Message from Chancellor Volety: Enjoy Break. Stay Safe.

Dear Students:

The fall semester at UNCW is off to a fantastic start. Temps are falling and I hope your grades are soaring. I’m certain most of you are excited for a short break from classes. Whether you are headed out or staying in town, please take some time to think about your personal health and safety and that of your fellow Seahawks.

I often say I’m a dad who happens to be a Chancellor. I wouldn’t be either if I didn’t share these reminders:

  • Secure your living space. Place bikes, scooters and other valuables inside while you are away. Reminder: bicycle registration is mandatory and available at the Hawk Wheels Bike Support Office. Secure your bike with a U-bolt lock. Cable locks are easily (and often) cut.
  • Park in well-lit areas and always lock your vehicle, on and off campus.
  • Complete ATM transactions during the day. Protect your PIN and keep a close watch on your financial accounts.
  • October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Our online security is critical in today’s world. UNCW Information Technology Services offers a myriad of technology related services to the university community. Review their site to see what services are available to you.
  • Remain aware of your surroundings at all times. Download the LiveSafe app if you haven’t yet. It arms you with the ability to report a crime if you see one happening. It also gives you access to essential safety information, emergency phone numbers and procedures all through your phone.

The UNCW Police Department is located on the east side of campus (5126 Lionfish Drive) and is open 24 hours a day. Officers patrol campus 365 days a year. Visit their website to familiarize yourself with the dept and resources they offer.

UPD can be reached by:

  • Dialing 911 from any UNCW extension, including courtesy phones
  • Calling 910.962.2222 for non-emergency situations
  • Through the LiveSafe app
  • Email: police@uncw.edu

It’s important to stay “Seahawk Strong” physically and mentally. Free flu shots are available; call 910.962.3280 to schedule an appointment.

Other campus safety and support resources that are available to you year-round:

Again, enjoy your fall break and thank you for watching out for yourself and each other this semester. Let’s soar together!

In Seahawk Spirit,

Aswani K. Volety
Chancellor
