |
Katherine Leland: UNCW in Barcelona Barcelona is a huge city with a rich history and so many things to do. Staying in a city with the mountain and the beach so close was amazing, and Costa Brava was only a 2 hour train ride, perfect for day trips. There were people from all over the world visiting, and every night there was a new opportunity for me to meet people. I learned to be more independent and was able to practice another language. Studying abroad also helped me become more outgoing and provided international experience, which can be vital when I start my career. |
Ashlyn Mills: Summer in Spain While I explored many parts of Spain, my home was Santander, and I loved it. Santander has an enriching culture full of fun things to do such as going to the beaches, which are full of greenery and the water is always warm. I even got to live out my lifelong dream of surfing there! The neighboring towns offer experiences like kayaking down the Sella River or taking the teleférico up to the Picos de Europa mountain for breathtaking views of the mountains. |
Sophie Lesanek: International Student: Universidad de Sevilla From flamenco to tapas and tinto de verano, Sevilla, Spain is a magical place full of rich culture and traditions. I met many friends who are from Sevilla that taught me so much about their history, traditions, and daily customs. I got to experience and participate in two of their most important events of the year; Semana Santa and La Feria de aril. These are definitely some of my favorite memories abroad and lived up to the hype. |
Noel Ruiz-Santiago: *Valencia, Spain - Summer I It can be tricky being alone in a foreign country. If you are hesitant about studying abroad alone, this program allows you to kind of dip your toes in and learn whether you could ever go to a country by yourself. In this program, you always have help, and you don't have to go alone. I liked the fact that I was about 10 minutes away from everything. I also really enjoyed using the transportation because it was easy to use, and it was reliable. The zoo, aquarium, and park were amazing and beautiful. I would love to go back and see those parts again. |
Delaney Sauers: AIFS Abroad in Seville, Spain - Spring I lived right outside of the "fair grounds" and saw, throughout my semester there, the portada being constructed and all of the casetas, or "little houses" being built. I liked walking around the Triana neighborhood, through their food market, where I took a cooking class one evening, and seeing all the different seafood, fruits, and meats they had on display. During Feria, I got to experience the authentic sevilla feria experience when I met my host grandfather. He let my friends and I into his caseta, where we listened to sevillanas music, enjoyed the cuisine, watched the dancing, and listened to everyone speaking in Spanish. |
Jordan Lamoreux: Australia: January Down Under- Short-Term Spring I believe that other students should study abroad in Australia if they have the opportunity to do so because it truly is an experience like no other. Australia is so diverse and unlike any other country I have ever visited. There are so many different cultures and places to explore, not to mention the food is out of this world. Since Australia is part of the Asia-Pacific region, I learned so much more about not only Australia itself, but also about Asian-Pacific culture. My favorite experience in Australia was taking day trips to the beaches! The water was insanely clear and beautiful, and using public transportation to get there was super easy. Exploring different areas with my peers are some of my favorite memories from studying abroad! |
Avry Regan: Australia: James Cook University - Spring |
Brooke Beal: Australia: AIFS Abroad in Perth |
Courtney Wilson: Semester at Sea Through Semester at Sea, you develop a better intercultural identity while traveling to ten different countries and having personal experiences with the cultures you visit. My favorite aspect about Semester at Sea, was that our shipboard community became close and we cared about one another like a family, our Academic Dean knew the name of every student and faculty on board, despite that there was over 600 of us. My favorite experience in country was in India when I met, Mahz, a student from St. Theresa's College. We met at a welcome reception through Semester at Sea on the first day at port; where she taught me about her culture and in return, I shared a bit about mine. |
