Susan Smith manages all membership services for the Pat Leonard Student Recreation Center, which includes supervising student office staff and the “Kudos” student recognition incentive program.
In addition to her work with students, Smith is the current chair of the Staff Senate. She is thankful to work with UNCW’s senators to advocate for staff, celebrate staff and help create a community for staff to engage with each other.
“It’s a passion we all share,” she said.

She also serves as vice chair of the UNC System Staff Assembly, facilitating monthly meetings with senate chairs from all campuses across the UNC System. The chairs share ideas and initiatives that are making a positive impact on staff on their campus that others can take back to theirs.
Smith is eager to see UNCW’s new Soar Higher strategic plan continuing to be implemented and the development of the new Campus Master Plan.
“These plans are the blueprint for us to write the next chapter of this great institution by working together to make sure we are keeping the students at the top of every decision,” she said.
No matter how busy her days are, Smith starts each the same by “checking in with the students first thing because it always puts your day on the right path.”
She does have a favorite student though...her son Ben. “I could not be a prouder SEAHAWK parent!”
