Her research area is the academic success of ethnic and racial minorities, particularly of Hispanic students at selective colleges or universities. In her 23 years of work with public education, she has served populations underrepresented in higher education, taught world languages (Spanish and ELL), coordinated migrant education programs, and served as diversity and inclusion administrator.

Angel Garcia

garciaab@uncw.eduAngel Garcia was born and raised in Managua, Nicaragua and he calls Tampa Bay, Florida hometown in the U.S. Angel’s areas of interest include academic access and success, conflict analysis and resolution and identity development and exploration. Angel regards himself as a storyteller and uses his personal narrative as a way to connect with people. Assisting people in exploring sustainable practices to create balance and healing is what fills his spirit. In his 12 years as a higher education professional, Angel has experienced the areas of Residential Life and Housing, Living Learning Communities, DEI Work, and College Access and Success.

roblesm@uncw.edu Mayra Robles is from Rocky Point, NC, and Mexican heritage. Mayra’s areas of interest include mentoring students, programming, and reporting data. She is passionate in working with Hispanic/Latinx students in developing their professional careers. In her five years as a professional, Mayra has experienced the areas of teaching, programming for high school and college students, coordinating campus tours, counseling students transitioning from high school to college through the admission process, and recruiting high school students entering college.
