Graduate Assistant – Work Study Preferred

Compensation and Term of Assistantship:
The Graduate Assistant will receive $13 per hour for a 10-month position (August 2025 through May 2026); approximately 20 hours per week and subject to demands and program needs; renewal of appointment based on a successful performance evaluation. It is preferred that applicants are eligible for work study.

Unit Summary:
The purpose of the Office of Student Affairs Assessment, Research, and Planning is to understand how the Division of Student Affairs at UNCW facilitates student learning and to provide ongoing assessment support for departments within student affairs (e.g., Student Health Center, Campus Recreation). To this end, the office is committed to assessing student learning and those institutional conditions, student experiences, and psychological processes that influence its development. Included within this commitment are activities designed to provide continued support for departmental formative assessments, including tracking engagement, conducting surveys of student satisfaction, benchmarking, and other projects necessary for annual reporting.

Competencies:

Required:

  • Completion of 1 quantitative or statistical graduate course
  • Knowledge of MS Office Suite (especially Excel)
  • Ability to organize information efficiently
  • Experience in survey creation, instrumentation, and distribution
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Preferred:

  • Experience in statistical software (SAS, SPSS, R)
  • Completion of a graduate assessment or program evaluation course
  • Experience working with large datasets
  • Eligible for work study

Typical Tasks:

Please note that GAs may not do all the tasks and may be assigned to other tasks as needed:

  1. Create and revise Qualtrics surveys
  2. Clean and pre-process data sets as needed
  3. As directed by supervisor, meet with student affairs units to discuss assessment
  4. Conduct qualitative research
  5. Assist with research design

Application Procedure:

The Graduate Assistant reports to the Director of Student Affairs Assessment, Research, and Planning (SAARP) and works closely with the SAARP Research Analyst and other Division of Student Affairs staff members on projects.

Graduate Assistant for Student Involvement (Position Unavailable '25-'26)

The Graduate Assistant for Student Involvement is a member of the Campus Life Student Involvement and Leadership team. This position primarily supports Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) and students looking for involvement opportunities by facilitating classroom presentations and assisting visitors to the Campus Activities and Involvement Center (CAIC). This position will also assist with the new student organization registration process by helping new organizations develop their constitutions, adhere to university policy, and understand best practices. Alongside the Assistant Director for Student Involvement, the Graduate Assistant provides oversight of CAIC by co-supervising the Involvement Specialist student staff team. This position will also collaborate with the Assistant Director in planning and executing Student Organization and Leadership Awards and Recognition (SOLAR Awards), Involvement Carnivals, Faith Fest, RSO Bootcamp, and CAIC Open Houses.

Graduate Assistant for Campus Activities & Programs (Position Unavailable '25-'26)

The Graduate Assistant for Campus Activities & Programs is a member of the Campus Life Student Involvement and Leadership team. This position supports campus-wide programs and traditions throughout the academic year with a $200,000 operating budget. The Graduate Assistant will co-supervise, alongside the Coordinator for Campus Activities and Programs, the student employment programming team with oversight of two of the programming functional areas (Boseman Art Gallery, University Union, Leadership Lectures, UNCWeekends). The position will support the Coordinator in facilitating student employee development, event coverage, administrative support, and the planning of large-scale events such as Dub Up and the Leadership Lecture Series.

Association for Campus Entertainment 'ACE' Graduate Assistant (Position Filled '25-'26)

The Graduate Assistant for the Association for Campus Entertainment (ACE) is a member of the Campus Life Student Involvement and Leadership team. The Association for Campus Entertainment (ACE) is the student programming board responsible for organizing activities, concerts, films, and spirit programming throughout the academic year with a $290,000 budget. The Graduate Assistant will co-advise, alongside the Coordinator for Campus Activities and Programs, two to three of the ACE functional areas (Activities, Concerts, Films, Spirit, Membership and Marketing). The position will support the coordinator in facilitating student leadership development, event coverage, administrative support, and the planning of large-scale events such Dub After Dark and Homecoming.

Leadership Development Graduate Assistant (Position Filled '25-'26) 

The Graduate Assistant for Leadership Development is a member of the Campus Life Student Involvement and Leadership team. This position supports leadership development experiences offered to the general student body, registered student organizations, and university department student groups. The Graduate Assistant manages leadership workshop requests and supports the planning, promotion, and execution of leadership development initiatives, including the Emotionally Intelligent Leadership Workshop Series, Seahawk Leadership Week, and off-campus leadership retreats. Alongside the Coordinator for Leadership Development, this position will also co-supervise the Leadership Educators, a team of undergraduate student employees who assist in the promotion, facilitation, and execution of the leadership development programs.

Graduate Student Involvement Graduate Assistant (Position Filled '25-'26)

The Graduate Assistant for Graduate Student Involvement is a member of the Campus Life Student Involvement and Leadership Team. This position primarily supports the development and implementation of programs and events that enhance the graduate student experience at UNCW. Alongside the Assistant Director for Graduate Student Involvement, The Graduate Assistant will support graduate student engagement initiatives, facilitate leadership and professional development opportunities for graduate students, and assist in planning and execution of graduate student programming, including the Graduate Student Picnic, Graduate Gratitude Week, Graduate Open Houses, and Graduate Appreciation Week. This position will collaborate with campus partners, be a resource to graduate student organizations, and contribute to communication and outreach efforts tailored to the graduate student population.

Marketing Graduate Assistant (Position Filled '25-'26)

The Graduate Assistant for Marketing is a member of the Campus Life Student Involvement and Leadership Team. This position primarily supports the design and promotion of events, services, and involvement opportunities in Campus Life, including some campus-wide marketing outlets like the Hawk eNews, campus bulletin boards, and Fisher bathroom bulletins. Alongside the Assistant Director for Campus Activities and Programs, the Graduate Assistant will co-supervise the Marketing Interns, a group of student employees who assist marketing efforts for several units in Campus Life, including Student Community Engagement, Student Involvement and Leadership, Fraternity and Sorority Life, Multicultural Student Services and Resources Centers, and Conferences, Events, and Reservations.

Hawks Harvest Food Pantry Graduate Assistant (Position Filled '25-'26) 

The Graduate Assistant for Hawk’s Harvest Food Pantry supports the daily operation of both locations of UNCW’s campus food pantry, which includes staffing shopping hours, tracking and maintaining inventory, assisting with the acquisition of donations, the development of supplemental information and resources, and promoting the resource to campus. The Hawk’s Harvest Graduate Assistant will also occasionally support the broader programming of the Student Community Engagement unit, which includes recurring service projects in the community, annual events, and educational sessions. The ideal candidate will have experience working with non-profit organizations in a hands-on capacity (volunteer, intern, etc.), and a driver’s license is required.

COMPENSATION: This role requires a commitment of 20 hours per week, and is compensated an hourly wage that equates to approximately $13,000 to over the course of the academic year (early August through mid-May).

Conduct Interventions - Work under the Direct Services Coordinator in the Health Promotion office to deliver substance use early intervention services to UNCW students referred through the university conduct system.

The ARC role is ideal for graduate students in higher education, public and business administration, marketing, psychology, sociology, creative writing, and several other related fields. In the past, we’ve welcomed graduate students from the social work, film studies, and marine sciences programs as well!  This position offers direct and transferable skills and offers flexibility with your class schedule.

The time commitment is approximately 20 hours per week, and the compensation package includes:

Graduate Assistant (Positions filled for '25-'26 academic year)

Summary

The Graduate Assistant for University Learning Center, with guidance from ULC professional staff, provides peer educator training and student leadership development, assists with outreach, and develops program coordination skills. Evenings and weekends required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with training Peer Educators, including observations/assessments and leading training workshops based on established criteria.
  • Assist with ULC outreach efforts, including participation in various promotional events and delivery of ULC presentations to classes and student groups.
  • Assist with the coordination and oversight of a ULC service, including use of campus platforms (TracCloud, Starfish) to manage student usage.
  • Assist with collecting assessment data.
  • Provide leadership and guidance for Peer Educators.

Qualifications

Required:
  • Must be a full-time UNCW graduate student.
  • Demonstrated leadership and organizational skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in teams.
  • Desire to work in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to present in front of and engage with diverse audiences.
Preferred:
  • Interest or previous experience in teaching and/or tutoring.
  • Experience in program and event planning and implementation.

University Testing Services Graduate Assistants (three positions available for fall 2025 semester)

University Testing Services is responsible for proctoring high stakes examinations to students of UNCW and the public. Commonly administered tests include the PRAXIS and GRE.

There are three graduate assistantships available for fall 2025. Each graduate assistant will complete online training to become certified to proctor many different types of exams. Each GA will serve as a proctor in the center; this includes assisting testers as they navigate the check in process, following standardized procedures for proctoring and ensuring test security, and assisting the Testing Services Coordinator as needed.
