  • Explore your interests, values, personality, and workplace preferences by using PathwayU.  
  • Gain experience through internships, jobs (your Career Center), research (ask your prof), education abroad (check out International Programs), and volunteer work (visit The Office of Student Leadership and Engagement) to help you learn more about yourself and the opportunities available to you.   
  • Be curious and seek out opportunities to learn from alumni, faculty, staff, and members of the community. Everyone has a story - Ask for an informational interview as a great learning tool! 
  • Take on duties and responsibilities that will help you to progress professionally, like stepping up to help others and learning a new computer program (among others). 

Clearly articulate thoughts and ideas with respect to diversity of learning styles and cultural differences ■ Inform relevant others when needing guidance with assigned tasks ■ Listen to others & ask clarifying questions

  • Write stories, advertisements, press releases or newsletters for Student Media, a local non-profit, or a club you’ve joined. 
  • Work in an on-campus office (i.e. - Information desk in Fisher, Career Center front desk, academic department assistant, etc.)  
  • Do fundraising for nonprofit events or volunteer for a political campaign – persuade constituents to give money or votes! 
  • Enroll in a writing intensive class that includes presentations – practice and hone writing and public speaking skills. 

Proactively anticipate needs and prioritize action steps ■ Gather & analyze information from diverse sources to fully understand a problem ■ Multi-task in a fast-paced environment

  • Organize a campus event, including volunteer staff, budget, marketing, etc. The pace requires attention to detail AND a big-picture mind set.  
  • Work as a lab assistant with computers, science, or language where your fellow students rely on your ability to make sound decisions and actively listen to them.  
  • Update your resume every semester to analyze the marketable skills you gained from your academic program and your co-curricular involvement.  
  • Do a mock interview to prepare stories that align with careers you like.  Can you articulate their value to the career?

Solicit & use feedback from multiple cultural perspectives to make inclusive & equity-minded decisions ■ Engage in anti-racist practices that actively challenge the systems, structures, & policies of racism ■ Identify resources & eliminate barriers resulting from individual & systemic racism, inequities, & biases ■ Be open, inclusive, and respectful of individual differences

  • Diversify your network by seeking opportunities outside your normal circle of influence  
  • Volunteer as an International Student Mentor or Conversation  
  • Partner through the International Programs office  
  • Actively contribute to inclusive & equitable practices that influence individual & systemic change
