Thank you for taking the time and interest in becoming a Residence Coordinator for UNCW Housing & Residence Life! The Residence Coordinator is a live-in staff member responsible for one of eight residential areas of 400-660 residents on a campus consisting of seven residence halls, eleven suite style buildings, and twenty apartment buildings that house almost 4200 students.

The Residence Coordinator supervises a staff of 8 to 15 resident assistants, one graduate Assistant Residence Coordinator, and 10-30 desk receptionists. The Residence Coordinator serves as a rotating crisis management contact for all residential students.
The Residence Coordinator ensures University Code of Conduct and HRL Community Standards are enforced and documented. In addition, the Residence Coordinator serves as a university conduct officer in the Office of the Dean of Students adjudicating both housing and non-housing cases. The Residence Coordinator manages a budget ranging from $7000 – $35,000 and must possess an understanding of departmental budgeting processes. In addition, the Residence Coordinator relies heavily on administrative skills to manage facilities operations, committee tasks, human resources processes and staff training systems.
UNC Wilmington prides itself on providing a “high touch” institutional setting for its students. As a result, the Residence Coordinator is expected to be familiar with their residents while providing support and mentoring through consistent student interactions. The Residence Coordinator is also tasked with creating a communities of respect and inclusiveness centered on UNCW’s “Seahawk Respect Compact”.
The Residence Coordinator coordinates residential learning by implementing social and educational programs that meet the needs of the residential community. In addition, priority is placed on developing and maintaining positive working relationships with colleagues across the Division of Student Affairs. As a result, Residence Coordinators must maintain strong relationships with the Office of the Dean of Students, the Counseling Center, Collaboration for Assault Response & Education Office, the Title IX Office, University Police, Health Center and other university support offices.
At UNC Wilmington our principle role is to educate students and we consider the Residence Coordinator a vital student development educator who serves this instructional mission.
Supervision and Staff Development
- Supervise 8 – 15 Residents Assistants, 1 graduate assistant, and 10 – 30 Desk Receptionists.
- Serve as a member of departmental selection committees by recruiting, interviewing, and hiring student staff employees.
- Provide staff with orientation to respective hall and area, and clearly and frequently define responsibilities and duties of the Resident Assistant and Graduate Assistant.
- Plan and conduct weekly RA staff meetings for the purpose of dissemination of information, training, input, support, accountability, and evaluation of performance.
- Provide weekly one-on-one supervision meetings to RAs evaluate and improve necessary skills.
- Evaluate staff through a formalized RA performance evaluation process each semester. The evaluative process is used in rehiring, terminating, and writing future recommendations.
- Assist in planning and implementing campus wide staff training.
Administrative and Business Functions
- Assist Associate Director in planning, implementing, and evaluating all policy decisions affecting the Residence Life program.
- Attend all weekly RC staff meetings, scheduled month departmental meetings, and others meetings as scheduled by the Director and Associate Director.
- Serve as the primary fiscal manager for RA programming, staff development, Area Council, and departmental special program budgets ranging between $7,000 and $35,000.
- Assist the Associate Director with yearly development of the operating budget for the Residence Life area.
- Maintain thorough records and prepare all reports as required by the Director and Associate Director. Maintain essential office records, process time sheets, and maintain accurate hall rosters for area.
- Prepare monthly and year-end reports for the Office of Housing and Residence Life.
- Evaluate, approve and process room changes after open room change period each semester.
- Chair a departmental committee, organize all work relating to the committee, and compile a yearly committee report.
Student Conduct
- Serve as a Conduct Officer in the Office of the Dean of Students with the ability to administer educational and status sanctions, as well as recommend student suspensions.
- Assist in the training of Resident Assistant staff on Housing & Residence Life policy and the Student Code of Conduct.
- Confront individual or group violations and document situations as appropriate.
- Review incident reports and submit conduct cases to the Office of the Dean of Students in a timely manner.
- Conduct inquiries, investigations, and follow-up on discipline cases.
- Act as a referral agent for residents by utilizing appropriate University and or community resources.
- Serve as a student development educator in all student conduct situations.
Crisis Management and Duty Coverage
- Serve after-business hours duty for the entire campus on a rotating basis.
- Respond to student crisis situations and inform colleagues of situations when not on duty.
- Possess and maintain knowledge of helping skills related to suicide gestures, sexual assault, alcohol and drug abuse, conflict management, safety and security issues, eating disorders, etc.
- Respond to all crisis management calls during duty hours serving as a resource person and decision-maker for staff.
- Counsel and support students in crisis until University Police, Counseling Center staff or other resource personnel assume control.
- Respond to all students taken to area hospitals while on duty and provide accurate information to the Crisis Response Manger and other necessary University staff
- Ensure RA staff duty coverage by scheduling daily shifts for staff and monitoring coverage.
- Maintain strong relationships with University Police, Counseling Center and Health Center staff, etc.
Hall/Area Programming
- Implement the programming model reflecting the needs of the student population, dynamics of the hall/area and current student development trends. Establish and coordinate this model around community development principles.
- Coordinate programmatic events within the hall around the five programming pillars
- Assist RA staff in planning, publicizing, implementing, and evaluating programs.
- Attend RA programs for support and evaluation.
- Work with RA staff to attend programs and events planned and sponsored by other student development offices and academic departments.
- Submit program tallies and evaluation of programmatic efforts each month.
Community Development
- Take an active role in dealing with or settling disputes, common area vandalism, and harassment.
- Assist students in adjusting to the residence hall/area and the University community.
- Establish, develop, and maintain open relationships with individual residents in the hall/area.
- Work with students and staff to maintain the rights and privacy of all residents.
- Teach responsibility for one’s actions and consideration of others in a group living situation through formal and informal one-on-one interaction, floor meetings, and program attendance.
- Eat regularly in the dining hall with residents, student staff and pro staff / partners
- Encourage and support students in their involvement in hall/area programming, campus activities, and athletic endeavors.
Maintenance & Custodial
- Serve as a liaison to maintenance and housekeeping staff and communicate maintenance and housekeeping issues to the central office for resolution.
- Responsible for working with residents to keep halls, study areas, bathrooms, lounges, stairways, etc. clean and in good condition.
- Investigate and identify person(s) responsible for vandalism/damages to residential facilities and furnishings, and monitor group billing situations.
- Supervise hall/pod/apartment Health and Safety inspections once a semester. Provide guidelines, assist in making judgments about room conditions, and coordinate follow-up referrals.
- Conduct bi-weekly maintenance walks, and at least 1 hall walk per semester with the Associate Director of Facilities or designee.
- Make suggestions for improvements to the living area.
- Convey capital improvement concerns to the central office staff.
Academic Support
- Serve as an advisor/consultant for students dealing with academic, social, or personal problems.
- Meet with building residents who have obtained a GPA of 2.0 or lower in the fall semester to assess and support academic skills.
- Be knowledgeable of all academic support resources and their procedures for service.
Qualifications and Requirements
Minimum requirements are a four-year degree from an accredited college or university; Master's degree in Higher Education, Counseling, Student Personnel or related field is preferred. Residence Hall experience required.

UNCW residence halls allow all students the opportunity to become actively involved in campus life. UNCW Housing and Residence Life provides a variety of programs and activities in and around the residence halls to enhance students' total educational experience. All of the residence halls are accessible in that they have elevators and adapted restrooms.
Further, entrances to all buildings are either ramp-accessible or located on the ground floor. The first floor of each residence hall has all the services that are available on higher-level floors to allow students with disabilities equal access to services. University Suites has some first-floor units that have been designed to accommodate students with disabilities.
