Background and Current Research

Dr. Alam is a Research Associate Professor at University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW), Center for Marine Science (CMS), Finfish Aquaculture Program and has been working at UNCW since May 2005. Before coming to UNCW, he spent about 8 years in the Lab of Aquatic Animal Nutrition, Faculty of Fisheries, Kagoshima University, Japan and completed his Masters (Year 2000), Ph. D. (Year 2003) and JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship (Year 2003-2005, Major: Aquaculture Nutrition). Dr. Alam also completed Executive MBA in May 2007 from UNCW under the Business of Marine Biotechnology Fellowship sponsored by the MARBIONC® (Marine Biotechnology in North Carolina, UNCW, USA).

Dr. Alam is involved with aquaculture research and feed development of finfish at the CMS, UNCW targeting the commercialization of high value marine fish in recirculating aquaculture system. Dr. Alam has been awarded several competitive research grants (a total of 3.3 million dollars as PI and Co-PI) collaborating with other scientists/professors for aquaculture research funded by National Science Foundation (NSF), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), USDA, North Carolina Sea Grant, North Carolina Biotechnology Center, Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, MARBIONC and Cotton Incorporated, Cary, NC. Dr. Alam published 49 peer reviewed papers as first or coauthors in highly reputed professional peer-reviewed journals, 64 conference abstracts and 35 conference presentations. Dr. Alam has attended and presented several papers in national and international aquaculture related conferences in USA, Japan, Australia, China, Greece, Denmark, Thailand, Malaysia and Bangladesh. Dr. Alam is a graduate research faculty member at UNCW, USA and working as an Associate Editor of Journal of Aquaculture and Marine Biology and in the Editorial Board of Fisheries and Aquatic Science, and reviewer of several professional international journals. Dr. Alam is a co-author of a Book Chapter: Marine Finfish Aquaculture In: Aquaculture: Farming Aquatic Animals and Plants, 3rd Edition. (J.S. Lucas, P.C. Southgate, and C.M. Tucker, Eds.). Wiley-Blackwell and Sons Ltd. In addition, Dr. Alam has worked as an international aquaculture consultant (June 2015) for USAID/Bangladesh to conduct a gap analysis of the aquaculture sub-sector within USAID Feed the Future Zone in Bangladesh invited by the US Embassy, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Dr. Alam was an invited aquaculture panel member for the 46th United States-Japan Natural Resources Scientific Symposium in Nov 13-16, 2018.

His main research and publication at UNCW focus on finfish and crustacean nutrition and feed technology. Dr. Alam’s main research interest is the development of nutritionally balanced, sustainable and cost-effective practical diets for commercial aquaculture species. Dr. Alam’s ongoing research at UNCW include: commercialization of important mariculture species in recirculating aquaculture system, formulation of high performing fish feed, replacement of fish meal protein  and lipid by alternative protein and lipid sources, evaluation of locally available ingredients as fish feed, larval, juvenile, grow-out and broodstock feed development for commercially important food fish (such as black sea bass, southern flounder, red porgy/pink snapper and  gag grouper) in the Southeastern United States. Dr. Alam is currently involved with integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA), more specifically polyculture of marine fish with salt-tolerant halophyte plant Salicornia sp.(sea beans) for human food and uses IMTA as aquaculture waste management approach.
