UNCW Will Close Early Tuesday Due to Winter Weather Conditions

UNCW Alert

According to the National Weather Service, cold temperatures with wind chills as low as the teens will affect the Wilmington area starting tomorrow, Jan. 21, throughout the week. The area in and near Wilmington may experience snowy conditions Tuesday afternoon and overnight into the morning of Wednesday, Jan. 22.

Beginning at 2 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, classes and events are cancelled. UNCW plans to follow its normal operating schedule until 2 p.m. Tuesday, when Condition 1 will go into effect for employees.

A campus update about classes and campus operations on Wednesday, Jan. 22 will be shared by 6 p.m. Tuesday unless conditions warrant earlier notification.

Classes

Students should contact their course instructor(s) as soon as possible if they feel weather conditions will not permit them to attend class Tuesday. Students should also consult their course syllabi for further details concerning class attendance and monitor their student email and Canvas site for updated messages from instructor(s). University policy on class attendance can be found in the UNCW Academic Catalogues in the University Regulations section for the undergraduate catalogue and in the Academic Regulations and Procedures section for the graduate catalogue.

Any additional questions regarding courses should be directed to the course instructor(s) or the academic department chair/school director. (A list of academic departments/schools can be found on each college website.)

University Employees

UNCW will move to Condition 1 (Reduced Operations) of the Adverse Weather Policy at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 21. During this time, the university will remain open, but certain non-mandatory operations may be reduced due to more limited staffing.

Mandatory employees and employees temporarily assigned as mandatory due to this weather event must report to work or remain at work as directed. All other employees have the option to report late, leave early, or not report at all; however, the employee is responsible for informing his/her supervisory chain in a timely manner of all decisions.

Employees may also work remotely with supervisory approval. Employees must use leave for any work time missed in accordance with leave keeping policies. As mentioned earlier, classes and campus events are cancelled after 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Residential Students

On-campus residential students are encouraged to stay indoors as much as possible, venturing outdoors only when necessary. When you are heading outdoors, wear warm layers and use caution. Remember to be careful when walking up or down steps or stairwells as they may be slippery in winter weather conditions. Housing and Residence Life will salt high-traffic areas. Management at Plato’s Loft will coordinate weather preparation for HRL residents living at that property.

Other Events and Services

Remember that cold weather conditions may impact scheduled events, activities and services on campus and in the Wilmington area throughout the week. Before heading out, please check relevant websites and/or social media feeds for the latest updates.

UNCW Communication Updates

Updates will be posted to the UNCW homepage, UNCW Alert page, UNCW Mobile and social media feeds (Facebook, Instagram and X). These sources contain the latest information available to university officials. Monitor your campus email inboxes; messages with a reference to the weather in the subject line merit careful review.

In the event of university-level closings or cancellations, UNCW Alert text messages and the Emergency Information Hotline (1.888.657.5751) will be activated.
