Watson Celebrates Start of the New Semester

This fall, the Watson College was pleased to welcome 22 freshmen to the Education Learning Community. The ELC provides first-year education majors with a learning community that supports academic, social and educational development. Through the ELC, students have the opportunity to attend classes together, connect with Watson faculty and staff, and participate in education field experiences during their first year on campus. The ELCs have been learning about the great resources in Watson including the Curriculum Materials Center and the Ed Lab, and a beach outing is planned for early October!

Watson Connect

At the start of the fall and spring semesters, the Watson College opens our doors to all UNCW students interested in learning more about the majors/minors we offer, as well as support services from Watson and around campus. This year, nearly 200 students participated in the “fair style” event held in the Education Building on August 30. The event gives students an opportunity to meet with faculty, tour the Ed Lab and CMC, learn about field experiences, student organizations and other opportunities. A photo booth with props was a highlight of the event, and more than 20 students posted videos to social media answering their “Why UNCW,” “Why Watson,” or “Why Education.”

A second Watson Connect was held in Jacksonville on September 11. Thanks to all of our extension students that stopped by the Onslow Education Lab or joined in online to participate in the event!

Transfer Student Breakfast

Nearly half of all Watson undergraduate students are transfer students. On August 30, the Watson Student Success Center hosted a breakfast to welcome new transfer students to campus! The event gave students an opportunity to meet with advisors and each other, and learn about opportunities at UNCW and Watson.

Opportunities to Stay Connected

With many student organizations here at Watson – and over 250 student organizations on campus -  there are many ways for students to get involved. Visit our Involvement & Support webpage to learn more!

Students are also invited to stop by the Second Floor Lounge in the Education Building during lunch hour on the first and third Wednesdays – and the second and fourth Tuesdays – of each month. The new “Watson’s Social Updraft” events hosted by the Student Success Center give students an opportunity to grab a snack and stretch their social wings between classes.

Preview Days

Each semester, the Watson College hosts preview day events for high school and transfer students interested in becoming a teacher. The events feature information about Watson’s undergraduate degree and licensure programs, a tour of the beautiful education building and a student panel discussion. The first Preview Day was held on September 16, and students interested in learning more about education programs at UNCW were invited to stop by the Watson College after UNCW’s Seahawk Saturday Open House on September 30.

Students interested in learning more about Preview Day events and programs offered by the Watson College should contact WCE Recruiter Dean Heath at heatht@uncw.edu.
