Focus Forward Fellowship Empowers UNCW Student Veterans

UNCW students Leanne Churchill and Jasmine Davis recently completed the 2023 Focus Forward Fellowship, a nationwide program designed to support women student veterans.

The competitive fellowship, offered by the Military Family Research Institute at Purdue University, is awarded to women student veterans who are pursuing degrees at educational institutions across the United States. Churchill is a graduate student in the International Master of Business Administration program, while Davis is a business major at UNCW's Cameron School of Business.

“Both Leanne and Jasmine have been exceptional students and outstanding leaders at UNCW and in the community,” said Bill Kawczynski, director of UNCW’s Office of Military Affairs. “Our office is extremely proud of their accomplishments and how they continuously work to provide extra-curricular opportunities for all of our military-affiliated students.”

The program supports fellows in developing their skills, leadership abilities and sense of community, which can help them succeed academically and professionally. Davis and Churchill worked with faculty, coaches and corporate mentors to develop new career proficiencies and identify strategies and resources to increase connections and success on campus. They also gained confidence in problem solving and developed abilities to help achieve academic and professional goals. The program is divided into both residential and online components.
