Toni Pence, associate professor and chair of the UNCW Department of Computer Science, has been honored with the Outstanding Young Alumni Award from Clemson University’s College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences.
The award recognizes graduates age 40 or younger who have demonstrated exceptional professional achievement or made meaningful contributions to society.
Pence, who holds both a Ph.D. and master’s degree in computer science from Clemson, became chair of UNCW’s Department of Computer Science in 2023. The youngest to hold the role, she has led efforts to grow the faculty and establish advisory boards that strengthen connections with industry, alumni and community partners.
“I am deeply honored to receive the Outstanding Young Alumni Award from Clemson University’s College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences. Clemson played a transformative role in my academic and professional journey, providing the foundation for my career in computer science and higher education leadership,” said Pence. “I am grateful to the mentors, colleagues and classmates who supported me along the way. This recognition is especially meaningful because it comes from an institution that has shaped so much of who I am.”
An expert in human‑computer interaction and virtual reality, Pence’s research focuses on immersive systems and their applications in education and training, particularly within healthcare. Her work has supported major initiatives such as virtual pediatric patient simulations designed to enhance clinical training and gamified security awareness programs that improve learning outcomes.
Pence is an advocate for broadening participation in computing, dedicated to student mentorship and championing efforts that support women pursuing STEM fields.
“I am proud to represent UNCW and remain committed to expanding opportunities in computing, supporting student success and creating pathways for future generations in STEM.”
