Africa
Isabelle Fogleman: South Africa: AIFS Abroad in Stellenbosch- Spring South Africa has deep history and culture, and the people are warm and welcoming. South Africa is also a great place for adventures such as hiking, surfing, or working with animals like penguins and elephants, but it also has a very tumultuous history surrounding Apartheid. I worked with the Iliso Care Society, an organization that provides education to young students and food for the needy where I learned more about social justice initiatives and a deeper understanding of race and culture. Studying abroad teaches independence and growth, as well as immerses you into a beautiful country and culture that you may have never experienced before. |
Sarah Foster: North Africa: *Summer in Morocco - Summer Studying Abroad allowed me to not only learn about a new culture, but completely immerse myself in Morocco. This country has the kindest people, the most beautiful landscapes, and food that will never be matched! I even enjoyed a camel ride in the Sahara Desert. In the five weeks, I was abroad, I felt I had learned more than I had in a semester. All aspects of my life were touched positively by my decision to study abroad, and my heart will forever belong to Morocco. |

Americas
Sofia Stallard: Veritas University: Costa Rica - Spring I experienced one of the most biodiverse nations on the planet. From its incredible beaches and rainforests to the cities, Costa Rica serves as a unique place for exploring a number of subjects. There are lots of exciting outdoor activities like surfing and hiking. Additionally, the locals, especially your host family, create a perfect setting for strengthening Spanish language skills. I learned how to handle unfamiliar situations on my own, making me more confident and capable. I formed strong connections with my fellow study abroad students since we spent every weekend traveling and growing closer to each other. |
Jamia Walden: Veritas University: Costa Rica - Spring I studied abroad for two semesters in different countries. I studied in both Spain and Costa Rica. I intentionally chose Spanish speaking countries because I want to improve my proficiency in the language. However, my journey brought me more opportunities and growth than I ever could have predicted. While each was vastly different, they both gave me the opportunity to travel, formulate bonds, and immerse myself in another culture. Although it may seem cliché, I truly believe the best part of my time abroad were the people I met along the way. Everyone from my host family, to other students at school, to the locals I interacted with by chance all influenced my perspective of the world. The lessons I learned from being abroad about our interdependence as a global society go far beyond what could ever be taught in a classroom. |
Lillie Lawrence - Veritas University: Costa Rica - Fall Studying abroad in Costa Rica completely changed my life. Being surrounded by lush forests and vibrant wildlife, I learned what it truly means to live sustainably. We worked on farms, volunteered with local communities, and saw firsthand how people from all walks of life come together for one greater good—the environment. My favorite place was Monteverde, with its magical cloud forests teeming with life. Walking through the canopy surrounded by howler monkeys and birds reminded me of the beauty we’re fighting to protect. Studying abroad in Costa Rica gave me perspective, passion, and the belief that small efforts, like those we took part in, can truly make a difference. It wasn’t just a trip—it was a journey that helped me find my purpose and a deeper love for our planet. |
Rachel Labori: *Oaxaca, Mexico: Here and There - Short-Term Spring Oaxaca, Mexico is a beautiful place filled with art, culture, and landscapes that are unforgettable. The two-week summer trip was filled with excursions and tours to see things like pyramids and waterfalls, and to deeply understand the rich history of the place and the people. My host family welcomed me with love and the community is patient and friendly. It was truly an amazing experience to fully immerse myself in another culture and improve my communication skills in Spanish. If I had the opportunity, I would go back to Oaxaca in a heartbeat. |
Leslie Siciliano: *Oaxaca, Mexico: Here & There - Short-Term Spring Oaxaca is rich of historic landscapes, art, culture, the people are so welcoming, the FOOD is amazing, and it gives students an opportunity to grow and increase their skills in speaking Spanish. Since students may live with host families, students can become more immersed in the language. Host families are so supportive and help you along the way as well. My all-time favorite experience in Mexico was being able to tour the Church of Santo Domingo. It was a self paced tour, the information that was provided with each artifact was very informational. There were so many favorite memories/moments, but another unforgettable memory was building a relationship with my host parents and eventually making a meal with my host mom. My roommate and I got to pick our favorite meal or salsa for our final night there and she guided us step by step on how to make the meal when we returned back home from our trip. |
Ines Melin: *Oaxaca, Mexico: Here & There - Short-Term Spring I studied abroad in Oaxaca, Mexico, a beautiful place full of vibrant culture, rich history, and delicious food, it was unforgettable. It was an amazing way to expand my Spanish-speaking skills while exploring the culture. From visiting the Zapotec ruins at Monte Albán to learning to cook traditional Oaxacan foods, every day was an adventure. I saw four women entrepreneurs in Teotitlán del Valle creating artisanal goods, I witnessed a calendas, which are traditional, festive parades to celebrate religious or cultural events, like weddings or special events. Participants dance in colorful costumes and music is played by a local band. Staying with a host family allowed us to feel more connected to the friendly community. I loved every moment of this trip and it has deepened my cultural understanding and broadened my global perspective. |
Parry Jackson: *Belize Archaeology Field School - Summer While staying in San Pedro, Belize I became close friends with the locals and went to local events. Many locals wanted to show us what their city was really like and we ended up doing the most amazing things. We went on a chartered boat and swam with sharks, went cave diving with Maya artifacts, to the local school and met the kids who lived on the island, to the local high school's prom and so many more things that would never have been possible without connecting with the locals. This experience taught me how to be compassionate, patient, and far more understanding to those around me. |
Allison Scoda: *Belize Archaeology Field School - Summer To me, studying abroad is about becoming immersed in a culture through serving its people and relating to them in a way that tourists are not able to do. I was able to serve the citizens of Belize by taking care of their artifacts and history through the archaeological field school. This allowed me to form a deeper understanding and connection while abroad that would have not been possible if I had visited as a tourist. I explored Maya cities and the smaller fishing site of Marco Gonzalez. At each site, I learned about the archaeology of the areas from locals and students who had participated in the excavation or preservation of these sites which helped me to further my understanding of the Post-Classic Maya world. |
Shannon Cawley: *Physical Activity and Wellness in the Blue Zone of Costa Rica - Summer Costa Rica was transformative! The locals there were the friendliest people I have ever met and made the experience so lovely, as we were able to connect and they taught me a ton about Costa Rican culture. I loved the lush environment and wildlife there and speaking with the local vendors about their art and jewelry pieces. A memory that will stick with me forever was speaking with older folks at a senior center in Costa Rica. They were so thankful to have us there and shared wise words about how to live a happy life. We warmed up to each other quickly and had an impromptu dance session where I was blown away by the agility of people over 100 years old. It was incredible. |
Molly McMorrow: *Physical Activity and Wellness in the Blue Zone of Costa Rica - Summer Costa Rica is home to one of the few blue zones in the entire world, a place where people tend to live significantly longer than those elsewhere. I learned much from the activities, habits, and lifestyles of the people living there because I was fully immersed in the culture and was living the lifestyle. A dance party with the members of a senior center was my favorite activity. My group and I taught some of the oldest people in the world classic dances such as the cupid shuffle and the YMCA, and they were fully able to participate due to their incredible health. Getting to participate in and practice the activities as well as having conversations with people who have done this their whole life left a much greater impact on me than a classroom would have. |
Anna Darlington: *Physical Activity and Wellness in the Blue Zone of Costa Rica - Summer Studying Abroad in Costa Rica's Blue Zone is the most incredible thing I have ever done. We traveled throughout the country, and I learned so much from the people there who taught us how to cook and take care of animals. My favorite meal was while visiting a pottery maker, Junior, whose wife prepared soup for all of us. Although the weather was extremely hot, the soup was phenomenal, and was our first experience of an authentic Costa Rican meal. My favorite part of the trip was staying with our host family, who I still talk to almost a year later. I'm so grateful for having the opportunity to attend this trip and would go back at the next chance! |
Elizabeth Seitz: *Buenos Aires: Capital of Culture - Short-Term Spring The history and pride people have for the country is a truly special thing to experience. We stayed in the city surrounded by markets, restaurants, and parks all within walking distance. From art museums to horse ranches, there is so much to see and do in Argentina. At Don Silvano Estancia, a horse ranch, we saw all sorts of animals, rode horses, learned how to make empanadas, and tried some of the local cuisine like yerba mate tea and freshly grilled barbecue. All the locals were super helpful and willing to help us build our Spanish language knowledge and also share with us the culture of their beautiful country. |
Abby Donatelle: *Buenos Aires: Capital of Culture - Short-Term Spring I am a Spanish major with a concentration in teaching and a minor in international studies so for me, I knew I wanted to travel to a country that spoke Spanish and Buenos Aires seemed like the perfect place for me! I couldn't have asked for a better experience, I spent my visiting various museums and historical landmarks and had an oppourtunity to ride a horse through the country side of Argentina. My favorite part of studying abroad in Buenos Aires was the culture! We learned to dance the traditional tango, we got to try yerba mate which is a very popular drink in many parts of South America, and I practice my Spanish skills to talk to the locals. This experience truly changed my point of view of life and further developed my love for travel. |
Bridget Reeves: *Buenos Aires: Capital of Culture - Short-Term Spring Buenos Aires has a vibrant culture, rich history, and dynamic atmosphere. The city is renowned for its European-influenced architecture, through the roof food, and passionate tango, offering a unique blend of tradition and modernity. Buenos Aires provided a comforting environment to fully immerse myself in Spanish language studies while experiencing daily life in a big city. From exploring historic neighborhoods like La Boca to participating in various local festivals and markets, I gained a deeper understanding of Argentine culture and customs. The city's extensive public transportation system and walkable streets made it easy to explore and connect with locals. Watching the gauchos' profound bond to their horses and ranch during our visit to the Don Silvano ranch was awe-inspiring, showcasing a unique blend of tradition, skill, and deep connection to their heritage. This immersive experience profoundly deepened my appreciation for Argentine culture and the gauchos' way of life. |
Jessica Hampton: *Global UNI 101: Explorations in Costa Rica – Short-Term Fall The geographical and natural wonders of Costa Rica allow students the opportunity to try things such as ziplining, snorkeling, white water tubing, horseback riding, and many other amazing experiences that they may not get to do at home. The most enriching part of my study abroad experience was being able to visit a family who taught my class how to make tortillas and pottery from hand. Costa Rica held a simplistic and natural beauty that is becoming so rare to find other places in the world. My favorite experience in Costa Rica was hiking the Ricon de la Vieja National Park, and being able to see the boiling mud pits, natural hot springs, and the abundance of wildlife such as several species of monkeys, toucans, and various plants. After the tour of the mountain, we got to hike down to a waterfall and jump into the ice-cold water. It was so surreal and beautiful to see the vastly different forms of natural wonders this single park had to offer. |
Aveline Patrolia: *Global UNI 101: Explorations in Costa Rica – Short Term Fall My experience in Guanacaste, Costa Rica will forever stick with me, along with my new lifelong friendships. There was so much the land had to offer, and I found myself in awe of the beautiful landscapes and the variety of landscapes that it had to offer. The most surreal moment for me was after a hike up El Rincon de la Vieja, when we went to swinging steps to swim in a crystal clear waterfall. My friends and I dove down and could see each other with perfect vision. The sun shone through to the bottom of the pool, there were monkeys and the most beautiful birds I'd ever seen in person. The most fantastic experience for me was meeting a lovely Costa Rican family that made their living selling pottery and collecting clay. They allowed us into their homes to see the way they lived with their family, and even helped us make tortillas and lunch from scratch. |
Paige Chance: *Global UNI 101: Explorations in Costa Rica – Short Term Fall Traveling has always been a huge part of my life. Each time I visit a new country, the most enriching part is experiencing a new culture and getting to connect with the people. This was absolutely a valuable part of both of my study abroad trips! However, I didn't expect to also become really close friends with the people I went with. I shared experiences with students just like me and they provided comfort, support, and laughter throughout my entire trip! My favorite place in Costa Rica was probably Rincon De La Vieja. We spent three days here where we hiked a gorgeous trail through their national park, swam in the Oropendola Waterfall, and took mud baths in volcanic clay. I also got to experience zip-lining for the first time which was absolutely terrifying but it felt amazing to step out of my comfort zone with friends! |
Alexa Anne Bishop: *Global UNI 101- Adventures in Costa Rica - Short-Term Fall For my first study abroad experience, I decided to do a short-term study abroad program with my freshman UNI class to Costa Rica. The most enriching part of this experience for me was ziplining nearly 700 feet in the air through the mountains of Costa Rica. Though I could barely breathe as I flew down, the picturesque view before me was utterly breathtaking and incomparable. UNCW's study abroad program gave me this; the opportunity to do something I otherwise never would've had access to. |
Sarah Kelly: *Global UNI 101- Adventures in Costa Rica - Short-Term Fall When I visited Costa Rica over winter break this past semester, I got to experience the natural beauty of the country and indulge in some of the country's agricultural specialties during both a chocolate and a coffee tour. My experience, specifically, was so enriching because I had never been out of the country, and we got to do so much in a short amount of time, including salsa dancing, tree climbing, and tasting authentic Costa Rican cuisine. My favorite experience, though, had to be the zip lining over the mountains and rainforest of San Carlos. It was like nothing I've ever experienced. |
Peyton Purvis: *Global UNI 101- Adventures in Costa Rica - Short-Term Fall Studying abroad in Costa Rica was a life-changing adventure that I know I will tell my children about someday. I immersed myself in the culture, experienced a new language (Spanish), and explored picturesque landforms. The trip was packed with activities I will remember forever. I loved sitting in the hot springs, trying unique fruits, and zip-lining through the rainforest. One of the highlights was spotting a kinkajou on a night hike. I was in awe of this new wildlife. Zip-lining was 100% my favorite experience. I am thrilled to say I conquered my fear of heights! |
Maddie O’Shea: *Global UNI 101- Adventures in Costa Rica - Short-Term Fall I chose to study abroad in Costa Rica because of the beautiful natural environment and the opportunity to immerse myself in the culture. One of my favorite places that I visited during my time there was the Arenal Volcano 1968 Hiking Trail, formed naturally by the 1968 Arenal Volcanic eruption. During the hike, you can see all of the beautiful views of the Arenal Volcano and the mountains. I also became friends with my bus driver, Johnathan, a local who lives in San José. He knew a lot of hidden gems and interesting facts about the country, and additionally, he is bilingual, so I would try to converse in Spanish with him, which helped me understand the language and culture even more. |
Christian Wilson: *Global UNI 101- Adventures in Costa Rica - Short-Term Fall Costa Rica is home to diverse plants and wildlife, making the scenery breathtaking and extremely unique. One of our hotels in the program was in the clouds, and when the clouds cleared it gave us stunning views of the surrounding mountains and Lake Arenal. One of my favorite memories was zip lining over the cloud forest and eating fresh fruits across the country. From swimming in a river on the first day to almost climbing up the inside of a tree, each adventure encouraged me to embrace expanding my horizons and helped me develop into a more adventurous and open-minded individual. |
Kaylise Buckner: *Global UNI 101- Adventures in Costa Rica - Short-Term Fall I chose a short-term trip to Costa Rica with my UNI 101 class because I knew it would cultivate lasting friendships and help me connect with people my freshman year. All of the experiences were so much fun, but my favorite was our trip to a local Women's Co-op. Hearing the story of how it came to be, and the cultural importance was eye-opening. My short time abroad pushed me beyond my comfort zone, taught me the power of adaptability, and inspired me to become a more engaged global citizen. |
Sydney Ross: *Global UNI 101- Adventures in Costa Rica - Short-Term Fall Studying abroad in Costa Rica is one of the best decisions I have ever made. Costa Rica is filled with beautiful scenery, a plenitude of fresh fruits, and wildlife you will not be able to see in America. While abroad, I had the privilege to zip line, raft down the Sarapiqui River, take Latin dancing classes, hike near a volcano, and try Costa Rican coffee and chocolate. Another experience I will never forget is seeing a mother and baby sloth in a tree. I will forever be grateful for the memories and friendships I gained through this program! |
Madi Nannery: *Global UNI 101: Explorations in Costa Rica – Short Term Fall In my opinion, perspective is one of the most important aspects of life. It can affect your daily mindset, relationships, and life skills. Studying abroad truly allows you to deepen your perspective in the most authentic way. You get to physically live in the life of others and see the world in a way you have never viewed it before. It is the most valuable form of hands-on learning and an opportunity I think every student should take. Pura Vida is a phrase that Costa Rica lives by, meaning pure life. The simple and gracious way of living is something that positively impacts all that visit. There is a contagious happiness in the laid-back lifestyle that leaves all visitors with more peace than they came with. |

Asia
Lydia Mielke: USAC Korea: Seoul - Undergraduate Studies (Korea University) - Summer I had such an enriching time in Seoul at Korea University. I chose Korea so I could experience a completely new culture and interact with people from different walks of life. I gained a better sense of independence and a clearer understanding of a country I never would have known much about. Every day I passed traditional-style buildings right between modern ones. Each night I was able to eat at a new restaurant and try new foods, Seoul was the perfect hub for my adventurous taste buds. My favorite food was Gukbap, said to originate in Busan where I spent a weekend thanks to Korea's easy to navigate train system. I tailored my time in Korea with the perfect mix of class and exploration, Seoul is full of so many experiences it was hard to be bored. Shopping and café hopping took up a lot of my. Everyone was kind and welcoming even though I mostly needed to use a translation app. In the end, the hardest part of my study abroad was having to go home. |
Megan Harris: IBS Summer Japan & Korea Seminar The culture in Japan is so different from America and it captivated me instantly. The most enriching part for me was creating great friendships with people all over the country while learning about Japan together. My favorite experience was the Hanshin Tigers baseball game. This baseball game brought so many of us together and was a fantastic way to get a feel for Japanese culture. |
Molly Melito: *Buddhism and Sustainability in Thailand - Short-Term Spring Studying abroad in Thailand allowed me to experience an entirely new culture and immerse myself in a place that offered many opportunitys for personal growth. I learned to accept and adapt in difficult situations, become a better problem solver, and stay calm under stress. Traveling to Thailand was definantly outside my comfort zone, but it allowed me to discover Asia's culture, beauty, and diversity, which I could never experience elsewhere. My favorite activity was visiting the Elephant Sanctuary, where we fed, washed, and swam with elephants. This trip broadened my horizons and helped me appreciate the differences and similarities between people worldwide. |

Europe
UK & Ireland
Jackson Snyder: UK: University of Hertfordshire - Fall |
Pauline Castro: Maynooth University - Fall Studying abroad in Ireland introduced me to a vibrant culture and breathtaking landscapes. Maynooth is a smaller school, like UNCW, which is something I valued as I enjoyed having smaller class sizes and easy communication with professors. Ireland is also small, relative to the U.S., so it is easy to travel and see the beautiful landscapes and towns. Navigating a new country alone built my sense of independence and confidence. From going to class to seeing old castle ruins, this journey allowed me to gain new knowledge in the classroom, travel to the most amazing places, and expand my perspective globally. |
Jamison Painter: University of Galway (Ollscoil na Gaillimhe) - Fall Studying abroad in Ireland was one of the best experiences of my life. Through my housing and joining clubs, I met Irish students and other international students from different European countries. One of the highlights of my time abroad was when my friends and I hosted Thanksgiving for our non-American friends. We spent all day making traditional American Thanksgiving food, and everyone else brought traditional dishes from their country. It was a great way for all of us to come together and share parts of our cultures, and to celebrate an amazing semester and all the memories we had the privilege of experiencing together. I loved my time in Ireland, and I would not trade it for the world. |
Tabitha Ormond: University of Galway - Ecology: Living Landscapes in the West of Ireland - Summer Before finding the program I chose, I had long debated if and where I should study abroad. Finding a program that taught ecology through outdoor excursions was the perfect sign that I needed to go to Ireland. Since I am passionate about ecology, the program was what sold me on this study abroad more so than the country, but I ended up falling in love with Ireland along the way. I enjoyed learning about the environment of Ireland through my class as well as learning about the culture along the way. My favorite part of Ireland is the way their culture is shaped by music. Musicians there line the streets, playing music that honors both the country’s past and present. I had the opportunity to see a traditional music and Irish dancing show while abroad, and it was incredible to see the way the artists had devoted their lives to an artform that kept their heritage alive. The beautiful music and culture of Ireland gave the country a liveliness that I greatly miss since returning home. |
Annie Taylor: AIFS Summer Internship in Galway, Ireland The reason I decided to study abroad in Galway Ireland was because of the rich culture that surrounds the city. Galway is known and the cultural hub of Ireland and it truly is, everyone I met was wonderful and the Irish were always more than happy to show you around the city and teach you a little history lesson. During my time there I participated in and internship with a domestic abuse refuge where I was helping clients from all different walks of life. I learned a lot about the traveling community in Ireland and the hardships they have had over the years, along with how Ireland is occupied by a large immigrant population. I was able to learn all of this throughout my internship and understand the differences between Ireland and the U.S. Understanding the cultural values while in a different place is highly important and a great way to learn more. Dress, religion, and food are some examples that are easily seen in Ireland so if you ever get the chance try the fish and chips! |
Megan Burleson: University of Stirling - International Summer School I studied abroad in Stirling, Scotland for eight weeks this past summer and it was a great experience. I chose to study abroad in Scotland because I was looking for a country with the primary language of English while still wanting to experience a different culture. Stirling was the perfect city too because it was small enough to be able to easily navigate with great public transportation options while still being within an hour train ride of bigger cities like Edinburgh or Glasgow. The University of Stirling was also a great school with a more modern feel in a historic town. It was close enough to international airports in Glasgow and Edinburgh so it was easy to take weekend trips to other cities in the UK and beyond in Europe. My favorite experiences would be the trips and excursions the school would plan for the weekends or on days we didn't have class. I also loved getting to meet the other people in the program and I can now say that I have friends all across the country. |
Lucas Bourne: FYSA in the UK: A Fall Program for First Year Spring Admitted Students Wales is a fantastic country that has beautiful and vast landscapes. The Welsh community is very welcoming and friendly, with a deep, enriching culture and history. During my time in Wales, I learned how to be more adaptable, adventurous, and independent. Some of my favorite parts of my trip were visiting the 12th century, Caernarfon Castle, other ruins, and waterfronts, along with making many friends local to the Wales area. |
Tesa Helenbrook: FYSA in the UK: A Fall Program for First Year Spring Admitted Students The First Year Spring Admitted students (FYSA) in the UK program broadened my horizons. The three months in Wales changed my outlook on life because of the incredible people that I met, the cultures I got to experience, and the classes I took. Regardless of where you go, there are tons of history surrounding you in Wales. Bangor University gave me the chance to meet an amazing group of people from all over the world who have become forever friends. My favorite place that I visited in Wales was Bryn Celli Ddu, “The Mound in the Dark Grove.” It’s a prehistoric mound located in Anglesey that is known for people performing rituals, paying their respects, and leaving peace offerings. It was an astonishing to be able to see things people have left throughout the thousands of years it has been there. |
Emilia O’Neil: FYSA in the UK: A Fall Program for First Year Spring Admitted Students I traveled to see other cultures and to have worldly experiences. Snowdonia National Park surrounds Bangor, and it is filled with big, beautiful mountains and valleys. My friends and I took a bus one day to a random part of Snowdonia and discovered the most amazing view, a mountain surrounded lake with beautiful grass and stones around it. There are also four countries within the UK that are all amazing to see. They are just a train ride away, and since everything was so close, it did not cost much to travel around Europe. The UK would be perfect if you are looking for a place that is different enough to where you are experiencing new things, but not so different that it makes traveling difficult. |
Abbey Gooding: FYSA in the UK: A Fall Program for First Year Spring Admitted Students Bangor is amazing because of the location. It is located very close to Snowdonia National Park, which is absolutely breathtaking, a stunning place for hiking, and a short walk from the beach. Bangor also allows for easy travel around the UK, as well as other parts of Europe. In the first week, my friends and I decided to explore the town of Bangor, Wales and in doing so we found this beautiful place called Roman Camp. It is a hill only 10 minutes from campus, where you are able to see the most beautiful view of the town, including Snowdonia National Park, the Island of Anglesey, and the ocean. We ended up spending hours there and watched the sunset in awe of where we were. |

Denmark
Kate Eagan: *Happiness Emphasis: Denmark - Short-Term Spring If I think there is one thing every student should do, it's studying abroad. You can gain a better understanding of other cultures and customs while broadening your experiences. My favorite experience in Denmark was going to a restaurant and sitting down enjoying food with locals, talking about their lives, and playing Mario cart. I learned a lot, had an amazing time, and made lifelong friends. |

Finland
Lindy Langdon: University of Oulu - Fall I decided to study abroad in Finland because I'm an anthropology and environmental science student interested in how traditional knowledge can be utilized in climate change mitigation, particularly in the Arctic. The University of Oulu is not only located just outside of the Arctic Circle, but offers an expansive selection of anthropology, environmental, and even environmental anthropology courses. I skated on (natural) frozen lakes with friends, witnessed the Northern Lights, and even got to hang out with reindeer! Finnish traditions, like sitsits, introduced me to another lively side of introverted Finnish culture, so making friends was easy. Through the university's travel program, I hiked the Lofoten Islands and visited Inari, where I learned about Sámi culture and reindeer herding firsthand. The University of Oulu’s supportive academic environment inspired me so much that I’m now planning to return for graduate studies. |

Croatia
Rachael Tydings: *Exploring Food & Culture in Croatia - Short-Term Spring I have always wanted to travel, however, I am solely responsible for funding my education. The study abroad program I chose was Exploring Food and Culture in Croatia. Some reasons I chose this specific program was the affordability and length of time. Short-term study abroad opportunities tend to be more affordable than long-term study abroad opportunities. In addition to this, the program I chose was faculty led, which allowed me to study abroad with faculty I trusted. Before this study abroad experience, I had never traveled outside of the US. I was equally excited and terrified to embark on this adventure. The short-term study abroad opportunity allowed me to travel, without committing to an full semester outside of the country. The most enriching part of studying abroad was interacting with locals and hearing some of the stories our tour guides told. Hearing about the way they live and grew up was unlike anything I have heard before. |

France
Sarah Davis: France: *Summer on the Mediterranean Studying abroad is the best way to learn about the Earth, yourself, and other people. Studying in France introduced me to many incredible people and allowed me to flourish outside of my shell. I learned so much about other cultures that I now apply to my daily life. My favorite experience in Marseille was taking the ferry to visit Ile de Frioul, where we saw the ruins of fortresses and swam in a beautiful calanque. We explored the village, spoke with locals, and learned about the history of the ancient island. I had an incredible day taking in the views and exploring with new friends. |
Michelle Ramon: France: *Summer on the Mediterranean If you have the chance to study abroad, I would encourage you to seize the moment and take the opportunity to do so. Choosing to study abroad was one of the best decisions I have made during my college experience, enriching both my professional and personal aspirations. I traveled to Marseille, France, which was the perfect destination for me to try new foods, meet new people, broaden my understanding of the business world and embrace diverse cultures. I learned a lot about myself and gained valuable skills that I now apply to my daily life. My favorite memory was hiking the Calanques Sugiton with a group of my newfound friends, followed by a swim in the Mediterranean Sea after school orientation during the first week we arrived. This beautiful adventure helped me bond with fellow students and appreciate Marseille’s stunning geography.

Lillie Swindle: The NC Consortium Program (NC in Paris) - Fall I decided to study in Paris, France with NC in Paris to enrich my academic and life experience. Through this program I was introduced and immersed into a new world of culture, which allowed for me to develop my sense of self and opinions on global issues. In addition, my French language skills developed exponentially. My favorite experience in Paris was watching a ballet at the Opera Garnier. I was fortunate to travel a good amount during my trip. I went to cities in France including Montpellier, Nice, and Strasbourg, as well as countries including Ireland, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. My experiences with NC in Paris have forever shaped me to be an independent, resilient person with a love for travel and experiencing new cultures. |
Isadora Ambrosio: USAC France: Pau - French Language and European Studies - Fall I studied in Pau, France, a small town with a beautiful downtown area, so much history, and incredible architecture. I met so many like-minded people, from all over the world who love the French language and culture like me, which was so motivating. This experience was life-changing, the food was amazing, and the architecture and landscapes seemed like they were straight out of a postcard. However, it was the interactions I had with French people and meeting others abroad that will truly stick with me. It is safe to say I made some life-long friendships on this trip, and I couldn't recommend it to others more. |
Zofia Zambrano: USAC France: Pau - French Language and European Studies - Summer I originally intended on studying abroad in Morocco through a faculty led program led by my French professor. However the program fell through and I was unable to go to Morocco. My French professor insisted that I still go abroad for the summer and she found me a program in Pau, France. Pau is a small city in the south-west of France, located just along the boarder of the Pyrenees. I was happy to be in France, however when I imagined myself in France, I had imagined myself in Paris. Pau was 100x better. Given the city's smaller size I was able to practice my French more often and with less pressure. The locals were always appreciative of your effort to learn French and always willing to practice speaking with you. I was able to establish relationships with locals as well as with my host mother. My favorite place was the Gave de Pau, a river that runs through Pau with a beautiful view of the Chateau de Pau. The source of the river is water from the Pyrenees but from the Spanish region. |
Joliana Favale: ISA Paris, France: Intensive French Language Institut Catholique de Paris - Summer I chose to study abroad in Paris, France because I wanted to be in a location where I could be immersed in French culture and language. I had so many wonderful experiences with excursions and ate so much delicious food. If I had to choose, duck confit was probably my favorite authentic French dish. I loved all the places I went to, especially Mont Saint-Michele and Deauville, Normandie in the north of France. Studying in Paris helped me to gain a better understanding of the French people and culture, as well as challenging myself to step out of my comfort zone and grow in many ways! |
Ian Dozier: ISA Paris, France: Intensive French Language Institut Catholique de Paris - Fall I studied in France because I'm getting a French minor. I chose L'Institut Catholique de Paris because they offered a summer language intensive program. Participating in that program not only helped my grammar, but also my confidence in speaking French. The people in Paris are extremely nice and I met lots of students from different schools and programs. I saw the Eiffel Tower up close and stood under it at night with all the lights, the experience was nothing short of amazing. I visited the Arc du Triomphe, Versaille, saw the beautiful art of the Sacré Coeur, visited countless bakeries and French pastries to die for. I was able to communicate with Parisiens and have decent conversations; even giving directions on where to go. If you go to France, you won't be disappointed. |
Caleb Herron: Campus International de Cannes - Extended Spring Semester I have always wanted to go abroad and study abroad was the best way for me to do it. As a language major, there is no better way to learn a language than to go to a country where that language is spoken. That is why I chose to study abroad in France. Being immersed like that was my favorite part, alongside working and being involved in the Cannes Film Festival. Studying abroad allowed me to truly immerse myself in another culture & language. It allowed me to gain a bigger perspective on the world and showed me how to think about things outside of my American point of view. |
Kate Eagan: France: KEDGE Business School - Fall I studied abroad in Marseille, France at KEDGE Business School in the Fall of 2023. Studying abroad gave me amazing opportunities and experiences that I would have been unable to get anywhere else. Marseille is a busy city with a strong sense of pride. The people are unique, and the landscape is even more so. While abroad, I was able to explore Europe, visiting serval countries and cities, learning about new cultures, cuisines, and languages. I gained lifelong friends who are located all around the world, practiced my spoken French, and grew as an individual. Studying abroad is the most rewarding and unique experience a person can participate in. I encourage everyone to study abroad if given the chance and cannot speak highly enough of Marseille and all the beautiful city has to offer. |
Emma Bingaman: *Voices of the City: Paris, France – Short-Term Spring Studying abroad in France gave me an opportunity to learn about a new culture and I was able to practice ordering my meals in basic French. Interacting with servers, and enjoying the amazing food was an enlightening experience. The challenge of learning basic French, as a Spanish language speaker, boosted my confidence and sense of ability. This program also allowed me to connect with peers from UNCW and create amazing friendships. If you are considering study abroad, it will change your life. |

Germany
Harry Poole: AIFS Abroad in Berlin - Summer Studying abroad isn't purely academic. You can tailor your experience based on the internships/classes you take, along with treating every day like there's no other. I saw a course in Berlin, Germany, where I would get to see one of my close friends, while also completing credits for my degree. The "Mall of Berlin" became a highlight, especially for quick food, hanging out with friends and other ventures, even making a memory rushing to eat while making the "Reichstag" visit. You make the experience. When I left this one month excursion, I changed. The program members, sites, and environment, is all invaluable experiences I will use for the rest of my life. It is an experience everyone SHOULD take advantage of while you can. |
Caitlin Wallace-Giddings: *Business in Bremen - Summer Studying abroad at Hochschule Bremen was a transformative journey, blending International Business studies with immersive cultural experiences. Bremen's historic charm, traditional food & innovations, and experiencing the exhilarating energy watching Berlin’s European World Cup, every moment enriched my global perspective. This experience was not just about academics, but about living and breathing a new culture, forging lifelong connections, and gaining insights that made it the perfect place for me to learn more about international commerce while getting a personal look at German culture. Adapting to a new culture without speaking the language allowed me to grow my patience, and think outside of the box. |
John Seay: *Invictus Games - Short-Term Fall Germany is a vast and unique country, offering more than a handful of reasons to visit, travel through, or beyond. The country offers beautiful sites, a community that feels familiar, while still teaching you through experience the day to day life of another country, and a deep, historic significance wherever you look, from early human religious life to technological advancements. The old town in Dusseldorf is an area bustling with business and culture, and the perfect place to get a first hand, authentic look at day to day life. Seeing everyone coming and going, enjoying drinks, and making their way to work showed me a genuine look into Germany, and it taught me all I wanted to know and see about germen day to day life. |

Poland
Sarra Richardson: *Exploring Strategies for Cross-Cultural Innovation in Krakow - Short-Term Spring Being a part of the study abroad community at UNCW was something that always interested me. When I decided to study in Poland, I originally had no idea what to expect because I hadn’t done a lot of research. When we arrived in Poland, I was absolutely shocked by the beauty of the landscape and architecture, the amazing diversity in food options, and the numbers of activities we were able to experience. With Poland being one of the locations of the world’s most gruesome crime, the Holocaust, we had an amazing opportunity to see the concentration camp Auschwitz during our stay. This experience helped me focus on how to make better choices for the future, so we do not repeat the past. |

Iceland
Eleanor Berry: The Green Program - Renewable Energy & Sustainability - Short-Term Spring I completed a short term study abroad in Iceland with the Green Program. During my time there, we studied some of Iceland's renewable energy sources and experienced Iceland's incredible natural phenomena. Iceland is a great place for students looking to study green alternative energy solutions. We toured many academic establishments in Iceland, as well as many power plants. Along with studying, Iceland is a great place to get re-attuned to nature! In my experience, I was able to hike mountains and glaciers, swim in hot springs while it snowed, and camp under the aura borealis. We also got to meet many local Icelanders who were very excited and willing to share their culture with us! Iceland is a wonderful country to visit for the adventurous and the sustainable! My favorite part of the trip was getting to experience the beautiful nature of the country as well as explore the capital city. Specifically, I enjoyed the hot springs in the mountains. It was a very rejuvenating experience and afterwards I felt like I could survive anything. |

Italy
Elise Gould: UNCW in Italy – Spring I loved eating my favorite Italian dishes and trying new ones, meeting people from different backgrounds, and learning about the culture and traditions in Italy. My favorite thing was walking to this beautiful cove of rock formations directly on the ocean called Bagni Regina Giovanna. Many times my friends and I would pick up sandwiches from the local market and walk there, spending the day sunbathing, swimming, and enjoying the incredible view of the Mediterranean Sea. |
Christina Laieta: UNCW in Italy - Spring A piece of my heart is still in Sorrento. It's hard to describe how incredible being abroad is, but I would absolutely love to share my experiences in order to motivate and excite students considering going abroad. While I was abroad, there were many instances where I was pushed extremely out of my comfort zone but they made me a stronger person. I am so happy to have new international friends, and it is so incredible to compare our cultures and share our life experiences. |
Julie Ayers: UNCW in Italy - Summer I studied abroad because it gave me an opportunity to get abroad experience that related back to my major and minor. I chose the summer program at The Sant'Anna Institute because it offers a wide range of classes and Sorrento offers a genuine view of Italian culture. Sorrento also is a very comforting and safe environment so while I was there I did not experience a strong sense of home sickness. The culture is what I found most enriching about my study abroad experience. Since Sorrento has a small town feel I was able to meet a lot of the locals and I was able to fully immerse myself into the Italian lifestyle. Food is a big part of the culture there so I found a lot of favorite restaurants, one being Storcio8. This was a small family owned restaurant that had a very welcoming environment; my roommate and I became friends with the owners and this made Sorrento feel all the more like home. Lastly, from Sorrento, travel is very accessible and I was able to do a lot of bucket list trips! |
Markus Hager: UNCW in Italy - Fall Studying abroad in Sorrento, Italy rocks! Living in a new country isn't just about classes, it's a crash course in different cultures, languages, and different ways of living. It is an eye-opening and mind-expanding experience. I loved the food they had in Italy; it was the best I had ever had. I also enjoyed the fact that the beach was a 10 min walk from campus. My time studying abroad pushed me out of my comfort zone, made me adaptable, and gave me lots of cool stories to share. It's not just an academic adventure; it's a life-changer! |
Ashley Caine: UNCW in Italy - Fall I think that other students should consider studying abroad in Italy because of the variety of cultures, landscapes, and experiences that the country can offer. While studying in Sorrento I was able to experience the laid-back, carefree lifestyle that is such a huge part of the Italian experience. I met some of the most amazing people and made life-long friendships. Along with the people and culture, I was also able to see some of the most breathtaking landscapes and beautiful natural areas in the world. My favorite place in Sorrento was the Marina Grande. My window in my dorm room overlooked the marina and I never got used to how breathtaking the view was. I would watch the sunset set over the sea there every day, go there to read or study, swam for the first time in the Mediterranean there, and would often go to the restaurants to enjoy dinner with friends. |
Isabelle Senff: UNCW In Italy - Fall Studying abroad in Sorrento, Italy was a life-changing experience. I was immediately drawn to the small town situated along the Amalfi coast. My major is Environmental Science, and since Sorrento is located on the Bay of Naples, I wanted to learn about the coastal town’s sustainable practices. I loved eating breakfast every morning on the dorm balcony overlooking Marina Grande and Mt. Vesuvius, and through one of my classes at Sant'Anna Institute, I was even able to hike Mt. Vesuvius. I cannot recommend studying abroad enough! |

It teaches you so much outside of your traditional learning experience. You learn about a new culture in a way that a textbook could never teach you. It is truly lifechanging. Mary Carr: AIFS Abroad in Florence – Spring Studying abroad made me more independent, and I learned to trust myself while traveling in Florence, Italy. Being out of your comfort zone is important for personal growth and confidence. While taking a painting class I was able to focus on the finer details of the artwork and architecture of Italy, that I never would have appreciated, if I had not gone to Italy. One of my favorite places was the Piazzale Michelangelo in Florence, which has a beautiful view of the city. I loved meeting people from all walks of life & it opened my eyes to how much more to life there is. |
Alyssa Shockley: AIFS Abroad in Florence - Spring I had the most wonderful time living in Florence, Italy. This past semester, I traveled to 10 other countries and immersed myself in Italian culture, experiencing authentic Italian traditions, language, and lifestyle firsthand. Being away from home, I learned to navigate unfamiliar environments and solve problems on my own, which boosted my independence, self-confidence, and resilience. One of my favorite memories was celebrating a friend's birthday. We went to the Michelangelo steps; with a stunning view of the entire city, we watched the sunset and listened to a local street artist playing music while people around us were dancing and singing along. |
Amy Ryherd: AIFS Abroad in Florence - Summer I studied abroad to experience life across the globe, and to fully immerse myself in a new culture for the first time. I decided to study in Florence, Italy, and I can confidently say that choosing this city was the best decision of my life. I went into this entire experience knowing zero individuals, and I was able to meet so many new people who changed my life. The food, architecture, friendliness of the locals, amazing teachers, and the apartment I was assigned to was everything I could ask for. I was able to travel to five other different countries while I was abroad, and every single place I traveled did not disappoint. My program took us on multiple trips and offered enriching classes that were unique to Florence's culture. If I could go back in time, I would have studied abroad for an entire semester instead of a short summer term. I am already planning my next study abroad endeavor and I am excited to meet more people! |
Emily Parks: AIFS Abroad in Florence - Summer Studying abroad in Florence was the best experience I could have asked for! The people, food, culture, and overall experience was amazing. The sense of joy and fulfillment I felt abroad was unmatched, leaving me with a deep sense of gratitude and unforgettable memories. |

I traveled all over Italy and Europe to countries like Iceland, Germany, Portugal, and Croatia, which enriched my knowledge of not only Italian culture but European culture as well. |

Greece
Morgan Karmanocky: *From Danger Zone to Blue Zone: Ikaria, Greece - Summer Students should study abroad because it exposes them to a whole different area of life. It’s amazing to meet a lot of different people from a completely different culture who speak a different language. It’s also very refreshing to unplug from the daily rush of American culture. My favorite thing about my trip abroad was the time I was able to spend outdoors hiking, learning about the land, and experiencing the different types of vegetation and wildlife. It made me grow my passion for Mother Nature! Ikaria, Greece also has some of the freshest food I’ve ever had. They really value the phrase from garden to table. I even got to take a cooking class where I picked the vegetables for my meal. |
Kellsie Kurgat: American College of Thessaloniki - Spring Greece was an amazing destination abroad. The breathtaking views, unique culture, and endless list of famous landmarks the country has to offer made my experience a ten out of ten. The most memorable experience in Greece was definitely hiking Mt. Olympus. It was a 5 hour long hike, extremely difficult and mentally challenging, but I would do it again. |
Chloe Christman: AIFS Abroad in Athens, Greece – Summer Greece is such a breathtaking place. Being immersed in the Greek culture was the first time I experienced different customs, foods, traditions and social norms. I loved hearing about their life experiences, and it was amazing seeing how different it was from home in America. Through my time abroad, I was given the opportunity to expand my knowledge about the world in a way that a classroom alone would never be able to provide! |
Emily Wilkinson: *Physical Activity and Wellness in the Blue Zone of Greece - Summer I think it is important for students of any year or major to have hands-on learning experiences outside of the classroom. Being able to see how living an active lifestyle from a young age helped the people of Ikaria, Greece live longer than most people in the world was very interesting to me. I found that the small things they do in their day-to-day lives are also simple changes that I could make in my own life to be able to live a healthier, happier, and longer life. If you are looking into studying abroad and have a passion for health, fitness, or even just love to meet kind new people, I highly suggest looking into a trip to Greece. The lifestyle in Greece is much different than the active or healthy lifestyles we see here in the U.S. By learning about their lifestyle, I believe it will help you gain a new viewpoint on health and how you treat your body. This trip changed how I take care of myself and the activities I choose to do in my day-to-day life, and I hope it could have the same positive effects on your life as well! |

I met so many amazing people who were eager to share their culture with us. Having experienced new people and places, I am now better equipped to serve others with respect and understanding. |

Spain
Rainey Wallen: *Discover History & Culture in the Spanish Empire - Short-Term Fall Spain is the historical center for many global trades and ideas which can give one an understanding of the interconnectedness of everything in our world. What I found most enriching about my experience were the friends I made and trying new foods in all the amazing restaurants and cafes. Studying abroad in Spain offers so much history and culture that can be an enriching experience for any degree program. I think everyone should consider studying abroad in Spain. |
Madison Mclane: *Valencia - Summer I I chose to make the most of my time in Valencia, Spain and while the Spanish culture of the Siesta is infatuating, I took advantage of the midday freeze to shop till I dropped and sight-see. I took any chance that I could to walk or bike to school to experience my environment with every sense I could bolster. My favorite experience was being hosted by a Brazilian family during my time there. We had such rich conversations and got to experience so much more food and architecture that way. |
Victoria Castro: *Valencia - Summer I Students should study abroad to see the world in a different way, it makes you more open to new ideas and seeing a different way of life than in just the US. I experienced a new culture, new people, new styles, new ideas, and a different language which is a very humbling experience. In Spain, the architecture is gorgeous and there are many famous sights to see such as La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona and festivals and traditions to take part in such as Las Fallas! Of course, the food is also amazing, Paella is a must-try! My favorite experience in Spain was going to my Spanish class and the teachers at the University of Valencia. It was cool to have a traditional experience on campus with a Spanish teacher where I learned a lot about their history, language, and culture in both inside and outside of the classroom. Spain an amazing county to visit! |
Sydney Waddell: AIFS Abroad in Seville, Spain - Spring Studying abroad in Spain was a life-changing experience for me! Spain has so much to offer students including amazing people, food, and beautiful historic places to see. I choose the city of Seville, Spain to experience life there for a semester. Seville and living there as a student were perfect for me because, it was just small enough that I was not overwhelmed by a new city, but I still got a feel for true life in Spain. While in Spain, I was exposed to the Cuisine of Spain and took a class on how to properly cook their foods! This was an amazing class that left me with knowledge of how to cook dishes such as gazpacho and croquetas. I am excited to share my insight with anyone who is interested in studying abroad or anyone who will listen! |
Ravi Hafiz: AIFS Abroad in Valencia, Spain -Spring I chose to study in Valencia, Spain because it is the perfect size, with plenty of things to do, food to try, and people to meet, without being as overwhelming as Barcelona or Madrid. This led to some of the most fun activities like Capea (running with the bulls) and exploring tiny towns in the Valencian region. From now on, I will always have friends and memories around the world. |

These are definitely some of my favorite memories abroad and lived up to the hype. |
Noel Ruiz-Santiago: *Valencia - Summer I It can be tricky being alone in a foreign country. If you are hesitant about studying abroad alone, this program allows you to kind of dip your toes in and learn whether you could ever go to a country by yourself. In this program, you always have help, and you don't have to go alone. I liked the fact that I was about 10 minutes away from everything. I also really enjoyed using the transportation because it was easy to use, and it was reliable. The zoo, aquarium, and park were amazing and beautiful. I would love to go back and see those parts again. |
Delaney Sauers: AIFS Abroad in Seville, Spain - Spring I lived right outside of the "fair grounds" and saw, throughout my semester there, the portada being constructed and all of the casetas, or "little houses" being built. I liked walking around the Triana neighborhood, through their food market, where I took a cooking class one evening, and seeing all the different seafood, fruits, and meats they had on display. During Feria, I got to experience the authentic sevilla feria experience when I met my host grandfather. He let my friends and I into his caseta, where we listened to sevillanas music, enjoyed the cuisine, watched the dancing, and listened to everyone speaking in Spanish. |
Bridget Flanagan: *Valencia - Summer I Choosing to study abroad in Valencia, Spain was one of the most spontaneous and best decisions I have ever made. But one of my favorite memories, was sitting outside at a restaurant with my friends and a few Valencian musicians walked by and started playing lively music, and our group got up and danced for a few minutes. Avry Regan: Australia: James Cook University - Spring |
Jordan Lamoreux: Australia: *New Year's Down Under- Short-Term Spring I believe that other students should study abroad in Australia if they have the opportunity to do so because it truly is an experience like no other. Australia is so diverse and unlike any other country I have ever visited. There are so many different cultures and places to explore, not to mention the food is out of this world. Since Australia is part of the Asia-Pacific region, I learned so much more about not only Australia itself, but also about Asian-Pacific culture. My favorite experience in Australia was taking day trips to the beaches! The water was insanely clear and beautiful, and using public transportation to get there was super easy. Exploring different areas with my peers are some of my favorite memories from studying abroad! |
Macie Hall: Australia: *New Year's Down Under - Short-Term Spring I studied abroad in Australia because it was a short-term program, and I did not want to be away for a whole semester. I met one of my new closest friends while I was abroad in Australia. My favorite experience while studying abroad was snorkeling around the Great Barrier Reef! I loved seeing all the different kinds of fish and coral. The time I spent there I won't forget. A piece of my heart will always be in Australia! |

Studying abroad in Australia helped me grow academically and personally, giving me new perspectives on business and life. |

Multi-Country
Courtney Wilson: Semester at Sea Through Semester at Sea, you develop a better intercultural identity while traveling to ten different countries and having personal experiences with the cultures you visit. My favorite aspect about Semester at Sea, was that our shipboard community became close and we cared about one another like a family, our Academic Dean knew the name of every student and faculty on board, despite that there was over 600 of us. My favorite experience in country was in India when I met, Mahz, a student from St. Theresa's College. We met at a welcome reception through Semester at Sea on the first day at port; where she taught me about her culture and in return, I shared a bit about mine. |
