UNCW has provided Caleb Herron ’25 with an environment where he can thrive, unlocking his full potential and experiencing unique opportunities, such as traveling to diverse locations through the university’s study abroad program.

“I was able to learn about the different ways people lived, and it inspired me to change the way I do some things in my life,” he said. “It allowed me to adapt better to change and be able to understand that while we may do some things differently, we are all still human.”

Herron has explored nine countries and experienced unforgettable moments. While some of his travels were individual experiences, the others were through AIFS, a study abroad organization associated with UNCW. He encourages students to study abroad, highlighting that it offers a chance to explore the world, understand other cultures and earn class credits.

“I learned a lot about myself as I went into this experience knowing no one else and having never been out of the country before. It helped me realize that I am resilient, and I can do what I set my mind to,” said Herron.

Herron is now a study abroad ambassador and actively participates in multiple UNCW student organizations, including serving as president of Le Cercle Français, an AIFS abroad ambassador and an international student mentor.  He also serves as a French tutor at the University Learning Center.

He is double majoring in French and communication studies and anticipates graduating in fall 2025. Herron has received scholarships during his time at UNCW, including the UNCW Merit-Based Scholarship and the Seahawk Grant, which has supported Herron throughout his four years as an undergraduate. He also received the Spirit of Service Scholarship from Blumenthal Performing Arts. After graduation, Herron would like to pursue a career in marketing, before he travels abroad to teach English in France.

“My passion for French started in my classes in middle and high school, where I found that learning the language was something I loved. As for communication studies, I believe that strong communication skills are essential, yet many people struggle with them,” said Herron. “I found that this is a versatile major that provides me with the ability to explore different topics, such as integrated marketing communication, performance studies and media production classes.”

He also is an office assistant at the Asian Heritage Cultural Center and appreciates being a part of a supportive and inclusive community.

“It’s comforting to know there’s a place on campus where I can always find friendly faces and a welcoming environment,” he said. “It means a lot to me that we have a space where I feel comfortable to hang out and connect with others.”

He appreciates the environment and community at UNCW, valuing the many great aspects the school offers.

“I found some forever friends here, and I am so grateful that I was able to meet them, thanks to UNCW,” said Herron. “I fell in love with the campus and was welcomed with open arms by students and faculty alike.”
