UNCW is working to expand access to high-quality online programs for adult learners across North Carolina as it joins Project Kitty Hawk, the University of North Carolina System’s affiliated education technology nonprofit.
Since the first Flight Path program launched in October 2023, Project Kitty Hawk has helped universities in the UNC System enroll more than 3,000 adult learners. As of January, 2,193 students were enrolled in one of 19 online Flight Path degree programs, more than double the total reported last year. In fall 2026, two existing UNCW degrees will be offered as Flight Path programs: the Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies and the Bachelor of Science in Workforce Learning and Development.
“These programs reflect UNCW’s commitment to expanding access and meeting the needs of today’s adult learners,” said Interim Provost Robert Burrus. “By leveraging Project Kitty Hawk’s innovative online infrastructure, we can provide flexible, high‑quality pathways that empower working professionals to advance their education, enhance their skills and strengthen North Carolina’s workforce.”
Created by the General Assembly in 2021, Project Kitty Hawk is designed to reach working adults seeking to advance their education. Across all programs, the average student is 32 years old, and 75% work full time while enrolled.
