We are committed to establishing a proactive environment that is sensitive to the issues and concerns that Black faculty, staff, and students face including mentoring, tutoring, recruitment, retention, and promotion.

Our work and goals include:

• Fostering a sense of unity and collegiality among the Black faculty and staff
• Encouraging and supporting efforts at upward mobility through effective mentoring
• Assisting with the UNCW diversity initiative by encouraging the recruitment and retention of Black faculty, staff, and students
• Bringing issues of importance concerning Black faculty, staff, and students to the attention of senior administrators at UNCW
• Providing UNCW leaders with a comprehensive and representative Black perspective on institutional, societal, and programmatic matters
• Serving as a resource to connect UNCW to Wilmington and its surrounding communities

The Black Faculty and Staff Association presents the Dr. Lynne Reeder and Dr. Earl Sheridan Merit Scholarship at the Sankofa Graduation Ceremony each May.

It is awarded to a deserving UNCW full-time, rising sophomore, junior or senior for the upcoming academic year based on academic achievement.

Criteria

To be considered for the scholarship, applicants must be currently enrolled as a UNCW student with a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher.

Special consideration is given to students who have a record of community involvement and demonstrated leadership in working with the African American community.

Applicants must email or fax submissions to the Upperman Center:

• A one- or two-page essay of 500 words or less on “why you are a deserving student for this scholarship.”
• A copy of transcript.

Recipients are notified of the award by the BFSA and the Offices of Financial Aid and Veterans Services via a formal letter. They are encouraged to attend the Sankofa Ceremony to receive the scholarship.
