Diandre' Richie '24
During his undergraduate journey at UNCW, Diandre' Richie '24 experienced unexpected opportunities, from conducting research to studying abroad. His enthusiasm for research earned him the prestigious NOAA Hollings Scholarship. As a student leader and study abroad ambassador, he made it his goal to ensure that everyone, regardless of their background, could access the same opportunities he did. Richie was awarded the William A. Bryan Senior Leader Award for his contributions as a campus leader. Read more here.
EVENTS
Several events are planned in the Cape Fear to celebrate Juneteenth during the month of June.
Per the Juneteenth Committee of Wilmington:
- Thursday, June 13: Urban Hike and Luncheon at the MLK Center from 9 a.m. to noon
- Friday, June 14: Juneteenth Step Show at the MLK Center from 6 to 9 p.m.
- Saturday, June 15: Juneteenth Festival at Maides Park starting at noon
- Sunday, June 16: Speak Ya Peace Juneteenth celebration at the Cameron Art Museum from 1 to 4 p.m.

- "Opening with libations and a reading from Langston Hughes followed by historians Sonya Bennetone Patrick and Mama Makeda. Hear music and poetry from Soltree Reign and take part in community conversations from local organizations. Sample local flavors from food trucks, and enjoy children's activities in the galleria," the CAM website states.
- The event is free to attend with museum admission, and a $5 donation is suggested.
- Monday, June 17: Faith and Freedom: The Spiritual Roots of Liberation and Juneteenth film and panel discussion at the UNCW Upperman Center starting at 6 p.m.
- Tuesday, June 18: Film Screening of Shirley at the MLK Center from 5 to 7 p.m.
- Tuesday, June 18: Cape Fear Community College Juneteenth celebration from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

- The free event is open to the public and will be at Windell Daniels Hall, on the top floor of CFCC's Union Station at 502 N. Front St.
- There will be educational opportunities on the history of Juneteenth, a fair showcasing black-owned business, catering by On Thyme Catering and a t-shirt giveaway. Food and t-shirts will be available while supplies last.
- "Juneteenth is a pivotal day in American history," said Donterio Perkins, CFCC Diversity Success Coordinator. "We are excited to host this event and bring our community together to celebrate African American culture and heritage."
- Wednesday, June 19: Juneteenth Breakfast at Thalian Hall City Council from 9 a.m. to noon
- Wednesday, June 19: Free screening of Glory starring Denzel Washington at Jengo's Playhouse with a reception starting at 6:30 p.m.

- Sunday, June 23: Juneteenth Gospel Fest at Willison Middle School from 3 to 5 p.m.
- Wednesday, June 26: Juneteenth Teach-in at the UNCW Upperman Center from noon to 3:30 p.m.
- Saturday, June 29: Juneteenth Poetry Workshop with Jaki Shelton Green at the CAM from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Saturday, June 30: Juneteenth Pageant at the MLK Center starting at 2 p.m.
