Thomas J. Nietman

Clinical Assistant Professor

Thomas Nietman RRT, RRT-ACCS, RCP is an accomplished healthcare educator and administrator with over nine years of experience in higher education. Before transitioning into academia, Thomas worked as a bedside Respiratory Therapist at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where he honed clinical expertise in intensive care and emergency department settings.
In 2020, Thomas became a founding member of the University of North Carolina Wilmington’s Respiratory Therapy program and continues to serve as its inaugural Director of Clinical Education. In this role, he helps lead clinical training initiatives, fosters partnerships with healthcare organizations and providers, and mentors students pursuing careers in respiratory care.
In recognition of his dedication to student growth and success, Nietman received the 2024 UNCW Discere Aude Award for undergraduate mentorship. Passionate about advancing the profession of respiratory therapy, he remains actively engaged in shaping the future of the discipline through professional service in the AARC and NCSRC.
